Chili and I went and got the kids a puppy today for Christmas! Shelby is half black and tan and half walker, both of her parents are registered. She is black and has a little white on the paws and chest. Shelby is 6 wks old. She has only went to the bathroom 4 times now. She had her 1st bath tonight! Now I am tired from watching her sleep most of the day.

give it time, your carpets will be ruined, you'll be frazzeled, but the kids will love you forever.

You'll have a blast.

Enjoy!

I hijacked the computer
Hey, this is going to turn out to be a first rate hound dog.

As soon as she is big enough to stay out at night, I am going coon hunting with her.

That is if cottonsocks doesn't have her too spoiled by then.

I'm confused. What kind of dog is this? I thought black and tan were colors for dogs...not breeds.

Is this a dog that's gonna have that awful howl when penned outside? (especially nice in a neighborhood full of coon hounds!!! LOL)

Have fun with your puppy!! (how are you keeping it hidden till Christmas, pray tell?? LOL)

Black and Tan is a breed of dog?

WTF? I got this dog because I thought they was a reference to Guiness and Bass Ale.

The next thing I know, you will be telling me that the Walker isn't a reference to my friends Red and Black.

;-)

lizs, our closest neighbor is a couple hundred yards away. The next closest is over a quarter mile, the next closest is about a half mile away. This puppy has about a thousand acres to roam across near our house. We definately don't plan on keeping her penned up.

No kidding about the teeth. She only gnawed on me once before we had a "come to Jesus" meeting.

So far she has been pretty content with her chew toys. However, she did find one of my socks and now that seems to be her favorite. It's a good thing it wasn't smart wool.

I couldn't ask for much more, so far she sleeps almost all night (we get up once), and after only two days in the house (where she is only temporarily residing), she will let you know when she is ready to go outside. Only a couple of "accidents" (actually both on the first day_ and that was when I didn't get her out when she was telling me to go.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this in an earlier post, but get a crate for the pup. A lot of people will probably say it is cruel, but it is actually for the safety of the dog. We used a crate with our last three dogs, after the first one started chewing on almost everything when no one was home. The final straw was when he chewed up a bottle of flea powder. When we would leave for work we just tell them that it is “biscuits in bed, time” and they would go running into the crate. By the time the dog is about one year old, it will probably out grow the chewing stage for the most part, and the crate may no longer be necessary.

lumberzac, we have one and cottonsocks was going to put him in there this morning.

I intervened and decided to put him outside in the pen. However, the little houdini beat me back inside. I wound up leaving him in the garage.

its their ROOm...go to your room, I got a scooby snack for you. Khatru loves his room...its all his, although I crawled in with him once...he didn't like that very much, but tough.

Good luck....and YES, do get the room...it will save you LOTS of aggravation and heartache. I made that mistake with Khatru...he gnawed 2 peices of furniture and I was keeping him in a refrigerator box as a puppy, he ate his way out...and I had a room divider fence...I caught him climbing up it one time to get into the living room...I'll have to post that picture for you to see....when I jumped up and snapped his photo...he was so surprised he let go of the gate and fell backwards...I was laughing so dang hard, it was halarious...

have fun and good luck. hope he don't pee on YOU!

Yep, TB, that's about right.

WK, my 9 y/o daughter has constantly asked for a puppy. She said if it was girl, she wanted to name it Shelby. I had mixed emotions about it, but it has grown on me.

We crate trained "Shelby" at the beginning, but now she has the run of the house.

100 pound Shepard/Lab mix. Got to be the goofiest animal alive. 1 week ago, she pounced on a mouse outside and brought in what remained of it.

Cotton Socks and Chili please learn from the experence of some posters here with yuour new dog. I see where your going to let your new dog roam free -if you do it might get hit by a car- if yuour new dog gets hit by a car please odon't come here asking what to do -please take the dog to the vetrinarian IMMEDIATELY!! I think you should also be careful not to let your new dog eat too mcuch and get too fat because when you back up your car yuour new dog might not be able to get ourt of the way because its too fat and you will run over it and kill it. Thanks for being careful!

WTF!

Wounded Knee

12/22/03

Thanks bales, I will take that under advisement.

Now, lets see. There are 24 hours in a day/ 60 minutes to the hour/ 60 seconds to the minute.

That's what, oh somewhere in the neighborhood of 86,400 seconds in a day.

Now, a car traveling at 50 miles an hour covers what, about 73 feet a second?

Now, between our house and the main road (over 750 away) is what is known in Crittendon County as Ditch #9 (you see, this is all flat cotton and rice ground and it has to have ditches [like canals in Florida]). Our driveway (gravel) is about 15 feet wide.

Now lets assume that the pup goes out the drive way.

A car (at 50) could only be expected to be there for what? About 1/4 second.

So, with 86,400 seconds in a day, there are about 345,000 "Windows of opportunity for the dog to be hit".

About 20 cars a day pass our house.

I would calculate the chance of anything happening at 1 in 17,250 before we began to explore the outside factors such as the dog having enough sense (unlike most trolls) to stay out of the #&%!$ing road.

Yeah, I agree WK, dogs are much smarter than most trolls.

Does anybody other than me see the Irony of PETA wanting dogs penned up (as opposed to being able to roam over open farm ground)?

Chili please check with Opie about what happened to his dog wehen it wsas out roaming around free. He probably calculated some similar odds and look what happned. He probably thought his dog was smart enough to stay out tof the road but it didn;'t work ourt that way.
