Does anybody know what match strikers are made of?? Ive been using those little boxes of waterproof matches to light my stove . I put some matches in a film vial and cut the striker off the box to keep in the vial but the striker is kinda flimsy and it ends up breaking before long.Im wondering what the strikers are made of or if there is another material I can use and where I could find it. I tried a couple peices of sandpaper of diferent grit but it didnt even spark! Any ideas?? Thanx, Streamweaver

Don't Forget Your Board
Every and all type of gritty-surfaced paper can be traced back to the only source of abrasivenissisivity...skateboard griptape.

Naw, they're probably saftey matches so grip tape wouldn't work, but yeah the striker is red phosphorus. Get strike anywhere's if ya can, which btw is becoming almost impossible

so maybe we should stock up on strike anywhere matches.

I bet you'd trigger a terror alert if you tried to buy like 30 boxes of them at wal mart.

Roam Around ,Good idea!Thats what I did except I glued it to a peice of plastic and that kept it from breaking but the surface of the striker wears out fast. Im thinking about getting a striker like the one HOI has in the pic that Stovestomper posted ,the kind that just makes a spark .My clumsy arse usually ends of breaking a few of those wimpy little matchsticks anyway! LOL I cant find strike anywhere matches around here.

I haven't look for strike anywheres in YEARS. If your just lighting alcohol stoves, the sparker should work fine, for fire starter stuff it's a little less reliable, but it will work (specially if ya add a little alky to the starter material)

Yup , I keep a box of matches in my emergency kit so the striker should be ok to start a fire in a pinch. I know where some old hot water heaters are so maybe I can swipe a Piazzo(sp) igniter off of one. Thanks fer the ideas!

now thats a good idea - the piezio (sp?) would be a really good spark, some cigarette lighters use that type ignitor too.
