Pictures From A Holiday Treat...View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 24 of 24 messages posted.
...From Citigroup “I used to work in the Citigroup building (slanted top) ![]() And when I was in there, every year at holiday time, they had a model train exhibit that I found to be so elaborate, it was phenomenal. So, every year, I make it a point to go see it. Personally, I like this stuff. Maybe you do, and maybe you aren't such an enthusiast about it. Either way, I took a bunch of pics and thought I would share my attempt to try and make this look as cool in pictures as it does in real life. It takes two 53 foot trucks to bring it in and set-up time is 30 hours. There is a computerized control room that operates it and it's worth a look. It starts out in the city setting, then moves across the river and further upstate to the Adirondacks. And it is sectioned off in each segment, but still part of one big entity. A few of them may be out of order, but you will get the point. Trains” 8:32:46 AM 12/31/03 Great pics! 8:53:03 AM 12/31/03 “I don't think they took it to that level, Bit. Glad you enjoyed them anyway. It really is a cool exhibit...” 8:56:05 AM 12/31/03 “How long does it take the train to go around the whole thing?” 8:58:04 AM 12/31/03 “Hey cool, Treebeard! I think I could see some little, tiny backpackers in the Adirondacks.” 8:58:07 AM 12/31/03 “Neat stuff- really intricate. Thanks for posting pics.” 8:58:25 AM 12/31/03 “That's so neat!” 8:58:42 AM 12/31/03 “Thanks for a visit to New York!” 8:59:54 AM 12/31/03 “yo - where were the barns advertising "See Rock City" ? (yeah I know what do you expect up in yankee land)” 9:03:25 AM 12/31/03 “Bit, actually, there are probably at least a dozen different trains going in and out of the various settings. So, it's hard to determine how long it takes to go around. Plus, it goes into mountains and standing in any one place, it's impossible to get a view of the whole thing at once.” 9:04:19 AM 12/31/03 “That's pretty cool. It's hard to grasp the scale from your pics, even though you've got shots of it from above. But the sheer number of locales represented is amazing.” 9:05:57 AM 12/31/03 “Are the trains running on time? That blue pickup truck reminds me of the one that was stolen in '80.” 9:20:27 AM 12/31/03 “"Hey cool, Treebeard! I think I could see some little, tiny backpackers in the Adirondacks." aero 08:58:07 AM I think thats Lumberzac and Gremlin, Aero!” 9:21:20 AM 12/31/03 “Cool, tree! I used to collect train stuff - still have all of it out in the shed, actually. I was into it when I was a kid, maybe 10 years old or so. It can develop into a really expensive, time consuming, but fun, of course, hobby.” 9:29:06 AM 12/31/03 “It sure can, B-man. I used to have a pretty extensive Lionel setup when i was a kid. Then, we had it in a store room in the basement of the apartment building we lived in. It disappeared when the neighborhood started going downhill in the 70's. But, you are right about the price on these things. Wow!” 9:32:54 AM 12/31/03 “Yeah, I thouht I saw lumberzac and gremlin moonin' us.” 9:35:38 AM 12/31/03 “It's not me backpacking. I'm much too big to fit in there. Thanks for sharing Treebeard.” 9:35:54 AM 12/31/03 “lol. No prob, Zac!” 9:36:19 AM 12/31/03 “Just took a walk in Times Square. It's an incredible place to be on New Year's Eve. I used to go fairly often, but these days doing more of a family thing. But, if nothing else, I take a walk through there during the day. Reason being is that, even though it's twelve hours early, the excitement can be felt building there already. A few partyers and revelers, but mostly set-up. Especially this year. NYPD out in full force. You can feel the energy in the streets there. Tourists snapping photos, lots of pumped up people and of course... ...The Naked Cowboy!” 10:35:10 AM 12/31/03 “Bit, I went back there today and took Maple and my son to see it. I asked the guy your questions. He said there are 28 engines (some with longer trains and some shorter ones) running at one time. It also takes about 3 to 3 1/2 minutes to go through the whole thing and come around again... Oh, and one more cool thing: when the night scene falls every few minutes or so, the drive-in theater screen in Generak shows 'High Noon' with Gary Cooper...” 9:40:24 PM 12/31/03 “That really cool. I've never seen such an elaborate setup. Dollywood in East TN used to have a model train museum, but it wasn't anything like as detailed and diverse as this.” 7:20:23 AM 1/01/04 “If you like model trains, and find yourself in Fairbanks, there is a great one at the Alaska Railroad Station.” 8:52:26 AM 1/01/04 “Cool, Path! Fairbanks is also a prime spot to observe the northern Lights...” 7:55:15 AM 1/02/04 “Am letting the slideshow load right now. As far as "See Rock City"... well it IS THE NORTH, so I would expect it would be "See Wall Drug" signs. lol” 8:01:18 AM 1/02/04
