And here I thought the only hazzard of the colored Nalgeens was the risk of being thought to be gay!

That article had a link to the original research article. According to the original article: "Bisphenol A (BPA) is the monomer that is polymerized to manufacture polycarbonate plastic products and resins, such as those used to line cans containing food and beverages and those found in dental sealants."

In other words, it hasn't got anything to do with the dye used to color Nalgene bottles. That means the colorless ones have this same problem. And so do canned foods (apparently).

I'm not trying to be an alarmist. I just don't think we should be lulled into a false sense of security just because the person writing the news article chose to focus on what's most popular in a Nalgene bottle.

I also like to keep in mind when reading this kind of thing that while the genetic controls are similar amongst mammals, there are some important differences. Mice lack some very important protective cellular mechanisms for their DNA that longer lived mammals have. Therefore, their DNA is a lot more easily damaged than human DNA. It's really not always appropriate to generalize something that happens in mice to apply to humans.

I'll need a lot more information before I'll be more than mildly concerned about this.

A salesman at REI tried unsuccessfully to buy one of the new colors of Nalgene bottles. I said I had plenty of them. He replied by wondering if I wouldn't like one of the new colors. I asked if people suddenly started losing their Nalgene bottles and that is why they needed to make them in bright colors. I could now see where the yellow one would be handy for identifying a pee bottle.

Leaching of BPA from the material was greatly accelerated by cleaning it with a harsh, alkaline detergent.

Hello people, now how many people do that, i know for me my bottles have so many stickers on them the dishwasher is out and i really only wash them when the mold starts growing, i know a lot of people like this, i also know my bottles are light and have servied drops off 75 foot clifs so until they tell me that the water is removing the cemicals and i;m drinking them then maybe i;ll believe but untill then i won;t wash my bottles in something that might be better suited to run my head lamp then wash my water bottle

Yeah, but that merely accelerates it. You don't have to wash it in alkaline to get the toxic effects.

Interesting article, thanks for posting.

Wow that's interesting. The way I look at it, everything is bad for you and everything will kill you...someone always finds a study to show that your computer keyboard keys are transferring some kind of cancer causing agent to your hands or some other threat. I just say live on.

Hey Ultrapecker, long time no post!

I really have wonder about their statements though. THe mice lived in lexan cages with lexan feed bowls 24/7. How often do most of us use lexan in our homes and as utensils? Which type of lab mice are we talking about; your standard lab rodent, or the heavily genetically modified ones that mimic the human immune system and go for over $10 grand each?

LHC, I don't think there are clear Lexan bottles, just the "smoke" color. Besides, the BPA is in all Lexan, clear or colored. The article just capitalized on the colored Nalgenes being popular. I can say "colored" in this context, can't I?

I read on this forum awhile back that Gatorade bottles (and other brands) detoriate too, and leak chems into the water also. I use those bottles on my mt. bike.....sick of losing water bottles, and don't need to remove them when parked in the city.

LOL @ skiracer.

I wonder how many people in this world know the difference between clear and colorless besides chemists? They (Nalgene lexan bottles) are all clear. And I did see some colorless ones at REI last weekend. They were 34 oz./1000mL and in a really cool concave shape. Just right for the hand and yet with a wide, tip-resistant bottom. I wish there were something wrong with the lexan bottles I have so I can justify replacing them...

Just wait a few more weeks...I'm sure there'll be a study published proving that colored nalgene bottles leak hormones that cause natural penile enhancement.

You can probably dig up dirt on just about anything if you look hard enough. How many people smoke cigerettes, drink booze, over eat, don't exercise and a host of other bad health habits that will far outweigh drinking from a lexan bottle on a hiking trip. I think far more people will get sick from bad habits than plastic bottles. The last scare was teflon so what will it be a few months from now?

Thank you richb, that's one of my pet peeves. We had a bit of a minor radiation scare here at the lab once (awhile ago) when an environmental sample came in at a radiation level higher than we are equiped to handle at these facilities. One of the front desk jockeys who had handled it without gloves on (something you should never do anyway) declared loudly that she was concerned for her health. She then went for a smoke break. It's a little hard to take that kind of complaint seriously.

People are living longer today than they ever did with chemicals all around us. So many people pump their own gas in the car and benzene fumes are well known to be a cause of leukemia and it's on the rise since the introduction of lead free gas. That probably has more risk of illness than plastic bottles and yet you don't hear of many people crying about that.
