REI Dividends

“I used my dividend. It was $114 and they had a 20% coupon for the REI Outlet, so I bought a lightweight gore-tex rain jacket by Moonstone. This will replace my precip jacket on backpacking trip. The precip is more like a water-resistant jacket than a waterproof jacke, but it will do for day hikes.”

“Got my check for $29 and change last night, plus the 20 percent coupon. Funny thing was, I stopped in at REI on the way home and bought up $92 in gear. Oh well, it will get put to good use since I need wicking tee shirts.”

Those new ProLite Thermorest pads are mighty tempting.......
But which one? The 3 or 4?
If I didn't already have 3/4 lenght Ultralite and Guide models I would just get both. ;-)”

“I HAD to run out to REI today after I rec'd my notice. I don't NEED anything, but I am kinda trying to lower my pack weight. Problem is, the stuff I want most isn't at REI, probably a Western Mountaineering bag, and a ultra-lite pack. The closest they had was the Gregory Z pack, actually looked pretty darn nice, but I already have an older Kelty Morraine that I've only used for day-trips, but could be a week-ender. Hard to justify blowing my rebate just to save 6 oz.”

“Wanderer: If you want a good UL pack I'd suggest picking one of the Equinox Katahdin pack from Binks or one of hte Osprey Aether packs from backcountrygear. I own both and I'm having a hard time deciding which one I like better. The Equinox is over 8oz lighter so I'm tempted to lean towards it.”

I don't like the fact you only get an 8% dividend if you use you check card, but if you write a check you get the full 10%..that makes no sense to me”

“Possibly a lower fee for them to cash the check? I know if you use your card as debit it costs them $0.09, but as credit (signature) it costs $1.50.

Which, BTW, is why all the credit card companies run promotions to win vacations, etc. - and require you to make your purchases with a signature to be entered. They make far more money that way.”

“I do not like getting only 8 percent using a check card either. I heard the policy was to discourage credit spending, but a check card is not credit. The card they issue yields a 10 percent return and is a credit card.

It would make sense if there's a $1.50 fee for processing a credit card purchase, but they do not offer debit card purchasing.

Maybe I need to tote my checkbook along next time.”

“LOL, I've told my wife and other family members to use my account when making purchases so I get the credit. Clerk can look up the account with the phone number, which my family (better) know.”

“If you really want to beat the system and piss REI off, use your credit card to purchace a gift card, then use your gift card to purchace the merchandce. That way you still get your 10% back. I'm like Lumberzac, I try to give the little man most of my money.”

You don't beat the system, you end up with the same restrictions when buying from the gift card as you would paying with cash, and no 10% earned purchasing the gift card.”

“you get 1% on ALL purchases using the REI gift card. I generally spend 10-15k a year on my credit card and pay it off each month. this way I automatically will get 100-150 dollars in dividend. I pay my electric bill with my rei credit card, my phone bill, gas for truck, walmart...EVERYTHING!!! Purchases in REI with the card get 10%, and no, why should purchasing a gift card count...gift cards aren't inventoriable merchandise...its not a purchase until merchandise is purchased.

I expect to get a 200-250 rebate this year...gonna buy the garmin topo software for my etex and who know what else.”

I thought I read that it gets figured in with the dividends from REI purchases and then I get one dividend check.

“No, it doesn't roll over. You have to use it by December 31 of the same year it was issued or you lose it.

G00SE and I also have the REI card and make cash purchases at REI besides. We just get one dividend check each year.

Stikmon has the right idea. We also use the REI card for our purchases at the scratch-n-dent sales. One percent is better than nothing!

We're combining our dividend with a gift card to get this GPS this year. Sometimes it pays off!

“correct. it combines both aspects of the game. REI internal purchases are combined with the REI credit card purchases. On the monthly statement from the credit card, you can monitor your points that are earned via the card. but there is no way to track the store purchases without keeping track yourself.”

“my techs have that gps unit here in my office, it EATS batteries. the color display makes the thing work overtime.

I have the etrex vista and ran from here to big bend texas on only 2 sets of batteries. mine has 34 meg of downloadable storage space.”
