What Crap!!!!!!!View MessagesBush you suck!!!!!!!!!! “Bush Policy to Allow More Logging in Alaska Forest Wed Dec 24, 1:24 AM ET Add Top Stories - Reuters to My Yahoo! ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - The Bush administration opened up undeveloped areas of the largest U.S. national forest to logging on Tuesday, scrapping a Clinton-era rule aimed at protecting the wilderness. Reuters Photo The U.S. Forest Service announced that it will exempt the Tongass National Forest in southeastern Alaska from a national rule prohibiting timber cutting in roadless areas. The decision means about 300,000 acres of dense, old-growth rain forest will be available for logging. The forest covers nearly 17 million acres. Timber industry supporters said it would help revitalize a regional timber industry that has faltered since the area's two pulp mills closed in the 1990s. "We welcome this good news, coming as it has at Christmas time, as a boost to the people and communities of Southeast," Gov. Frank Murkowski said in a news release. "This was a vital step in our plan to rebuild the Southeast timber industry. The Tongass should again support a vibrant timber industry." Environmentalists portrayed the policy change as a violation of public trust. They said the road-building likely to accompany the new logging could affect 2.5 million acres of the forest. "The Bush administration has turned its back on the public, good science and the law in its effort to clearcut the Tongass," Tom Waldo, a Juneau-based attorney for the environmental group Earthjustice, said in a news release. "This is obviously a Christmas present from the Bush administration to the timber industry, which wants the right to clearcut in America's greatest temperate rainforest." The Tongass sprawls over spruce- and hemlock-covered islands, rain-drenched coastline, mountains and glaciers. It has long been the subject of debate between environmental and timber-industry interests. Although parts of the forest have been heavily logged, the remainder is considered North America's last major old-growth temperate rain forest. The old-growth trees are prized by environmentalists, fishermen and hunters for their contribution to the natural habitat, but also by loggers for their commercial value. The two sides disagree about the effect of roads on the forest. Environmentalists say they damage the habitat, while development advocates say they allow local residents better access to the forest for a variety of uses. 8|” 11:28:39 AM 12/24/03 “Don't blame me, I voted for the Democrats” 11:30:34 AM 12/24/03 -- Logging in Alaska Forest -- “Another satisfied customer! thank you sir, may I have another.... thank you sir, may I have another.... thank you sir, may I have another.... thank you sir, may I have another....” 11:33:32 AM 12/24/03 “Hope that town in Texas finds its idiot!” 11:36:15 AM 12/24/03 “I love the comment about 'good science' as if there is Bad science. Bad science. Bad bad bad bad bad. More proof, that scientists are the only objective ones on this planet (that we are raping)” 11:36:54 AM 12/24/03 “It's called politcal science.” 11:38:32 AM 12/24/03 “"The Bush administration has turned its back on the public" Says one thing and does another! 8\” 11:39:14 AM 12/24/03 “Oh no, I think they made it quite clear that they were going to rape the environment, strip it of it's mineral wealth, resources, pollute the air and water, put money back into the pockets of big business and wait for the 'trickle down effect' to take effect and boost the economy. There was no lying. You just failed to listen. 30 years of Clean Water Act down the drain in a single administration. Excuse the pun.” 11:46:55 AM 12/24/03 “An interesting read about Bush's stance on clean water http://www.amrivers.org/waterquality/defendingcwa.htm” 11:50:03 AM 12/24/03 “Yep biz - I think they're counting on it - they cover up the damage being done and then try and highlight the tiny benefits that businesses conceed to the enviroment from the additional profits they make through relaxed regulations.” 11:52:30 AM 12/24/03 “If this happens we will all be investing in top of the line water pumps And chorline tablets And iodine pills, and we will want to treat our water with all three.” 11:53:27 AM 12/24/03 “I thought this was a part two of Biz's Farting thread gone bad :-)” 11:54:05 AM 12/24/03 "Good Science" “It's the Healthy Forests Initiative. If ya clearcut 'em, they won't die of disease.” 12:00:26 PM 12/24/03 “lol At least they're being proactive” 12:02:43 PM 12/24/03 “ ![]() President Bush smells the branch of sage in the presence of a Forest Service volunteer. Five minutes after the photo was taken, he ordered the forest logged and told the volunteer to 'get a job'." Read up on Jr.'s, get this, I'm not making this up..."Healthy Forests Initiative"” 12:06:55 PM 12/24/03 “11 more months, get busy everyone!” 12:52:08 PM 12/24/03 “He will be elected again.” 12:53:31 PM 12/24/03 “Doesn't that imply he was elected the first time, WK?” 12:56:48 PM 12/24/03 “OOPS. Right, my bad.” 12:59:16 PM 12/24/03 “Ouch” 12:59:30 PM 12/24/03 “What a crock of sh-t. I hate Bush so much.” 12:59:51 PM 12/24/03 “Go to google.com, enter "unelectable", and hit 'I'm feeling lucky'.” 1:02:59 PM 12/24/03 Dat Chit Is DEEP!!! “I started to read the Healthy Forest Initiative but had to stop because of all the fluffy buzzwords. They make it sould like by leaving the forests be they will become "unhealthy", and logging is the solution to making the forests healthy again.” 2:13:11 PM 12/24/03 “Now we have Bush's fuzzy science to go with his fuzzy math and fuzzy English.” 2:16:05 PM 12/24/03 “To stop forest fires____remove the trees!” 2:45:50 PM 12/24/03 Take action “I think everyone here has a right to be pissed off about what this administration is doing to our environment. Every one of us knows and I am sure the old-timers (like myself) here have seen what has happened to what little wilderness we have left. At times I feel helpless and frustrated about the encrotchment(sp) of our wildlands and feel the need to do something about it. But I am just one person. I preach and do my best to do my part to preserve and conserve our nature resources but it does not seem to be enough. I have found, if anyone is interested, a couple of groups/organizations that are trying to do something about this delema. They are listed below. http://www.twp.org/index.html http://www.newildernesstrust.org I am also on an environmental action list that calls for us to write letters to our governmental representatives periodically. I guess my only point here is if you are feeling as frustrated as I at times it helps me to feel that I am part of the group that is fighting for the cause, even if it is only in a letter expressing my concerns to someone who may or may not give a crap.” 2:57:32 PM 12/24/03 Another Organization “Here is another group that is using the Endangered Species Act to force the government to preserve our lands. They do a great job. http://www.sw-center.org/swcbd/” 3:08:26 PM 12/24/03 9:03:07 PM 12/24/03 “ya know Buddha Bear I fear opening one of your links almost as much as opening one of Violins” 9:13:14 PM 12/24/03 “Plant BUSH!!” 10:24:17 PM 12/24/03 “Buck Fush!” 12:00:05 AM 12/25/03 “What do u expect from jerk off republicans and now they want to put Reagan (remember Watt?) on the dime in place of FDR creator of the CCC” 10:36:58 AM 12/25/03 “It's a growing world out there! Wood doesn't grow on trees ya know...oh wait a tick...” 4:43:52 PM 12/25/03 “I was speaking to my extremely, far right, conservative brother tonight and brought up this topic with him. He said, and I quote.... "Wouldn't cutting the trees down prevent forest fires?" I asked him where he heard that, and he replied he read it as part of some platform. My reply - "Yes, if you ci=ut the trees down, there won't be any more forest fires bro, cuase there will be no forest."” 6:58:50 PM 12/25/03 “You just can't argue with logic like that.” 7:02:33 PM 12/25/03 “My reply - "Yes, if you ci=ut the trees down, there won't be any more forest fires bro, cuase there will be no forest."" ...and breathable air and in the end no more human beings...” 7:12:01 PM 12/25/03 “Without a doubt this is the beginning of the end. The sky is falling.” 7:22:02 PM 12/25/03 “So exactly where do you all think we would get lumber if we did not use our own resources?” 8:01:31 AM 12/26/03 duh... “Where have we gotten it up till now?” 8:39:26 AM 12/26/03 “"RECYCLE"” 8:40:13 AM 12/26/03 “Canada?” 8:41:34 AM 12/26/03 “You've heard of sustainable forest management - where trees are planted by humans?” 8:45:25 AM 12/26/03 “Wasn't that the original bases of hemp farming? By this I mean back in the 1700's where hemp was used for multiple items such as rope and paper.” 8:49:25 AM 12/26/03 If It's OUR Forests... What Do WE Get From It “Forest fires have been a part of Earth's history as long as trees and lightning have existed. The reason there are so many fires in populated regions is because they built homes in fore-prone areas. I can see this logging as maybe necessary in parts surrounding these areas in order to reduce the impact of future fires on local property, but to just go in and log "protected" forests where there is noone living leads me to believe it's just big-business between out King and his Court.” 8:53:42 AM 12/26/03 “It is such a waste that we can't utilized hemp. While you can't frame a house with it you can save a lot of trees from being ground up for paper and rope. I think there are some unseen concerns when it comes to hemp farming though. It'd be worth a shot though. I'm all for alternatives but to think we can get along without any logging is just silly.” 8:57:35 AM 12/26/03 “It's important that timber interests consume the last piece of the pie. Seeing all those trees just growing and not making them any money just drives them nuts.” 8:58:28 AM 12/26/03 “Hemp? Hemp is good.” 9:11:11 AM 12/26/03 “It's called control. One way to control an area is to make access to that area. If you allow logging you will have to make roads. Once you have roads in the roadless areas of the Tongass National Forest we will have control of the area. From there the sky is the limit.” 9:15:51 AM 12/26/03 “Did you know that there are only three areas of extensive natural "frontier forest" left on Earth? They are in Russia, the Amazon basin, and in Canada/Alaska. Looks like there will only be two left now.” 7:09:01 AM 12/27/03 “A healthy forest can not exist unless a good old american car can leave tire tracks in it.” 4:06:28 PM 12/27/03
