Man, everyone loses weight on that "get sick" diet! I'm half wishing that happens to me....but it sure would be miserable to be sick enough to lose wieght!

Well, mono worked out real good for my wife before our wedding. She lost down to about 105, I think...fit into a size 4 dress...

so I am on this stricked diet and then I get a package from Germany. Nothing but cookies and candy, and my very favorite mon cherie (dark chocolate filled with a cherry and liquor...yummy)

that really sucks. I have to give it all away. I guess I'll have a germany coffee party.

Gemini, dont give away everything. Save your fav (the cherries is sounds like) and freeze em. Waaay in the back of the freezer. Once a week or so have one as a treat. You will not get fat from that.

I started working again, so I'm really focusing now on figuring out how to keep exercising and being healthy with limited time. First thing I've done is pretty much scrap my running in the morning, 'cause, all told, it takes up 'bout 2 hours Instead, I'm doing more push-ups and crunces everyday, 'bout 80 of each. Takes less time, is pretty effective at getting my heartrate up, and builds muscle faster. I figure that what I lose in overall excersize time, I'll try to make up in consistency. I still make time to walk everyday, so it isnt so bad.

Hey birch, just curious, how can a scale measure body fat? I'd love to find out my body fat, but I'm too lazy to go through all those measurements.

it shoots electrical impulses through your feet.

Chips76, the scale I have has a built in body fat tester. You enter your gender, height and then weigh your self. Your bare feet are on two pads that send sorta electro-magentic wave thingy through your body which senses the density,it then gives you a rough percentage. Not entirely accurate but it gives you a relative idea. Sorta like a scale thats off by 5 lbs. It may weigh you 5 lbs heavy everytime, but it'll still tell you if the numbers are up or down.

We spent $55 on ours at Meijers. I think it was on sale but I've seen them regularly around $65 or so.

Well I worked out yesterday and today with my pack on and it felt great. The last time I hiked with my pack it felt so uncomfortable. So now I am really excited. It has about thirty pounds in it which isn't as heavy as my winter stuff but I will work up.

I think my scale was about $80. I don't know which on of those models I have, as I seem to have hidden it on myself. For good reason I'm sure.

I just got my nutrition action newsletter and it spends 8 pages discussing the top three diets - Atkin's, Dr Phil, and South Beach. The newsletter says South Beach is a healthy diet.
It also includes a matrix that compares 10 diet books.

Heard an interview with the author of the south beach diet. Very interesting. At first he was dismissive of "carbs" but as he spoke later he clarified and spoke of processed vs whole grains long grain rice etc...

Two things stuck out during the interview.
1. He was willing to admit shortcomings of his diet and posted updates to it in his website. He referred to it as an "evolution".
2. No group (except for him) has done any studies about the long term effect (good or bad) of his diet. The one he did was quite short (a few months If I recall) and was a small group.

As far as fad diets go this seems to be pretty decent.

RE: South Beach. My wife controls the food in the house, I needed to eat different to lose weight, South Beach did not seem unreasonable, even not know his scientific argument. Seems the first two weeks are focused very low carb, especially highly process flour products, suger, fruits etc. Lots of veggies, very liberal protein, liberal fat, but focusing on low fat or small amounts of olive oil or unprocessed butter (i.e. no faky, faky stuff). Most of the fat in the diet comes from the food, not added oil. Just enough oil for cooking and dressings. I think the weight loss comes from caloric restriction (haven't calculated it), but the rest of the food is satisfying enough that it is easy to stick with. I only violate the cafeine and the alcohol, but switched to wine or tequila instead of beer. ;)

I lost 5 pounds in a week, still losing it appears. Part of that is probably the effect of my increased exersize catching up.

The strick part of the diet lasts two weeks. I predict 205 at the end of that. Then it adds some complex carbs in the form of unprocessed or minimally processed grains etc. I think some fruit comes in there too. This is not a white bread diet.

Since I'm still stuck at the same weight after 4 weeks, I may try South Beach or something else. I am noticing some muscle definition, but my weight is the same (I know, its muscle) and none of my clothes fit better. None of them. Maybe I need to re-look at my portions. I'm so frustrated!

Just remember muscles weigh more than fat. So if you work out you may actually gain some weight, but be more fit.

Wow! Wingding! Amazing! I am down 7 lbs and broke the diet at Superbowl- only with a glass of wine, though, so I hope it won't matter that much. Had a glass last weekend in Mecca Hills, too. Seems to be okay if it is just every now and then.

I have finally broken through the 200 lbs barrier I was stuck at. Ok it isn't much past but it is a start. Now if I can keep it going to my goal.

I did up my running to 3 miles (about an 11:00 mintue mile)this Sat and Sun. I actually felt like I could have gone farther but I stopped there. I didn't want to over do it and fall out..lol

okay, prolly a stupid question but here it goes:

we all know that we have to really limit our sodium intake. Most of the sodium is coming from salt, I know that too. BUT where the heck is all the other sodium coming from?? It would so easy to keep the varity of foods if I could eat those frozen entrees, but their sodium % is just crazy. Even canned vegetable have huge amounts of sodium.
Gemini

salt is added to make those overprocessed, steam cooked, frozen, to be nuked again, bland dishes taste good.

Some sodium is in the preservatives added to these foods, Gem...

I normally eat frozen or fresh veggies, but I like the turnip greens in the can. hardly no calories, but huge amount of sodium, so it's out of the question :(

I love the watch watchers angelhair and shrimp, but again, way too much sodium in those frozen dinners.
Gemini

Yeah, I can't eat them either, Gem. The sodium content can't be helpful to my blood pressure...

I like to get these big bags of frozen stir-fry veggies at Costco and steam them, then serve them over a bed of rice. A little (or a lot) of soy sauce, and they're delicious. I usually have baked fish with that, and a glass of cheap wine. Hard to beat!
bitpusher

yeah, with your blood pressure that would really suck. would be so much easier though if this stuff wouldn't have as much sodium. pop it in the microwave, and done!

I think the Healty Choice entrees aren't as bad, Gem...have you looked at those? The Weight Watchers meals are very high in sodium.

Bit, those stir fry veggies are really good. And they are not too high in carbs either.

Not until you add the rice, anyway, lol...

Wish I could get my family to eat the veggies, but unfortunately not yet. My daughter did try the fish though, she liked the orange roughy, but didn't like the flounder very much.

Ok everyone is doing great. I need to add some more workouts, 1 or 2 a week isn't cutting it.

The weight loss is going good. Jan 1rst I was 233lbs I am now at 216 after a few bad cheating episodes.
I am going to try to wrok out everyday this week. 30minutes on the bike and 30 minutes on the X-trainer.
