Goto Trip Page: Ithaca, New York - Gorge And Waterfalls

Gorges and waterfalls
This is an area I visited many years ago and one that has seldom come up in my experience with the NE BPers here. I was originally looking for a BPing trip up there, but in speaking to the powers that be in the area, it appears that car camping is the way to go on this one. So, before you poo-poo it, please look at the potential here. The trips page now has desrciptions of two parks up there that we will choose from as to our base camp. There are several trails to cover (some along the gorges) and these can be accomplished as day trips. I think that I will make this at least a three nighter. So, if interested, please sign up as i would like to get reservations in as fast as possible, as well as deciding on the dates...

Oh yeah. I think Geobeet will be chamoing at the bit (not you, Bitpusher) to get at me. I just have to find the judges and send the 'boys' out to have a little talk with them...

Are you sure that you guys won't get all your stuff sopping wet again just so you can sleep in a hotel while the rest of us car campers get mosquito-bitten margherita hangovers? Enquiring minds ... , you know?

In other news, I think I'll sign up as a maybe on this trip. Mapquest says it's a 16 hour drive, which in my youth I could do without breaking a sweat. The route goes right through Columbus, so if someone from there wanted to go, I could stop and pick them up. But I wouldn't count on me coming, since I haven't discussed vacation plans for this summer with my wife yet.

Ithaca is in or near the Finger Lake region with it's zillions of wineries (free wine tasting), and Watkins Glen which is a nice walk through a gorge of waterfalls.

Exactly, Lyndy. On the trip page, I outlined some of the other gorges and waterfall attractions. This is going to be a great one.

Bit, we'd love to see ya for this. Dub is near Columbus. He's a maybe. Haven't heard back from the other Ohio folks yet...

My route goes straight thru Nashville, Cincinnati, Louisville, Columbus, and Buffalo, and near Cleveland, Akron, and Rochester, so by the time I get there, my truck could look like this:

My husband and I went car camping after the free wine tasting. It was fun, except for the freight train coming through camp at 2AM.

Six feet long? Is that stretched out or standing on four legs? Good grief!

Yes Mapleleaf, but I didn't get my money back. Slimy campground guide publishers! Better to just use the internet.

I'm going to check the Terms of Participation. I can't believe that Matt allows car camping trips advertised on a backpacking forum.

You go into one bar and they have a deer a$$ mounted to the wall and the Down-Staters black list a place.

BTW – I put myself down as a maybe for this trip out West.

How long is it for you, Nigal. I was actually thinking this would be better for you than something like the Daks, being that Ithaca is further west. then again, I don't know how long it is from Ohio...

I saw that, Zac. This is going to be a lot of fun. I plan on using a vacation day or two and make this an extended weekend...
