need a lil help now
My friend's looking to get some hiking boots (for dayhiking and backpacking). I don't know too much about men's boots, so I'm posting this thread. Any helpful hints? Budget is $150.

Also does anyone know anything about the Montrail Torre boots?

you put your left foot in, you take your left out, you do the hokey pokey and then you shake it all around

I have Asolo 520 GTX's and I love them i hiked the Devils path with them right out of the box.
Nobody can really recomend boots for someone elses feet. He needs to go try on every pair in the store.

Just make sure that if he is going to do some backpacking that his boots give him enough support. I made that mistake with a pair of vasque boots that just didn't hold up to the pack weight.

Awesome, thanks for the info. He kinda can't go try on boots though,.. he's stationed in Japan and stuck on a ship, so he's gotta order them. If they don't work, he'll just keep sending them back haha

a little more than $150, but a lotta boot for the buck. fabric and leather is $10 less.

I have a pair of Montrail Torre GTX. The fit is low volume throughout and the heel is narrow width, maybe a B, the toebox being about a D width and roomy. If your foot is shaped like that the boot will probably fit OK. It would be better for me if they were a B width throughout, but these are close enough since there isn't many low volume, narrow width boots out there.

Vasque and Montrail are good brands. There are others. But.. what it all boils down to is trying them on and liking them. Even then, boots have a break-in period, so sometimes it may be hard to tell if they'll do you good when you first try them on. Have your friend try a bunch on and then go from there. It's the only way. :-)

I have a pair of Montrail Torre GTXs too. I like them excepting for how heavy they are. I tend to wear my Montrail trail runners 90% of the time, everywhere. But, I have pretty sturdy ankles. I save the Torres for winter (snow) and deep mud. Montrail makes quality footwear.

I agree Sass. I use my lighter Lowa Tanark's most of the time except for cold or really wet hikes. The Torre's can handle that, but the Tanark's are more of a mild weather, dry conditions boot.

I bought a pair of Merrill Gore-tex boots that I love. They broke in very quickly and fit better than any other pair I own.

When I needed a new pair, I went to REI, told the boot guy my budget (also $150) and what kind of hiking I was planning to do, and then took his recommendation. It worked out great!

Stormbringer, remind me to slap you when I meet you. I have had this song in my head for two hours now, and I am about over it. I'm looking pretty stoopid acting it out, too...since I live alone. Thanks alot! When I meet you, you're gonna think storm!
