Been "off" the SB diet for a few weeks - I've changed the way I've eaten significantly, but still not what the SB diet calls for. I've not gained anything back, but I've not lost anything either. After April 16th, I'll get back to regular exercise and more improved eating habits. I can't do it, though, when I'm not home 4 or 5 nights a week. There's no time to cook, no time to exercise. :(

Hey gang. How's it going?

I've stablized at 198 eating South Beach Phase 3, sort of. Some exersize, but not as much as I'd like. That puts me at around 17-18% BF. I think to get to 15%, I'll step up the trail and bike time, start doing the strength training I've avoided by doing a lot of XC skiing.

I'm also in a place where walking in town doesn't get my HR up as high as I'd like. I either have to focus on training at altitude or picking up the pace by jogging, trail running.

Hey Pathman! Its not going too well on my end. I"m trying to stick to some new eating habits as much as possible, but I've been having quite a few failures. I haven't cooked a meal in about two weeks, I'm never ever home it seems!! 4 more weeks, and life will get better.

Hey Pathie! I am down to about 207 at this point. Lost about 20. The loss is not coming offa as rapidly as at first, but that's to be expected. But, I feel good. Now, to get my butt disciplined into the exercise regimen that i have been putting off...

The cross country skiing was really good. It seemed like my weight was melting away with all of the mileage I put in. I can't ski anymore this season, but I just started running yesterday and it felt good. The morning aerobics, pilates, yoga classes combined with running should keep me on the progress trail. I don't have any food discipline, but I figured out how to make progress in that regard as well. I just stopped buying bacon, eggs (Ihave high cholesterol), and there is no form of chocolate in the house. I have bacon and eggs once a week (and today is that day). No brownies or chocolate chip cookies. Fortunately I'm in such a remote location that when I get the chocolate joneses it's completely impractical to drive to a store. Keep going folks and be gentle with yourselves.

Doesn't anyone find this time of year disheartening? It's the end of heavy, cover-up clothes and the beginning of Girl Scout Cookie benders. A bad, bad combination.

Running girl, I don't find it disheartening at all. Normally I am junkie for Girl Scout cookies but this yr I have passed on every offer. The clothes I am wearing are way to big for me. I haven't bought new clothes yet cause I am not where I want to be. I guess I could hit some consignment shops for cheap clothes.

To me it is encouraging when I can pass up all the sweets that are passed around work. Even people have commented that I have done great with my will power.

For me it's been a bit discouraging in that I've been stalled for quite a while. Had a four pound drop one week, which made me happy in a way, (but was largely the result of a bad stomach flu), then gained back 3 lbs the next day, then stuck. It doesn't help that I seem to do a major cheat at least every other week. We go out to dinner or to a family gathering or a weekend potluck and after being good for so long, I end up saying, "Forget the diet, I'm eating." The good news is that I haven't gained back the weight I lost last winter (20 lbs) but neither am I making any progress on losing the next 20 lbs. I lost 9 pounds the first week, 5 pounds the second week, five more pounds over the next 3 weeks, and 2 pounds over the next three months. My fault, as I can't stay committed for more than a week at a time. But it's frustrating.

Ginny, I'm in the same boat. Its really tough to change your eating habits, and make them "stick". Its less about being on a "diet" and more about overall change. Really tough to do!

I also passed on the Girl Scout Cookies this year. Skiing is over here, but still have some snow shoeing left. It was like hiking in air conditioning yesterday. 43F, sunny and calm. I ended up stripped to my Hind tights and long sleeve poly top. Not a soul to be seen on the trail.

I know the perfect diet - guaranteed to tone your body and turn you into a lean mean hiking machine: simply put on a pack and start walking. Six months later, you'll have a body you can admire. Maybe not a perfect weight, but strong and fit.

Of course, the downside to that is that as soon as you stop hiking, the weight comes back. But for six months you're gorgeous!

Better still - you can eat anything you want while you're hiking -- cookies, ice cream, beer pizza - it's all allowed!

YEAH BABY!!!!
Well, the news I have been waiting for is in. I was aware that the low carb diet was working in the weight-loss category. That was apparent. But, I was wondering if my triglyceride level would finally come down from the high levels it's been at for the last couple of years. Well, the results are in. It's down from well over 400 to a NICE LOW 119!!

I am ecstatic. Well, Atkins worked for ME, I must say. I lost weight and got rid of a 'stroke and heart disease' potential at the same time!

Well I am down to 210 which is 23lbs lower than January first. I still have about 15lbs to go to reach my goal but I am now losing at a fairly steady 2-3lbs a week.
I wish i could say the same thing as Tree about my cholesteral. I just went to the dr and it is about 320 way too high. He said it is probably bad genes. Anyway now I am on a pill.

Tree are you medicated for your cholesteral?

I am still hoping to make my goal by June 1rst!

First off, congrats on the weight loss, Lt.

My cholestoral has been consistently good. It's the triglycerides that always gave me trouble. They are both lipid levels and related, but I never totally understood the difference. Anyhoo, my meds were for the latter. I am on Niaspan (a nyacin derivitive that makes your skin flush at times) and I have been taking the max on that (2000 mg). I am also on 160 mg of Tricor. If the diet didn't do the trick, I was going to have to see a specialist because the doc said the only other reason could be an enzyme that wasn't properly breaking down in my body. He is going to call tonight to modify my meds...

i don't even have them yet, Ewker!!! it was the evil cookie dough that was delivered last week, i'll blame my slight weight gain on that. the dough is in the freezer at home, out of sight, out of mind. i'll be making cookies this weekend and handing them to my boyfriend to take back to his roomates.

Yeah I am on the South Beach diet. The 2-3 pounds a week is on the weeks I don't cheat. After a cheating binge it usually takes me 2-3 days to recover but depending on the food it is worth it. sometimes you just need to have a pizza and beer.

The dr has me on Lipitor 20mg

I never really have quit phase 1 except I guess I have because I cheat. My Carb intake is still much lower than it was in the past so a slice of bread or a cookie once in a while doesn't hurt.

treebeard, i will not recognize you if I visit again. Great!

Tss, didn't weigh myself for over a week, but I really don't think I lost anything more then the 10 lb I already lost. I did cheat a couple days in a row, but am back on the SBD Phase one. I will continue this phase one until I feel I lost enough to take it slower.

I won't be on a stinken diet if I go backpacking though.

Way to go, treebeard! It's exciting to see your progress, as well as that of the others here.

I haven't checked in here for a while, but I suddenly dropped 2 pounds for no apparent reason last week. I was holding steady at 155 (my goal weight) for a long time, then BOOM! All of a sudden I'm at 153. That might help explain my running success last Sunday - less load to carry.... I'm hoping the race photographers (who take photos, send you a proof, ask you to buy a 5x7) caught me so I can compare to previous years. I weighed a little more in the past, but had a lot less muscle than now....

B-man. I know you are running a lot. But, are you still actively dieting? Hey, I can see my toes again! All ten of them! :)

3/24/04

Hey tree - yes and no. I haven't started gorging myself at meals, but I seem to be able to tolerate, for example, having a beer with my dinner whenever I want, and I've even eaten a few girl scout cookies this week. I don't need to lose any more weight, so as I increase my workouts (still only running about 60-70% of the mileage I want) I should be able to relax a bit on the food intake.

Congrats on the toes!

1-2 drinks/day?
"In the study, men with high blood pressure who reported having about one or two drinks a day were 44 percent less likely to die of cardiovascular causes such as heart attacks than men with hypertension who rarely or never drank."

That means 7 drinks Fri & Sat or 14 drinks on Sat? Thank God I only drink on saturdays now! Although I tend to lose count of my drinks...

lol. Thanks about the digits!

I still need to work the exercise regimen thing out. I am still clinging to that age old excuse of not having enough time to exercise regularly. But, I have to get this done...

Can you use all the tobasco you want? :)

In all honesty (and I haven't read most of this thread so excuse me if I'm repeating) I lost weight by changing my diet for good. And the number one thing I did was to almost completely eliminate cheese. Then again I may have had a cheese addiction meaning this technique would only work for cheeseaholics.
