Replacement Sponsons “I have a 14' Radisson Canoe that is about 12 years old and the sponsons on the sides have gotten pretty beat up over the years and need to be replaced. Does any on know where I can find them? Radisson (Sportspal in Canada) doesn't seem to have a web site.” 10:15:12 PM 12/29/03 “The FBI is warning police nationwide to be alert for people carrying canoes, cautioning that the popular water-conveyance devices cover everything from Old Towne Canoes to kayaks which could be used for terrorist planning. In a bulletin to be sent New Years Day to about 18,000 police organizations, the FBI said terrorists may use caboes "to assist with target selection and pre-operational planning." It urged officers to watch during searches, traffic stops and other investigations for anyone carrying canoes, especially if the canoes are used in suspicious ways. "The practice of researching potential targets is consistent with known methods of al-Qaida and other terrorist organizations that seek to maximize the likelihood of operational success through careful planning," the FBI wrote. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the bulletin this week and verified its authenticity. "For local law enforcement, it's just to help give them one more piece of information to raise their suspicions," said David Heyman, a terrorism expert for the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies. "It helps make sure one more bad guy doesn't get away from a traffic stop, maybe gives police a little bit more reason to follow up on this." The FBI noted that use of canoes may be innocent, "the product of legitimate recreational or commercial activities." But it warned that when combined with suspicious behavior -- such as apparent surveillance -- a person with a canoe "may point to possible terrorist planning." The manufacturer of Old Towne Canoes said Monday terrorists would probably find submarines more useful than the collection of canoes they offer. "While we doubt that our canoes would be of particular interest to people who would wish to do us harm, we will certainly cooperate to the fullest with national authorities at any level they deem appropriate," ownerr John Smith said. The FBI said uses typically found for canoes that could be useful for terrorists includes waterfront surveying of profiles of cities and states, and synchronizing of attacks on waterways, bridges, dams, reservoirs, nuclear plants and waterfront landmarks. It said the canoe is often accompanied by floatation devices, paddles, GPS, maps, and picnic basket. The FBI urged police to report such discoveries to the local U.S. Joint Terrorism Task Force."” 11:00:55 PM 12/29/03 “No one has info I can actually use?” 7:28:41 PM 12/30/03 “lumber is it that black foam like stuff about 3-4 inches thick that runs up the side of the canoe? I have no idea where you can get it.” 7:47:11 PM 12/30/03 “That's it. One of them broke in half last summer. The sun and brush have taken their toll on my poor canoe.” 7:49:59 PM 12/30/03 8:33:37 PM 12/30/03 “There ya go leave it to the mainiac to find um!” 9:20:29 PM 12/30/03 “May not be the same Radisson you knew 14 years ago, but here's a site for them: http://www.bwmarineproducts.com/canoes.htm Hope it helps.” 9:41:14 PM 12/30/03
