I hope this doesn't mess up the fit of my pack.” 11:02:21 AM 2/03/04 “i had my bf taken last night. 9.5%!! i think it might be off though. i still don't have the bottom part of my 6 pack unless i flex really hard. i thought at under 10 they should be showing all the time. my guess is that im really around 12%. just a little more work, and watch out ladies, cause here i come. actually, the irony of it is i was all ready to go out and make the women happy and now i've got a girlfriend. what a cruel life.” 11:37:08 AM 2/03/04 “I'm holding pretty steady at 155, my basic target. If I go a little under that, it'll be OK. They're doing some free body fat testing at the gym this week, so I may check into that. When I was 170 a little over a year ago, they tested me at 25%. Keep up the good work everyone!!!” 11:43:36 AM 2/03/04 “all right, all of ya! i think i'm down another 1/2 pound, a total of 2.5 in the last 5 weeks. you guys drive me crazy with all this talk of 6 lbs in a week stuff! cripes!why doesn't it work that way for me???” 12:17:26 PM 2/03/04 “Yeah Smiley, it is distracting isn't it! I'm avoiding the scale now, too depressing. But I am still working out. Plus chasing all over campus adds to the workout. We have a hill called Cardiac Hill, that I have to climb at least twice a day. I'm not quite running up the hill, but I am faster than I used to be. The breathing is still a problem. Anyone know a good way to increase the oxygen intake so that I'm not breathin so heavily during an uphill. I have the same problem with backpacking, no matter how much I hike, the uphills never seem to fail to cause that oxygen deficit.” 12:31:14 PM 2/03/04 Losing Weight “I am not on either Atkins or South Beach. However,I did find out in Cotober that I am mildly gluten intolerant. I will not go into the symptoms other than to say that it causes "digestive distress", sudden and almost uncontrollable. Gluten is found in wheat, oats, rye and barley. So I have been going without bread, pasta, cakes, pies, crackers cookies, anything thickened with wheat flour(gravy etc), twizzlers (their is wheat in those licorice ropes, any alcohol made from those grains, etc. Weight has dropped from 215 to 195 w/o any other effort. I want to get down to 165 before I start substituting rice or potato flour or products made from those. I have been eating more egss, bacon, veggies, fruits, nuts (trail mix is a great snack in moderation). Try it, you may not need to be as strict about avoiding gluten as I am, but man it makes the weight drop off.” 12:33:47 PM 2/03/04 “I have exactly the same problem, Lyndy. Uphills always get me out of breath. My doc even sent me out for some heart test to make sure that it was moving enough blood, and that apparently wasn't the problem.” 12:34:33 PM 2/03/04 “Lyndy, glad to know I'm not alone! My mom suggested I go see my dr. and have my thyroid checked. If nothing changes in the next two weeks, I think I will make an appt.” 12:44:28 PM 2/03/04 “Good luck Smiley! I just lost 105 pounds on Sunday. Good riddence!” 12:45:43 PM 2/03/04 “I just lost 105 pounds on Sunday. Good riddence!" Buddha Bear 12:45:43 PM 02/03/04 I have a feeling this should be on the dating sucks thread” 12:48:31 PM 2/03/04 “Either that or he bet on the Super Bowl with Ynami and paid him in British currency...” 12:49:36 PM 2/03/04 Ewker “No, it should be here. It's a new diet called "The Confused Girl Diet". She lost 230 lbs., now she's on a meatless diet.” 12:51:25 PM 2/03/04 “LMAO!!” 1:07:01 PM 2/03/04 “Buddha Bear, I thought all was going well? report to the dating sucks thread and tell us all about it. LyndyS, I'm the same way - I always gotta stop and breathe. I thought it was cause I have too much belly fat. It's way worse if I've had bronchitis in the winter. I found my body fat scales, hahaha! :(” 1:15:03 PM 2/03/04 “LyndyS, I'm the same way - I always gotta stop and breathe. I thought it was cause I have too much belly fat. It's way worse if I've had bronchitis in the winter. I found my body fat scales, hahaha! :(" twigeater 01:15:03 PM 02/03/04 ignore this us Oh give me a break, you sprint up near vertical trails like a mountain goat! (Not that I am calling you a goat or anything). And what belly fat? The funniest thing was how you rarely even broke a sweat, while I would be wringing out my hair. But I think that the big difference is that you have been fit and active for most of your life and I have been a desk jockey for many years. So I need to change my lifestyle to be more active. And yes I think that having pneumonia and bronchitis damages the lungs in some way that probably is a good part of the problem. I had the oxygen deficit problem in high school when I was on the track team, because of so many bronchitis events. I only realized a few years ago that my bronchitis is brought on by cold air asthma. Since getting treatment for that, I haven't had winter bronchitis.” 1:24:47 PM 2/03/04 “LOL, well maybe I only have to breathe when hiking with Bruce Almighty!! could be trying to keep up with his 34.7 mph pace. :)” 1:38:08 PM 2/03/04 smiley girl “what does your workout consist of? how about your diet? do you know how many calories you need in a day to maintain your current weight?(i could help you with that if you don't know) that is a very important one. you can't lose weight unless you burn more calories than you eat. it sounds like you're doing everything right. some people are hard losers. stay persistent and you'll see results. take pictures every week and im sure you'll see results. you're a pretty tiny girl anyway, aren't you? you might not lose too many clothes sizes.” 5:58:19 PM 2/03/04 “smiley, keep in mind that the more weight you have to lose, the faster the pounds shed (at first). A fella at 200lbs has much more to lose then you. Keep focusing on eating healthy, working out regulary and no matter what you WILL be healthier. Skinny doesnt always equal healthy. Ducttape, good deal on the BF test!!! Thats wayyyy low. My lowest was 7% I was 155lbs and a wiry thing at that. Its hard to evn remember those days.” 8:30:59 PM 2/03/04 “thanks dude. i want abs. i won't give up until i have them.” 10:41:04 PM 2/03/04 Thanks guys, “But I just want my pants to fit again!! I've been doing The Firm video workouts 3-4x a week. They consist of aerobic weight training. I am seeing a little muscle definintion, but its the belly fat that really pi$$es me off. I know its hardest to get rid of, but dang, I thought things would start to fit a little better! Life is starting to get busier. I'm full into my master's class, still working 40+ hours a week, and about to start a review class for the P.E. test. I barely have time to get done what I have going in life now, adding some more studying for the P.E. is going to be tough. Unfortunaly, there aren't too many healthy "quick" meals. I can't find enough time to cook, work out, and study all in one night.” 7:11:45 AM 2/04/04 “My weight loss has slowed down so I looked in the South Beach book and I don't think I an eating enough. I have really cut down on the food intake so I am going to add some snacks back in. It doesn't make sense to me but I will give it a try. 18 weeks to reach my goal weight! 21lbs to go!” 9:28:20 AM 2/04/04 “I'm back to my pre Super Bowl weight of 211. ;-)” 9:39:07 AM 2/04/04 “i started the south beach deit 2 1/2 weeks ago and have lost 11 1/2 lbs. my cravings for sweets and bread have gone away and i am feeling alot better. i have more energy and am upping my walking. did almost 6 miles the other day. maybe i wll lose a couple of lbs on the ocala trip this week-end.” 10:15:15 AM 2/04/04 “I also am always out of breath on the uphill - It never get's easier. I've had pneumonia twice in my life - would that affect my aerobic capacity?” 10:45:31 AM 2/04/04 “smiley girl, maybe you need to step it up. i don't know about the video you're doing, but it seems that most of those are for people who will get results from doing anything. i'd say you're probably in pretty good shape already, being a michigan mountaineer and everything. 3 things you must take care of are training, nutrition, and sleep. none of these are more important than the other. keep tweaking til you get a good balance. your body will adjust to new things very quickly. keep changing what you're doing. shock that body. homeostasis is not our friend in this game. a theory i have is this: it's kind of out there, but here goes. in your body there are two main types of muscle, slow twitch(red fiber), and fast twitch(white fiber). most likely you're only hitting the red fibers really hard, and not digging very deep into the white fibers. the white muscle is the powerful stuff. it's very strong but lacks endurance, while the opposite is true of red fiber. try adding 1 or 2 heavy lifting days into your routine. im not talking a huge long workout, just use a weight you can only move 6 or 7 times. obviously i don't know for sure, not knowing your actual diet and daily life, but it sounds to me like a couple "balls to the wall" all out exercise sessions will give your body just the shock it needs. if you try, let me know how it goes. BUT, the opposite could also be true. there are actually a few subcategories of white fiber. type IIa, IIb, and this new one we're just finding out about, type IIc. the ones i'm concerned with here are the type IIb. this is muscle you get from literally doing nothing. it's superstrong for a short period of time. this is the muscle that allows an out of shape mother to lift the car that's on top of her baby. in an out of shape person, this muscle can account for as much as 20% of all the muscle in your body. that's a lot. let's say you tore this muscle all up when you first started working out. the thing is, now that you're active, it doesn't need to replace itself. so you could actually have a temporary loss in lean tissue, which will lower your bmr, making it harder to lose fat. it could be either or none of these, but either way, if you keep working out you'll bust out of the hole, and when you do it'll be a great motivator to keep it going. i hope some of that made a little bit of sense.” 11:55:46 AM 2/05/04 “Has anyone mentioned giving blood? I went in last Monday to give but they got frustrated with my low pressure and quit before it was done--I was taking up a chair and little was coming out!! Anyway, it might be a way to lose a little and you have to expend calories to make new cells.” 12:15:26 PM 2/05/04 “Bloodletting! Yeah!” 12:40:20 PM 2/05/04 “Maybe burying her up to her neck a bog overnight, with a toad sitting on her head would help too?” 12:53:51 PM 2/05/04 “Cruised for that one” 4:45:42 PM 2/05/04 “ductape, it I move to ohio will be become my personal trainer?? LOL I need someone that works out with me, pushed me to my limits. It's hard to do this by yourself. If I can't push the weight just one last time half way...I have no one that will help me. Really sucks big time. come on!! I know someone wants to move to columbia??” 5:16:44 PM 2/05/04 “Hey, we haven't forgotten about this losing weight thing, have we? What are everybody's stats? I am hovering between 6-8 lbs lost, still hitting the gym regularly(4-6 times a week)and having been doing that HIIT thing which sounded really easy, because you start with 4 minutes, but it is really kick a$$. I am up to 7 minutes now. Do regular cardio for 30 mins and then the weights and machines for the rest of the time. I am at a standstill w/ the weight loss, but I have GOT to be building muscle, so I am not too worried!” 9:19:38 AM 2/08/04 “I am at 206 as of today. Started at 220 about New Years. Had an 8oz bison New York cut and huge salad for dinner. Still eating South Beach Diet, that's what I am being fed. 12lbs in two weeks-1 day. I could be at 204,205 tomorrow. Shooting for 193#, 15% BF. I start Phase 2 tomorrow which will slow the weight loss some, but be much more variety and more carbs. Got in a great 2.5 hours XC ski yesterday afternoon, should get another in this afternoon. My exersize during the week was minimal last week. Too much work, too many evening meetings.” 9:25:23 AM 2/08/04 “PS I've broken the diet by having a glass or wine or two now an then. Spooky. The google links on the right side of this thread are weight loss programs.” 9:47:13 AM 2/08/04 “Pathman- I dislike red meat. Is there other stuff on the South Beach Diet? I think I saw a chicken recipe on the little e mails they send me. Is it enough variety?” 10:25:24 AM 2/08/04 “South Beach allows beans, and both SB and Atkins encourage chicken, fish, pork, etc. It doesn't have to be beef, by any means. Variety helps most people stick to the diet. I like Atkins because of the cheese, but beans would be a nice change too.” 10:40:53 AM 2/08/04 “I get low fat or no fat cheese, chicken, beef fish etc. Beans too, but haven't had too many yet. The variety is not bad, especially if you have time for meal planning. Phase 2 will be much better.” 10:59:31 AM 2/08/04 “Congrats Trailtrekker and Pathman! I earned an extra 34 points yesterday by going snowshoeing/hiking - I'm only allowed 20 points a day, but I can trade exercise points for food points. I ate whatever I wanted yesterday because you can't carry the points over. I'm down 9 or 10 pounds - I weigh in tomorrow.” 1:56:55 PM 2/08/04 “i've been looking at this bmr counter lately. it's very cool stuff. you breathe into it for a while, and it tells you how many calories you burn in 24 hours while at rest. then you factor in your activity levels and bam, you know exactly how many calories you need to maintain, lose, or gain weight. it's pretty pricey but i'd love to figure out a way to get one. it would be great for clients,(and myself.) plus, it will help me make more money, because you charge for the test. i was playing with one in the store the other day with the saleswoman. for maintenance my calories are 3650 a day!! i knew it was high, but geez. i'm having trouble eating enough now, and im on a cut. i don't know how i'm gonna eat enough if i decide to go on a bulk. i'll be eating like 5800 calories a day. i guess that's where kfc and mcdonald's comes in.:)” 2:36:56 PM 2/08/04 “4 hours skiing this afternoon. Decisions decision. Stay on Phase 1 for another week, lose 7-14 lbs or go to Phase 2 and lose 1-2 lbs per week. Phase 2 is more palatable, allows complex carbs. Phase 1 allows minimal carbs. If I stay on Phase 1 another week, I will be at my target or within stiking distance.” 8:23:23 PM 2/08/04 “Down to 190 even! about 15 more to go.” 3:49:12 PM 2/09/04 “Been working out everyday for almost a month, and am down just 2 pounds. It really sucks to be middle aged. Am strong for backpacking though, so there is something good to look forward to. Upped my packweight for working out to 36 lbs. Literally run up the stairs at the college now.” 4:34:19 PM 2/09/04 “I tried to get up this morning and go to the gym but I couldn't crawl out of the bed. It was to late by the time I got home last night from Florida. I will make it up in the morning” 4:46:39 PM 2/09/04 “I wonder how many calories MB and I burned on Sat skiing(downhill that is). We really ripped up the slopes almost all day. By mid-late afternoon our quads were just a burnin... It was great! :)Was gonna go at it tonight on the eliptical machine, but was a late night at work and got too late by the time I got home. Unfortunately tomorrow's gonna be the same. Oh well I'll shoot for Wed night.” 6:46:52 PM 2/09/04 “i've been on south beach for 3 wks and have lost 14lbs. wha an easy deit.” 7:09:03 PM 2/09/04 “Have you guys heard the discussion regarding Dr. Atkins and his weight and heart troubles? Wonder what the truth really is. http://www.freep.com/news/health/diet11_20040211.htm I'm planning to start the South Beach diet on Monday next week. Between Valentine's Day, a wedding, and two birthday parties all this weekend, I think waiting until Moday is smart. :) Started reading the book last night.” 11:56:14 AM 2/11/04 “Started at 220 New Years, 204 today. 11-12 lbs to target. South Beach phase two starts this weekend. No exersize since Sunday except the ten minute walk from my car to my office, been working 14 hour days. :(” 7:27:49 AM 2/12/04 “Well, I started the South Beach diet today. Had an omlet this morning, and I've decided that there's no way I'll be able to eat eggs every day for 2 weeks. I may be eating turkey roll-ups for breakfast and lunch!! Anyone have some other options?” 11:00:33 AM 2/16/04 “I have no idea what is on the South Beach Diet but could you eat ceral with low fat or skim milk for breakfast and alternate back and forth with eggs?” 11:07:33 AM 2/16/04 “i eat eggs in the morning, but I eat the substitute eggs, make myself an omelete. It's okay, kind a got used to it. once in a while I substitute with high fiber ceral and skim milk. another good idea would be a veggie sandwich (that's my lunch lately). Not sure though if you can stomach that in the morning. Like ewker though, I have no clue what the sout beach diet is all about. there is a guy on the west coast that's looking for "fat" volunteers who want to lose weight while backpacking. He calls it "fatpacking".I know I can do this myself, but I can't find anyone that would be willing to go with me for 2 weeks, kinda like a "fat camp" LOL” 11:14:53 AM 2/16/04 Jump to Page << prev
