New to TT
Just came across this great site. Seems like you guys have a lot of fun. I have grown up hunting, fishing, and camping, but am just now getting serious about hiking. My three passions in life are my family (wife and two bassett hounds), ecology, and sports medicine. I am sure I will have tons of questions for you experienced hikers, so I hope your advice is free! Hope to get to know you guys

Why not get started with the advice seeking
Anyone out there have a spouse whose idea of spending time in the outdoors is shopping at an outdoor mall? If so is there any hope, or should I file for divorce now? JK

This board is acting weird today.

I posted to bitpusher's birthday thread and the last half of the post came thru as a link to a smilie page and the first half didn't even make it to the post.

Oh RebelYell, welcome if you are real by any chance.

Welcome dude! The best thing to do is just try and get her to give you your space. If she doesn't like hiking she doesn't like hiking.

BTW- Never click on links given by Violin. Trust me.

I think I can answer this one
There is NO HOPE, yet not grounds for divorce!

grin, bear it, and buy new gear!!!

The real question is, will she wash your smelly trail clothes when you get home?

One possible solution is go hiking with groups of friends, including single women. This can be a big motivator for her to come along.

If this doesn't work, at least you will have built a good co-ed social life to fall back on when you divorce.

Your first point does not work.

However, your second point does have potential!

Rebel, here are my techniques and theories for continued spouse involvement:

1. carry the great majority of the weight
2. have good food
3. surprise her with lunch and after dinner treats
4. carry wine
5. carry a shower bag, especially on longer trips, and use it together before bed.
6. know where you are going so you don't get lost (although I did get off trail once and we ended up camping on a rocky ridge)
7. for a treat, camp at the trailhead, and go into town for a nice breakfast before the hike (I have only done that once, but it was appreciated)
8. go to nice places, with good views, nice lake, good camping
9. get her clothes and gear she likes, such as nylon pants and long sleeve shirt, nylon short sleeve shirt, good boots, socks, and sleeping bag.
10. do all the work of packing and food selection, purchase and packing
11. get your kids interested in backpacking, so the whole family goes, with other families with kids.
12. if no kids, go with other couples
13. don't forget little luxuries and creature comfort aids, like mosquito repellent, wet wipes, salt and pepper, butter.

Good luck!

Southern Gypsie and Rebel Yell are just the first wave.

By the end of 2004, we plan on making this board a symbol of southern hiking.
