Black Mountain on the Cumberland Trail - Tennessee
A GREAT short hike on a CLEAR, cold, winter day is the new Black Mountain Trail. The views are spactacular! Often, the top of Back Mountain is snow covered, making a beautiful snowy playground.

It is a SHORT trail, at only 1.7 miles, but just off I-40, so that makes it a good place to stretch your legs while traveling from Nashville to Knoxville. The one lane road to the developed trailhead is paved too, so you don't have to worry about getting stuck.

A decent trail map and directions is at:

Best time to be on the Black Mountain south overlook is early in the morning. A great sunrise!

A great day to be hiking! It was nice and clear today, probaby 40 degrees on Black. We could see all the way to the Smokies from the south overlook, over 100 miles! There was a small amount of haze over the Tennessee River near the Watts Bar Cooling Tower, but clear otherwise. Joe got some great B&W pictures with his 120. He does his own developing.
