“How does the dividend work? I've never purchased anything from REI. It sounds like you get a hefty percentage back to be able to make the kind of purchases that folks are talking about. If I spent $300 at REI what kind of dividend would I get?

it depends on what form of transaction you choose for the purchase.

I think it goes something like: Pay cash, use REI card = 10% of non-sale items.

Use debt card, or credit card from another institution = 8% of non-sale items.”

“...well there are a lot of credit cards that do cash back or airline miles or the like. i have tons of airline mines with my job... more than I can spend. I have a pile of Marriott points, etc. Cash back is always good but the REI dividend is better because I can spend it on gear with zero feedback from the spousal authority. I don't think that CC is much better than any other deal out there (other than for REI purchases perhaps) but it gives me the cash back in a way that is easiest for me to use.

Selfish, yes, but then I have to turn the nut every month to pay the thing off...

“that amex points thing is a total scam, esp because you have to pay to play. my visa card is free (no annual fee, i pay it off every month, etc) and I get real money back at the end of the year. i hate amex and will never have one of their cards for personal use. it is a company that is not competitive and i don't think they deserves to exist in the consumer credit card market.”

If ya don't mind me asking mate...by what authority do have to make a statement like this? Like a good friend says to me all the time....what this mean? I don't get it. Deserves? Personally, I was a big time AMEX user....paid my $55 annual fee and would get at least a free roundtrip ticket or 2 a year. Here's what I think your missing. Being i'm a Consultant in the Payments Industry, with regards to this, it comes down to usage. It sounds like you didn't use the AMEX card enough to justify the annual fee. I was spending nearly $2k a month and in the end the cost of the program represents a relatively small percentage. Nowadays, i'm no longer an AMEX geek....i've hopped onto the REI bandwagon....its nice getting a $200-$300 check from them to spend on gear......just my $.02......”

“..it means that in the consumer credit market they don't have a competitive offer to other companies. The term "deserve to exist" means that I hope the market grinds them into the dust. The AMEX points scam used to cost $75/year ON TOP of the $55 fee. They offered it, IMO, to snag all the corporate people that have AMEX cards that don't have to pay the $55 fee but want to get points for their business expenses. Companies had to crack down on this a while ago because AMEX would cut a deal with a company to use AMEX for employee expenses and the employees would go out and charge their business expenses on their Mileage Plus Visa or some such because the deal was clearly better.

Hey, if the AMEX thing is such a great deal why then do you now use the REI Visa like me? Answer: I got a $451 credit good at REI this year. Money talks and it's all green.”
