Hey Evergreen! Birch and I were hoping to make it up there a few years ago, but cancelled the trip due to being newly pregnant and overanxious (stupid us, lol). BUT, we did find loads of great sites online at the time. Unfortunately we don't have them bookmarked on this PC. Do and search and you'll find loads. Have fun and write a trip report!

Ps, it's nice to see you!!! Come back more often.

While you're around Cape Breton, walk by Pema Chodron's retreat center and tell me what you think of it. I'm thinking of spending some time there.
Congratulations on the trip. I can't wait to hear what you think of that part of the world.

I went to NS 4 years ago on business. Didn't backpack, but did sightsee and dayhike. It was beautiful! You gotta see Peggy's Cove and the tides at the Bay of Fundy.
I have a Hiking Nove Scotia I'd be happy to lend you.

In summer of '80 I motored north along the western coast on the Cabot Trail.

We got to the town of Cheticamp after dodging rain all day.
There we sat for three days as the rain hammered on.
Being on two-wheelers we stayed.
A couple of local girls hung out with us at the laundromat playing cards.
We stayed at the home of one of the girls and her mom who fed us like sons.
Not bad for a couple of mooks on motorcycles from maryland.

This town turns out to be the home town of the dad of a childhood friend.
Cheticamp and vicinity was the only part of Cape Breton that was not ethnically cleansed of "Acajuns" in 1755.

When the sun finally showed we rode north across the Highlands.
We froze our asses off in the cool air.
The views of the Gulf Of Saint Lawrence with its very blue water are incredible.

At Pleasant Bay we turned off the Cabot Trail and followed the coast road about three miles to the village of Red River, where we stocked up on food.
Beyond Bucks Cove the road became a trail.
We went past a hermit's cabin to where the Yamaha 650's could go no further.

There we camped on the edge of 80-100 foot cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.
From the cliffs we could just make out a group of islands about 40 miles out to the northwest.

The beach below is made up of rounded rocks about the size of bowling balls give or take.
We could hear them clacking in the surf at night.

During the three days of sun there were hundreds of gold finches flitting about working the small trees and bushes.

During the third night there I woke to the sound of rain on the tent.
The rain was intermittent and chased us back to Cheticamp where we stayed one more night and said our goodbyes to the girls and our new "mom".

Riding back down Cape Breton we were harrased by rain until we crossed the Canso Causway to the mainland.
We had not encountered rain until crossing onto Cape Breton and the rain left us alone once we left.

Our next bout with rain would not come until we reached Ontario..............

I love Nova Scotia. I never made it up to Cape Breton Island, but I loved Keijimakujic (I'm sure I mispelled that) park. I also loved the Digby sound, Digby neck and the Acadian people I met. There is something magical about the tides in the Bay of Fundy.

I worked in Nova Scotia for one magical summer and have been back to visit.

I drove to Nova Scotia once from Montreal, up along the River via Quebec city and the Gaspe Penninsula - that is one beautiful drive.

Halifax= Anne Muray's hometown, really it's Springhill. If your a fan you should check out the museum in her honor.

Hi evergreen. My folks spent the last two years travelling across Canada, and the place they most want to return to is Newfoundland. The people are the friendliest in Canada, lots of wildlife (many moose!), and amazing scenery. If not for the snow, they probably would still be in Gros Morne nat park.

don't forget your rubbers
If you do get to the Bay of Fundy, make sure you walk down into the tidal flats. That was the most fun I had on our family trip to N.S./ N.B. (I was twelve) First time at the ocean, and surprise---a big mud pie!
