stikmon, I challenge you to LOTR trivia. ..View Messages“How about an LOTR trivia contest, books only, mano a mano, steel cage match. Rules: No movies, no "The Hobbit", no "Silmarillion". (Makes it too complicated and hard to judge) We will be online together, correct answer to be posted within five minutes of the question. Be advised, I fight dirty! For example, everyone knows the gates of Mordor are called The Morannon, and the flanking towers are called The Towers of the Teeth. But can you name each tower? Bwahahaha. (Narchost and Carchost). All answers to be verified by the book after the contest is over. Whaddaya say?” 10:46:36 PM 1/12/04 “watchout Slug! he has the Ring!” 10:47:54 PM 1/12/04 “yea,.. he acts it out as well lol” 10:56:33 PM 1/12/04 “go easy on him...he's havin' Big Bend withdrawls” 10:59:59 PM 1/12/04 “he knows i got nuttin but luv for him.” 11:00:23 PM 1/12/04 “luv??light utility vechile?/: )” 11:02:04 PM 1/12/04 “Hey, I just like a good contest. If he can beat me, then he's the better man as far as LOTR trivia. But I have a perfect memory for useless trivia, and I've read the trilogy at least 20 times over 30 years. Never studied it for trivia contests or anything weird like that! LOL. (Funny how I can't remember important things, though)” 11:03:26 PM 1/12/04 “good gravy! Not another dilusional LOTR fan! These two could drone on for hours I bet. I'm taking bets...but the third reply back and forth they will be talking to each other in elvish. LOL!” 11:21:35 PM 1/12/04 “Gilthoniel a elbereth, silvran prenna miriel. That means "Screw you Nigal and the horse you rode in on!" LOL. (just kidding Nigal!)” 11:39:02 PM 1/12/04 “Screw you and the elf that saddled you up! No problem Slugo! 8P” 12:15:52 AM 1/13/04 “One of those rare circumstances where the winner is actually the loser. Sorta like winning a beauty pageant for Ms. Autopsy 2004. (I think that was a Tales of the Crypt episode).” 2:21:21 AM 1/13/04 “i thought it was the gate not gates of mordor?” 11:32:48 AM 1/13/04 “Nope, gates. The Morannon. Plural. Do not question the wisdon of Saruman, I mean Slugman. lol” 12:51:59 PM 1/13/04 “Well, I guess you can question my wisdom a little. A quick re-reading of the entire trilogy has pointed out the fact that the gate of Mordor is made up of three doors. They are called Left, Middle, and Right. LOL. So, maybe I won't do so well in the steel cage match.” 1:00:42 PM 1/13/04 I gotta throw this out “Grond is the name of the battering ram used to smash the gates of Gondor. Where did the name come from and where did it get its shape and the reason for the fire?” 1:46:32 PM 1/13/04 “Maybe Slugman is to Stikmon as Gollum is to Smeagal and Slugmam is really having a trivia contest with himself. We knows the answer, don't we, precious?” 1:53:40 PM 1/13/04 “Grond, named after The Hammer of the Underworld. It has a hidious head, made of black steel, in the shape of a ravening wolf. No fire would catch upon it.” 1:56:55 PM 1/13/04 “Grond was the name of the mace that Morkov used to kill one of the high princes of the Noldor. I'm guessing the wolfs's head. The fire represents the great fire of Beleriand or Morkov's most malignant were wolf. This creature bit off the hand of Beren and swallowed a silmaril. The creature was in such agony and lit up by the gem that it rampaged through the country side.” 2:03:25 PM 1/13/04 “Hey, I said no Silmarillion! I know it pretty well, but I don't have a copy handy for quick look-ups.” 2:07:29 PM 1/13/04 QUICK LOOK UPS... “IF Y oops...caps on...it was MELKOR or in the Valanese form Morgoth Bauglir...where did Morkov come from...both of you are disqualified...I win. sheesh amatuers!!! and Grond was not named "after the hammer of the underworld"...it WAS the name of the the Hammer of the Underworld. just because you read it many times, doesn't make a scholar be. To live the world of Tolkien, one must truely SEE!!! go away! I need not prove my knowledge to you, nor anyone else.” 2:19:13 PM 1/13/04 “What caused Fangorn forest to grow evil?” 2:29:47 PM 1/13/04 “Wait just a sec there, stikmon. He said "Morkov", not me. I was just too polite to correct him, as it wasn't germain to the question. Also, you are DQ'd for your obvious blunder in that last post. The Hammer of the Underworld was a weapon of Morgoth's, NOT the battering ram used to knock down the gates of Minas Tirith. The battering ram used to knock down the gates WAS simply named for the ancient weapon of Morgoth's. Look it up! Gotcha!” 2:31:31 PM 1/13/04 “His name is MELKOR!! his nickname Morgoth came from some chit talking Elf!!!!!” 2:34:01 PM 1/13/04 “OH and sticky has been dethroned as #1 Ring Geek! "NO SOUP FOR YOU!" ”2:38:23 PM 1/13/04 “"Morgoth I name thee" said Feanor.” 2:40:03 PM 1/13/04 “Feanor started swearing and Melkor dropped a big poopy pile on him and is friends!” 2:45:44 PM 1/13/04 “Here, quaff this flagon of mulligatawny!” 2:46:38 PM 1/13/04 “Sluuurp!” 2:47:06 PM 1/13/04 “Better yes. Stickmon knows why Fangorn went bad but won't say.” 2:51:07 PM 1/13/04 Times up! “The shade of Morgoth returning to middle earth!” 2:58:35 PM 1/13/04 Gotta Go! “I'm protesting the evil mayor (mumbles) menino tonight in Beantown.” 3:10:12 PM 1/13/04 dolt... “i never said that the battering ram was named Grond...and I didn't state that Grond was a weapon of Morgoth. what I said was that the Hammer of the Underworld was named Grond...sheesh...read and comprehend True...Morgoth Bauglir was the name given to Melkor after Melkor stole the silmarils from Feanor, who was, for a very short time the High King of the Noldor. The language used was that of the Valar and of the Noldorin. Morgoth meaning "Black enemy" and Bauglir meaning "the constrainer". As Morgoth strove to enslave the elves and all middleearth. So, I stand vindicated. and Fangorn never "grew evil" it grew wild. It became that way, when there were less and less Ents to control the Hourons. There were less and less Ents, cause during a migrtation, the Ent Wives became lost on the road. NEXT!!! you discuss what you like, amongst yourselves, I will correct the errors... A challenge game is so mundain. I need not put up the efforts to showboat my knowledge. It is well known across the realm, that I am worthy of the challenge...you, Slubman, are an upstart...a whelp that needs his ears boxed a bit. continue to strole down the road you have chosen, and your doom will be brought upon by yourself. I shall remain as I am...STIKMON” 3:10:57 PM 1/13/04 My doom is before me. “Better than a dolt,I am a DOLTARD. I usually admit that under torture. It was the shade of Sauron that corrupted Fangorn and befuddled the Ents.” 3:29:35 PM 1/13/04 “A member of the Doltari. Those who serve and maintain taverns.” 3:40:06 PM 1/13/04 Do you even read at all? “Sorry, stikmon, but you are still wrong. elfskin2 asked me where the name of the battering ram came from. I answered that it was named after the Hammer of the Underworld. This answer was PERFECTLY correct. You then stated I was incorrect. That makes you wrong for saying I was wrong. I read your post thouroughly and correctly, but you had not read his question and my answer correctly, so it is you who should "read and comprehend". If this is the quality of the competition I face, it will be no challenge at all! Sheesh, another non-reader who thinks he can compete with me! You are a no-hoper.” 3:56:38 PM 1/13/04 “now now boys.... do we have to separate you? unless bickering is your way of having fun, I'll get chili and marmot to referee.” 3:58:22 PM 1/13/04 I can find no reference to that... “other than the "shade of Sauron" corrupted and befuddled everything and everyone in middle earth. such was the length of the arm of Sauron. But, Fangorn was never inherently Evil...only dark and old, very old. The Ents were made at the prayer of the Yavanna (she who is thought to be Goldberry) to be shepards of the trees and proctectors of the forest. Fangorn was the eldest. and therefore the forest took his name, or he took the name of the forest...only one being knows, and he's not talking.” 4:02:40 PM 1/13/04 ok, fine...I see the reference point...and “conceede that you were making metaphoric reference....regarding the grond thing...my last post in regards to fangorn being evil. its hard to do this inbetween calls and reports. and I don't have reference materials here, so, its all in my memory. If you have reference materials, then shame on you.” 4:10:31 PM 1/13/04 “I meant my jabs in the spirit of playful teasing. Who dares to say I was bickering? It's GO time, baby! Besides, this is just the warm-up. I was hoping for a situation where I would ask stikmon questions, and he would ask me questions, not elfskin2 tossing out general questions of questionable quality. Besides, why is it my problem if elfskin2 makes a mistake in his question? Shouldn't I be judged on my answers, not HIS questions? Since he asked about the battering ram, that was the context for my answer. Stikmon's saying that "Grond was not named after the hammer, it was the hammer" is INCORRECT in this context. There are two "Gronds", the original hammer, and then thousands of years later, a battering ram. The battering ram, the subject of the question, was indeed named after the hammer. Stikmon then said this was wrong, that grond wasn't named for the hammer, it was the hammer. Wrong "Grond", stikmon. Please try to keep up and look at the question before judging my answer.” 4:14:41 PM 1/13/04 Whatnever... “my love of the histories is well known, as am I. Who are you to come and start blathering and pointing fingers? If you want to play at games, go ahead...you play your style, I'll play mine...sheesh I have nothing to prove as far as my knowledge goes.” 4:23:03 PM 1/13/04 stikmon- I wasn't trying to slam you! “I, too, have a problem: while I am writing a post, five other posts happen and I am then posting something totally out of sequence and no longer applicable. I must remember to hit "Refresh" more often. Plus, we both are "suffering" from elfskin2's well-meaning but vague and inaccurate questions. I agree with you that Fangorn was not evil, just dangerous and unfriendly. Treebeard was the keeper of Fangorn, and he was not evil. Ents killed orcs, and that was decidedly not evil. I will answer any question you post using just memory alone, I promise. Afterwords, we will use the books to determine correct and incorrect responses. It's all just good, clean fun to me, I swear.” 4:23:06 PM 1/13/04 “stikmon - I'm posting so you'll see this now instead of 100 posts later over on Savage Gulf. You have mail and your questions have been answered for the 2nd time. Calling the Rangers repeatedly is what caused this mess. Back to the previously scheduled bickering.” 4:53:17 PM 1/13/04 We're cool! “Being a newbie here, it is hard for me to tell when people are serious and when they are being funny. I was assuming stikmon to be engaging in banter, not bickering, and I tried to respond in the same manner. I am cool with you stikmon, and I hope you're cool with me. I just wanted a little fun is all.” 4:59:18 PM 1/13/04 “wait i got one its a tuffy who was the hobbit that threw the ring into mt dooom?” 5:00:29 PM 1/13/04 “LMFAO Nigal!!!!!!!!!!! 8)” 5:03:21 PM 1/13/04 “Never call the Rangers unless you mean business. Stikmon should know better.” 5:06:08 PM 1/13/04 “wait, heres another one: gandalf is: a. a wizard b. a jedi c. a reality-tv host d. our risen lord and saviour” 5:08:25 PM 1/13/04 “Has anyone read "Bored of the Rings" by the Harvard Lampoon?(forebear of National Lampoon). It is a laugh riot, though it was written 40 years ago, so some jokes are out of date. But once you meet Goodgulf, Frito, Spam, Stomper, Moxie and Pepsi, Goddam, Sorhed, Serutan, Legolam, Gimlet and all the rest, you'll be hooked!” 5:12:53 PM 1/13/04 slanderous slurrs... “you continue to prove that you are not worthy of receiving the Word of Illuvatar. you are hearby banished to the woods and to marry the daughter of Ghan Buri Gan Gan.” 12:42:51 AM 1/14/04 “Not that, oh please! She's as pot-bellied as a franklin stove! I will heed the words of Eru Illuvatar, and I will listen to the music of the Ainur. The Valar shall be my lords, and my gaze shall be turned oft to the west, where the Valar live in peace and beauty amidst the light of the Two Trees, Telperion and Laurelin, light captured from the Silmaril Beren took from the crown of Morgoth, and placed in the vessels of the sun and moon.” 1:14:19 AM 1/14/04
