smiley,
Tarabull told me you are an MTU grad. Or at least I think it was you she was refering to. Is this true

No we haven't met. Tarabull has invited me on one of her day hikes but I didn't get the message until the trip was over. Hope to meet you all someday.

Back in October I sent out a thread on winter tents and during the conversations tara asked where in Michigan I lived. I said that I went to Da Tech and she mentioned you did also. Saw you post and wondered if it was the same smiley.

I guess I missed that thread. When were you at da Tech? I graduated in 1996.

I'm an old fart, smiley...I went there in the mid 70's. Ran out of money the end of my junior year, went to work and traveled for a few years then went back to school at WMU and graduated from there.

I hear that Tech has not changed that much though. I'll be passing through there this summer on my way to Isle Royal so it will be interesting to see it again.

Well, it has changed. Couple of new buildings. Taco Bell in town. Library Bar was re-built after the fire.

I was there for the job fair this week. The students are totally different now. Still well educated and outgoing. But, the girls dress like they're sluts! What happened to the flannel shirts and hats on campus? I saw more belly shirts and low-cut jeans on campus while it was snowing one day in October than I had in 4 1/2 years at Tech, including summers!

Wow, I used to work at the Library Bar as a cook. I had heard it burnt but wasn't sure if had been re-built.

Is the ratio of guys to girls still 3:1? Yeah, when I went we didn't see too much skin. Everyone was flannel shirts and down jackets until June.

It was a good school, tough, but a good school.

The Library fire happened the first day of my senior year there. We had the windows open in the house I lived in that night on Quincy St. (down by the bridge), and smelled a lot of smoke in the morning. Didn't think much of it. Found out what happened on our way to campus.

Senior walk that year, we brought a flask and had a toast in the street in front of the LIbrary. JB (I think??) the owner stood in the doorway of the bar and watched us. He just didn't want anyone inside the building.

Took them over a year to re-build. THe new place is nice, the onion soup is as good as ever, but the atmosphere is totally different. Not as dark as it was, no dumbwaiter to bring your food to the 2nd floor.

I remember is was pretty crampt, especially going upstairs on that spiral staircase.

My first year there I lived in Wadsworth Hall. When the first snow fell it was tradition to have a snowball fight between the differnt Halls and across US41. I remember seeing a truck driver getting hit by snowballs as he passed through. He was so pissed he stopped his truck in the middle of the road, got out and proceeded to start yelling at some of us. The next thing I saw was a wall of snow coming down in this guy. Pretty stupid of him.

Was Diamond Mike's still open when you were there? It was a bar that was on the left hand said just as you entered downtown Houghton.

Did they still have K-Day when you were there?

I'm taking my daughter to Isle Royal early next summer. Have you been there? If you have which service did you use to get there? I'm thinking about taking the one out of Copper Harber that way she'll be able to see that area too. It's so beautiful up there.

I lived in Wads too, and I participated in two of the snowball fights. Did you ever "tray" down the hill between Wads and co-ed? My roommate broke her wrist while doing that.

Never heard of Diamond Mike's. I think the Doghouse (Douglass Saloon) is the first bar on the left.

K-Day is still a big tradition. You should sign up for the weekly alumni e-newsletter. Keeps you up to date with pretty much everything going on. You even get reports about K-Day and spring fling.

I went to Isle Royale a few years ago. It was my first backpacking trip. Went with a couple of my sorority sisters. We went out of Copper Harbor, then stayed in Houghton after our trip for a reunion. I love spending time up there. Hey, if you get a chance while you're there, try to meet up with Sunshine. She lives in Lake Linden or somewhere nearby. She's really great. :)

I had heard that Wads went coed. It wasn't when I was there. I didn't spend much time there anyway. Most of my time was spent in the library or the labs.

Oh yeah, I did some traying down that hill. Thinking about it now I'm surprised I didn't brake something. It was a blast.

The Doghouse was in Hancock when I was there. They must have moved into Mike's. Get this, we were able to buy pitchers of beer back then for $0.35. Needless to say I killed a few brain cells at Mike's.

Thanks for the tip on the e-newletter. I'll have to check it out. It would be good to keep up on what's going on.

Hey, if you and/or your friends are interested there's a snowshoe trip coming up the weekend of Jan 19th. The details are on Backpacker.com in the Midwest trail talk forum under MRT Update, 2004. Sounds like it might be fun.

Hey maple go check out 8 Beaks and do a little shopping. Read the testimonials for some additional entertainment. Check out the African Grey named Knuckles. She looks just like our Tiger.

That's cool. The 8 Beaks lady is expensive. She makes all the toys too. Well I think the materials she uses are purchased elsewhere...
I think the birds in our office are bored. Tiger likes to start little "projects" like working all the screws that hold her cage together loose. Then she pulls them out and tosses them into the mess that is the bottom of her cage, never to be found again. She's a smart one. : )
