If you want to hike the mountains that are in the movie you'll have to go to Romania. The real Cold Mountain is about halfway between the NC Cherokee reservation and Asheville in the Pisgah NF.

My buddy Curt beat me to it, but here's his TR.. -- emailed to me.

I already beat you there. Debbie and I day hiked up there this past Sunday.
It took us about 8 hours of hiking, but it was nice. I would imagine a
spring hike would be great.

There is a series of tent spots back down the trail from the summit. There
are also good views to the north from the camping area. Bad news- fires are
not allowed in the wilderness area, so bring provisions for cooking on a
stove. The distance is 5.2 miles uphill ahd 5.2 miles back down. The trail
is fairly nice, with only a few spots of lots of rocks. There are several
stream crossings on the way up for water, nothing dangerous. Near the top
there is a PVC pipe water source from a spring right on the trail. Last
water before the summit.

Another camping option is Deep Gap, 1.4 miles back down from the summit and
3.8 from the parking lot. Nice level spot.

I may be able to work in another trip up.

TD, are you still planning on a Ramsey Cascade trip this spring?

skidder.

LOL Quote from the article
Plenty of these Inman wannabes turn around when they realize the steep 10.4-mile round-trip hike is an all-day affair best left to the stout-legged. The trail is as overgrown as ZZ Top's facial hair and lacks any markers, which is why the innkeepers at our lodge arranged for a hiking guide to sherpa us city folk up the mountain. Gotta love that Southern hospitality.

My journey to reach cold mtn. started from the Daniel Boone boyscout camp on the east side, it was october and the leaves pretty much covered the obscure, unmaintained trail...i somehow got off the trail(hmmm...too much gazing about) and when night fell, I ended up camping on some ridge up there..when i woke up , i found myself swimming in a sea of fall color , just beautiful,..but even with a compass and map, i had not a clue as to where i was. I was solo and recovering from ankle surgery, so, i thought it best to go back and start over! it took me all day sloshing thru leaves, to get back down. The caretaker back down at the camp suggested i drive over to ivestor gap and hike to cold mtn from there.
It was pretty neat..i hiked in and camped at shining rocks...then did shining rocks to cold mtn as a dayhike because i had lost a day of my vacation. The hike along the narrows and thru deep gap was very cool...rocky and "stair stepped"..
That night at shining rocks, the wind blew up something fierce and it got reeeely cold. It was flurrying snow on my hike out the next morning.
that was in 99....from your friends account, it sounds like the trail is more visible nowadays, but it was pretty hairy..like zz top...a few years back.

are you planning this trip during a full moon?

Om, I know that caretaker from 99, he's a real nice man. He used to be the Scoutmaster for the troop where I used to live, his son was an assistant when I was SM in 98/99.

It does get cold up there - even in June. A couple of kids got hypothermia the first week of camp in mid June a few years back.

OK, I just saw this movie yesterday. (After hiking and breaking the camera!! phhhhhhht!!!)

Beautiful scenery. And my god, a lot of lives were lost in the Civil War.

Pretty good movie. Battle scenes were atrocious. The ending somewhat puzzled me, but then I thought about it and realized that's how it had to end.

WARNING: Don't read below if you don't want to know the ending!!!

I guess it had to end that way. Kind of Greek tragedy-ish. Standard forumula.

REALLY DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW **A LOT** ABOUT THIS MOVIE!!!!

Yeah, Stove, I was really disappointed. Geez. But, then I remembered the forumula for tragedies -- oh and I DID HAVE that MOVIE THEORY class in college.

It's kinda like Mad Max or a Western or a Greek tragedy. You have the longer guy, who is outside society. And in this case, REALLY outside society, since he's a deserter.

They got their one night of passion and the goodness that was in him lives on in the form of their daughter. The dishonor of deserting and just all the horrors that he had seen were allowed to go away with his honorable death (his life given specifically so the rest could live on) (and didn't we all LOVE seeing that white-haired, albino-esque freak get killed!!)

And apparently, Adda (Ada?) could live on happily after looking in that well; the clouds cleared to sunshine. Apparently that was relief to her, no more foreboding stuff to worry about. And she was surrounded by family and friends, apparently everyone having a man but her (but she had a precious daughter).

She was very honorable in her way, too. Sheesh, everyone was way too honorable! I thought he'd get back, the war would be over, deserters forgiven and life would go on. NOPE!

just walked in from seeing the movie, way, way to draining and depressing. Seems nothing has been learned from previous wars. SENSELESS killings.
The acting and story were very good,my friend said it was true to the ending in the book. There were lines in the movie where I wanted to laugh out loud, but I stifled myself as noone else here in the Big Apple thought it humorous

No one laughed?? There were some funny moments!! And yeah, I was pretty sad from the huge opening battle scene on.

And Renee Zellweger (sp?) was great. It took my probably half an hour to finally be sure that was her!!
