It's actually "0" on the thermometer at 1700' & I imagine at least 10 degrees cooler on Hunter & lowered more by wind factor.

Next week its supposed to hover around 30

Funny, those are the temps right now in Metro Detroit. No mountains necessary. :)

Work has me heading to AK Sunday. The current temperature is 0, windchill -27. I hope this southern boy can survive it. Actually, I think the 4 hours of daylight and driving on a slab of ice is what is going to do me in.

Supposed to warm up next week to 25-30 above. Right now EVERTHING is ice encrusted right to the top of hundred foot trees. Kinda pretty when the sun shines thru it. Sparkles. Been that way for a few days, which is rare.

If it stays that way,I'd bring fire starter as it is hard to light campfires with everthing encased in ice.

7 below right now in Saranac Lake, with a low tonight of 33 below. I hope Lumberzac doesn't ask me to go up there for a dayhike tomorrow.

Brrrrrr!! At my house it’s currently 1 degree. Should be well below zero tonight and a high of 9 tomorrow.

I could test some cold weather gear out in the yard tonight. LOL

Our high today was -2, and it's -14 here right now, -24 with the wind chill. We've had minus 20-30 during the day with the wind chill and tomorrow will be the same.

The snow is really pretty all frozen like it is - glazed and shiny, and cool with the moon reflecting on it.

When I came home tonight, a herd crossed the road just before my driveway. Nothing to do with snow or cold or hiking, but it was cool.

It's 0 here now and they expect -4 tonight. The wind isn't bad though. When the wind starts and it's below 0 it's pretty much time to hide in a tent, unless you're hiking.

-4 is a tad nippy but around here we're pretty happy if it's above -20 when we have to go to work..I try to not think about windwhill unless it gets to -35..now that I have an electric car starter (I love my SO) I don't care la-dee-dah;)

We broke a record at -6 this morning. I was out in my yard testing parkas last night. I modified a TNF goose down parka so I wanted to see how much it was improved. I put it up against a Golite Six month night parka and a Goretex quallofil parka. The temp was -2 with windchills of -18 at the time. The most noticeable thing was that a parka that doesn't have a hood is at a disadvantage to one that does. In these temps a vapor barrier shirt makes a dramatic boost in warmth to anything you've got on for only a few ounces more. The gore tex shell on one coat helped a lot in the wind, but adds weight. With 15 lbs. less body fat than I had last winter I need another layer to stay as warm and that was pretty noticeable. I want to make my own parka so I learned a few things last night that will help when I decide what to use for materials and some other details.

What's the matter with you people? It's not nearly that cold in my freezer, <G>

My warmest s-bag is only rated to 15°, but the VBL really helps if the temps drop any further.

Speaking of parkas... I have a Feathered Friends Volant jacket I really like, but I think I'm loosing loft in the shoulders. Once it warms up in the Spring I'm thinking of sending it back to them for some more 'stuffing'.
Tilt

1/10/04

Tilt, that's one of the things I've learned in testing the jackets. They really need to beefed up in the shoulders because just the weight of the jacket can compress the loft and make a cold spot. Also all the body heat rises and if it doesn't get trapped really well in the shoulders it won't accumulate in the jacket. That's one of the modifications I made to TNF parka was to beef up the shoulder area and it seems to have worked.

For Sure. I had a TNF parka years ago that lost loft in the shoulders completely. I finally stuck some oval-shaped pieces of closed cell foam in it to compensate....

Translating into Fahrenheit will probably give me brain cramps, but here goes: right now it's down to -18°F from a high of -15°F outside my school with fierce winds. It will be going down to -22°F to-night with a wind chill factor of -45°F.

Canadians love to talk about these things to you guys down there - a sort of perverse pride to cheer ourselves up, I guess.

The good news is that my pipes weren't frozen this morning and I hope I'll still have running water when I get home after our after-school (indoor) rugby training. I didn't have time to go home and run the water at lunch.

We heard about the snow up north. Nothing down here in Southern Maine.....

Gotta check if Big Squaw ski mountain got any.

We went out yesterday, and I thought it was 30 degrees out. It never made it above 10. The winter weather aclimatization is setting in.

I know what you mean, monkeyboy. This morning it was about 10 degrees out and the wind was blowing a bit. Seemed like it was fairly warm. Wait until late Friday and Saturday. It's supposed to get a little chilly. Then again...it's January.
