anyone else having problems with TT loading. It seems something is slowing it down. Not sure if it is an ad or what

For the last week I have on IE.

It's probably ads because when I use Firefox I don't have ads loading {snicker}, so I believe you're right. The ads are loading slowly.

Yah, I noticed it yesterday. Some of the ads seem to take forever to load, and it's causing IE to stutter.

Going from Firefox to IE is like going from a Blackberry back to soup cans on a string.

I also noticed that I am getting a note that says Done but with errors on the page. Must be the ads not loading correctly

Yeah, me too but only with IE. I think you nailed it Ewker.

FrankeNigal - I have seen that but didn't try it. In the past anytime I've tried those types of techniques they weren't very effective so I steer clear of them. If you're saying it worked well for you maybe I'll give it a shot.

Sonofagun.....I thought it was my crappy dial up connection but I've been seeing the same slow, herky-jerky page loading too.

C'mon Matt, clean it up!!!

I was able to see a difference. I normally have at least three tabs running at the same time. It does make it the tiniest bit unstable but it's still better than IE.

If the ads are coming from someone else's server, there's not much he can do other than not run the ads. If he doesn't run the ads, he doesn't get paid. If he doesn't get paid, then no TT.

I can take the slow loading for a while more.
bloodpusher

bit, doesn't he only get paid when people click on the ads?
Ewker

Some of the ads completely prevent TT from loading on my (old) machine. Memo to advertisers:

I won't buy your product if your ad messes up the web page I'm trying to read!!
BowlderMan

I dunno about that. Click-through counts are pretty much dead from what I've heard, because they were being abused.

I never click on any ads. Never. If I do see a product I like on a clickable ad, I do a google search and go straight to the website. Mostly I do this because I simply don't trust clickable ads.

Thanks Nigal,
It seems faster for my machine.
I set the network.http.pipelining.maxrequest up to 10 from the default setting of 4. Do you know what I can push that to without it becoming a problem?

I have experienced similar problems.
Please be careful however as whatever the problem is, an adware worm loaded itself onto my shop computer. I started getting bombarded with ads for u-name-it whether I was logged into IE or not. It had actually loaded itself into my Windows program files.
I found a thing called Hijackthis to clean the worm out, listed as eso.exe or izuom.exe, and, as of this writing, the ads have stopped.
However, as I logged into the backpacker website today, an ad tried to load. I think the Spyware caught it. I hope.
Of course, I know diddly about computers and I could be full of bovine scat.....

The problems with TT are unrelated to adware. I doubt if Matt would abuse our trust by accepting ads that would load adware or spyware on our computers.

Most of that stuff comes from "free" software that people download to their computers. If it's a shop computer, and someone else has access to it, then there's no telling what's on there. Ad-aware and Spybot are two good freeware programs to find and remove most adware and spyware. They should be run regularly on any computer that is easily accessible.

I am the only person who has access to this computer.
I have both programs, Adware and Spybot, and neither would remove the stuff. The adware was imbedded in something like, C:\Windows\eso.exe., C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KERNEL32.DLL, or C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KERNEL32.DLL, among a couple of other possibilities.
I do not have the expertise to actually track the original source or know if I can.
I don't even know that it started from going here but, coincidentally, I experienced similar problems at home after logging into backpacker.
I am sure nothing intentional was applied to this website and I don't know enough about computers to know if someone, a hacker of some sort (?), may have maliciously attacked this site.
I do know that I am, was, receiving popups after logging into this site.
I don't mean to imply anything but I also feel a heads up is not a bad thing. Just in case.

That's not a 'TT site' problem.
That's a banner not loading problem.

Matt.....whoa! What has been going on here??? I opened several threads today and they were balooned up to monstrous size with a big ad right in the middle. I closed the thread, opened it again and it was fine. Some kind of wacky stuff happening here.

It's a hostile takeover attempt by Backpacker.com. Just sit tight and ride it out. We should survive it okay, but nothing is really secure in the world of backpacking internet forums.

Hey, a couple of times when I've loaded that thread, it stops at whatever you did to make the "i" and screws up the page. Then, when I reload, everything is fine.
