Been Wanting To Make One Of These For A While Now
Well I did it...I made someone a Christmas present....something I wanted to make for a loooong while now.

I took a stone I collected, a mudstone with preserved burrow holes from when it was sediment, and mounted it in a frame. I collect rocks with holes in them and although they are not rare, they are uncommon to say the least.

AND...I went to Radio Shack and got a switch, batteries and LEDS which I drilled holes in the frame and inner-frame and installed them to give lighting.

(The pics are links, so if you can't see a pic, click on it and you should be directed to pic.)

Wha'da'ya think, guys and dolls???

Very cool, Buddur. Reminds me of a stop at the Iowa Historical Society building in Des Moines a few years back. They had a burrow hole on display. You know what I mean. Somehow, materials made a mold of the burrow hole and it filled in. Hey! I guess a cross section of that is exactly what you have here, right? cool

I Have Tons Of Holy Rocks
Yes lizs, that's essentially a cross-section of vertical borrows. One of my favorite pieces is one that still has the borrow tube within the hole, yet the tube/plug is loose and moves but will not come out of the hole.

And Snownymph, click on the red x's to see the pick, cause I linked them directly to my webshots album.

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback. (I showed this to some who didn't seem so enthused.)

That is seriously kick a$$! The LED lights is an awesome touch. Kinda like the Dude's rug in "The Big Lebowski", it really tied the room together.

Add me to your list of buyers please.

There's a museum a few miles from here that has a display of all kinds of unusual stones in display cases with colored lights.

I'd have to say you have quite an eye for artistic things, there Buddur! That is one beautiful piece you have there! Oh... and if you DO get into making and selling those things, be sure to post about it here, ...

... I'd like to be put on that waiting list too, for one of them!

Where did you find such interesting rock formations?

I want one too, where do I sign up? Seriously, that does look like a museum piece. If somebody saw that and was 'less than enthused' then maybe there's something wrong with their eyesight.

Thanks!
I'd like to make a bunch but I don't think the lighting will be included. All in all, including sales tax, there's almost $25 in total for the hardware...the LEDs alone were $5 each. Maybe I should leave the lighting out?
Naaaaaaaaa!

I'm giving it away tonight to some friends of mine in OH. Mary does metalwork and has many artistic friends, so I'm sure her and her husband will dig it.

That is extremely creative, Buddur. I'd pay for one too so if you have a list started, put me on it. As for the others you showed it to who did not appreciate it, perhaps they aren't the creative outdoorsy types? All of us here pretty much love it!

Some Pics Of My Current Project...
Did half the job today for the fingerboard inlay for the banjo I'm making. Got the inlay pieces cut and glued to the fingerboard, and now I need to scribe around them, pluck the pieces off, route the scribed areas and glue the pieces into the basins...
btw - if you can't see the pics, I made links so all you have to do is click on the "X"...

And in case noone saw the previous pics of the resonator that will be on the banjo...

I Put ALOT Of Thought And Planning Into This Inlay
Geez, I could've completely finished the fretboard tonight if I didn't take the time to watch the Steelers lose.

Oh yeah, what you see above is each piece glued to the fretboard and still having the paper overtop the shell material...it ain't all white. For each fret, the middle piece is white Mother of Pearl, and the rest of the surrounding pieces are colorful Abalone. I even took the time to position each paper shape on the abalone to take advantage of the colors and patterns. When the pieces are finally inlayed and sanded flush these abalone patterns should be bilaterally symmetrical on each fret.

Wow, Your handiwork is great!

One thing-- I hope you are wearing a proper dust mask when sawing through the mother-of-pearl.. the dust can be quite toxic... :-)

Would love to see the finished product... You've obviously put a lot of love and care into it! :-)

Got The Fingerboard Done...
Here's a pic of the finished fretboard...
(Click on "X" to be linked to the pic)
The center piece of each fret design is Mother of Pearl and the rest is Abalone. The name on the 22nd fret is of Aluminum from a famous ornate metal smith shop in my hometown.
