Spirit Lands on Mars and Sends Postcards
A traveling robotic geologist from NASA has landed on Mars and returned stunning images of the area around its landing site in Gusev Crater.

Mars Exploration Rover Spirit successfully sent a radio signal after the spacecraft had bounced and rolled for several minutes following its initial impact at 11:35 p.m. EST (8:35 p.m. Pacific Standard Time) on January 3.

I Can't Wait For Information To Come Spewing In
I got home last night and watched the celebration ceremony and listened to what the 6-7 people in charge of the project had to say. It wasn't until the last person spoke that revelations of almost every aspect of the landing was revealed...everyone else thanked those within and others that helped in the project.

They knew everything in advance and almost to the second of when it would happen...and everything went as planned AND to the second.

One of the guys put it into perspective when he said how he'd like to thank the propulsion-people, the balloon-people, the hydraulic-people, the optics-people, the rover-people, the solar-power-people, etc., etc., etc., and stated how it was the cumulative success of each individual team that culminated in the ultimate success of this landing, and that if one of the components would've failed, the mission would've failed also.

This mission truely is one giant leap for mankind.

OH YEAH...
It was funny... the celebration ceremony on TV said "LIVE", and when I turned the channel I came to CNN Headline News and the newslady said that the Mars Spirit Rover is expected to land on the planet Mars within the next 2 hours."

Well, I got a kick out of it.

I read that the Rover Spirit bounced and rolled for a mile. Incredible that that thing is still working!!!

In Violin's photo above...it seems like Jesus made it there first.

What Do They Expect To Find
Signs of water...which may mean life once existed on the Red Planet.

The geomorphology of the surface, as we've seen it from above, indicates water once existed and shaped the surface of portions of the panet, and although water/ice is not visually apparent from photos, it may still exist in bulk below the surface...or microscopically in the rocks.

And there's lots of other experiments that'll take place now that we finally got there successfully.

PLOTTING SPIRIT'S COURSE

Remember the name "Sleepy Hollow." In images released on Monday by
scientists working with the Spirit rover on Mars, the newly discovered,
light-colored feature (the first Spirit-site landmark to be given a name)
will likely be the initial objective for the rover when it starts to roll
around next week.

At a press conference on Monday, Mars Exploration Rover principal
investigator Steven W. Squyres (Cornell University) reported "more good
news." The craft is alive and healthy, and so far all its instruments
appear to be in perfect working order....

Whadda ya wanna bet they name one of the rocks 'Ichabod'... or 'Irving'... ?

I still chuckle thinking about the rock they named 'Barnacle Bill' from the Pathfinder mission.

Barnacle Bill?

Jaysus Murphy.
