They Last Approximately 2 Years
Well, I bought my first Vector in June '99 and had needed it reconditioned in July '01. Suunto, under the impression it was to be "reconditioned" for between $35-50, replaced it with a new one for $35. Well, the new one is now showing the same signs of malfunction.

For the past few weeks the LEDs have been whack as the horizontal lines will disappear/reappear when handling the watch. Today during a long walk I noticed the altimeter showed I was at 28,000-something feet. Sure enough, when looking at the Altimeter mode Log Book for the walk, the readings showed an undeterminable ASC reading with an average ascent rate of 179 ft/min; the DSC was 2670' with an average descent rate of 633 ft/min; and 7 laps. Believe me, those figures are WRONG!!!

And now for a second time I need to return the watch for servicing. I dig this watch and it's functions and I use it on all my hikes, so I hope they don't give me any trouble regarding a second reconditioning. Wish me luck.

My altimeter by them didn't last very long at all.

Never again! to much money to spend on a product that barely outlives the warranty.

Sounds like a pressure sensor is out of tolerance, or maybe there's an A/D converter problem? There may be a sensitivity setting or calibration adjustment that could be done.

After a while, you might just ask for a fresh replacement. Worth a shot.

Let us know what happens.

Don't you just hate it when the Earth's magnetic poles flip like that?

Bad things happen. They just do.

I have a Timex alti watch and while the Sunntos are head and shoulders about this piece of crap I have I’m convinced that wrist top altis are not my style. I’m thinking when I make the switch I’ll get a small downloading GPS.

My watch altimeter is much more accurate than my gps. Especially in the woods.

"My watch altimeter is much more accurate than my gps. Especially in the woods."

Isn't the altimeter on gps based on triangulation of satilites rather than just simple barimetric pressure? I took a break once and reset my watch to the known altitude and by the end of the break it said I had gained like 50' of elevation.

5-6 Weeks Turnaround
Got ahold of the Returns Rep at Suunto USA. Good thing I called back today because when I first called over 4 hours ago I left a telephone message saying to return my phone call. Who knows how long I could've waited till they called me back?

Anywho... Depending on how much the watch needs "reconditioned", the cost will be between $35-$75. Last time they gave me a brand new watch and charged me $35...I hope they're just as generous this time too.

I'm Complete Again
WOO HOO!!! After 3 looong weeks of hell my Vector just arrived and boy does it smell like a new car. No scratches, dents, and it even has one of those clear plastic covers over the display. If'n I didn't know better, I'd say it was a brand new watch. Maybe the new Owner's Manual means something???

And they charged me to the lowest amount...$35.

Buddur -- Vector Recondition
Buddur -- How did you go about getting your Vector reconditioned - mine is a little "odd" -- does everyone change the cover and o-ring each battery change? with the battery going bad 1/year it is a pain getting the replacement kit each time.

Suunto vector, five years, four battery changes.

I was in the mountains today and the altimeter was right on. I was doing an in and out. I crossed a saddle and into a tight hollow. On the way back my altimeter was way off and jumped around. When I got back across the saddle the wind was at my face.

My altimeter had a completely different reading on the other side of the saddle. I finally figured out that the wind in the area was creating a high pressure reading in the hollow.

Cool.

I have only been wearing my seiko automatic 200m divers watch for 6 years. The second in 22 years. I have to have something that is bomb proof or I will break it.

Never could keep one. I actually had one for keeping times when I ran but they never last if I wear one all the time. Just PT.
