I don't think the various uses of tent stakes got mentioned - but one alternative use of tent stakes is to make a pot stand with them - for example if using esbit fuel

I must have missed the uses of tent stakes, could you repost them? The only one I saw was as pot holders and it's on there.

well another use is to use a tent stake instead of a trowel for digging a cat hole

Dub - your link isn't working for me - maybe it's too crowded.

Coop, I just checked the link http://jeremy.qn.net/backpacking/gear/multiusegear.htm...only 22 hits...shouldn't be crowded. Maybe the server was under some maintenance when you clicked?

Snowshoes can be used to walk through (on?) most bogs.

Redhawk, I was going to add that one and your old clothes suggestion under a new techniques section. Thanks for the suggestion.

Coop, it took a while to type.

fire starter that works
i've found that unempty egg carten, the cardboard type, stuff with dry lint and wax pourd over it works well and is amazingly light. It will burn hot and for at lest 7 to 10 mins more than enugh time to drive out evey the sogest of logs. Its saves lots of time finding and perpairing the really small stuff
i've started fries with this in the rain in a fire pit that was more like a lake then a fire pit.

Hi..I've used the egg carton firestarters for years with some additions..I don't have access to lint so use cotton balls..I also add candle wicks, the kind you buy in craft stores for those who make candles, cut to about 1 1/2 inches which I stick under the cotton balls: egg carton, melted (duh) wax, cotton ball, wick dipped in wax so it'll stick to the cotton ball, more wax. Will stay lit in pouring rain..other ideas..AOL cd's might make good stove stands..I gotta try..and I haveta say that many of the uses listed under "TP", something I've NEVER brought with me, are the things I listed for the Viva paper towel sheets I DO bring with me..toilet paper is way too flimsy to be useful IMHO;)

No access to lint?!

Does that mean your belly button is sewn shut?

(Sorry, couldn't resist) ;)

Entrenching tool
I'll carry a civilian version of this on a 3 day jaunt instead of a plastic trowel. It weighs less than a lb,The shovel is about 6 inches wide. A hatchet edge and a
saw edge make up its'sides with a
nail puller in the center.
An added metal strip on the on the shovel bottom holds a bottle opener,3 different nut size wrench
holes with a flat hammer edge on
each side. The 7 inch metal handle
wrapped in heavy plastic is hollow
with a threaded compass on the end. I removed the fish lines and hooks and replaced them with tp inside the handle.I carry this tool just outside my pack in easy
reach as a quick defense weapon against trail critters(eh eh) or to remedy a quick hershey squirt.

I use a Snowpeak spork as a trowel..it is great at getting thru plant roots..I do not, however, use it to refill catholes..I'm not that curious to see how much interference my body can handle..how heavy is that entrenching tool of your, elfskin2

Cool Whip Container
Two tricks for using artridge stoves in cold weather.

Cut an old mouse pad a little larger than the base of the stove, it will insulate it from the cold ground.

Carry an old cool whip container and set the stove in it. As the stove burns and the cartridge gets colder, add warm water to the cool whip container and watch the performance of the stove increase drastically

CELL PHONES....
1. Call home.

2. Call work.

3. Call buddies who wouldn't come.

4. Annoy me with it so badly that I snatch it from you and beat you in the head with it.
