yesterday, running girl, dog and i hiked up the priest on the AT (boy was staying over at a friends). we parked at rt. 56 and took the AT south for 4.5 miles, elevation gain was about 3100 +- ft. it was a beautiful day. the creeks were running full and the water shimmering down some of the rock faces was beautiful. there were a few icy sections tucked in the hollows on the north side of the mountain but, for the most part, the trail was in fine shape. dog picked up a companion in the form of a hunting dog about 1/2 way up. he decided to take the rest of the day off from work and hike with us, putting in a token alarm to a scent trail about 2/3 of the way up. we went and sat on the outcrops on top and had some lunch. views were unlimited on this clear, beautiful day. left about 2 p.m. for the hike back down to the car. we only saw 3 other people. one lady sitting on a rock in the sun reading a book near the top and then a couple heading up shortly after we started back down. it was a wonderful day spent with my wonderful wife and our dog. i am very thankful for it. i wish boy would have been there.

baume, that is an excellent hike up to the top. A few friends and I did that section of the AT a year ago spring. We went a bit further south (about another 25 miles a guess). We started at Rockfish gap and hiked south about 45 miles to a gravel road. I remember that climb you are talking about though, we did that on our first morning out. The creeks were spectacular then to. It was clouded in until we got to the top. I finally found out what it takes to wear out Abbey (my boxer). That is a very nice area in there. Glad you had a nice time.

Nice trip report
Thanks for sharing it. Perhaps I'll get to do that trip myself in 2004. Virginia has some beautiful scenery. Glad you had fun.
