I was in that area, west of Yankton, but in Nebraska, a few years back. It was Twilight Zone-ish... going west past the rec areas on the Missouri on an old hard-surfaced road in the middle of nowhere. The road was in rough shape and had no signs.

On one hillside, there were the remnants of some old ski resort. REALLY!!! LOL! The chair lift was still there. Apparently it was some old subdivision development that never went anywhere. One place it looked like there were a few nice homes closer to the Missouri.

I did some searching on the Net and found the area was called Devil's Nest, if I remember right, cuz some outlaws hid on the Missouri there. I'm thinking it was the James brothers and cohorts.

From there, we went on to the Santee Sioux Reservation and town of Niobrara. Nice, elegant bridge across the MO there, which I understood replaced a ferry. It didn't look too old, either.

“Yeah, the problem isn't so much that the bridge goes to nebraska. It's that it doesn't go anywhere in Nebraska, there's just nothing there on the other side. It's a pork bridge.”
