And PLEASE Feel Free To Chime In Capn Bobo
Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for alcohol-laced warm drinks for cold-weather camping, and if you'd share the recipe.

Why I'm wondering is that Capn Bobo made some preeetty tasty drinks on his stove during the Santanoni trip and since then I wished I'd've taken better notes on the concoctions. Been thinking of doing the same for Hunter Mtn but I don't have ANY ideas.

Well?

Buddur, Bobo's signature drink is TnT. Wild Turkey 101 with Crystal light powdered tea mix.
In the winter he heats it up on the stove.
I was thinking about bringing that or pepermint scnapps and hot cocoa.

Hot Whiskey

Whiskey of your choice (tho' Irish is traditional)
tsp sugar
hot water
twist of lemon

Boil enough water to fill mug twice. Fill mug with water to warm it initially. After a few moments, dump the water and add whiskey and sugar. Stir. Rim the mug with the lemon twist then drop it into the whiskey & sugar. Fill with more hot water. Stir... and Enjoy!

(It's great for headcolds, too)

to serve, put a generous tablespoon of batter in each mug along with 1 1/2 ounces (whatnever!) of rum and fill with boiling water
stir until batter is dissolved
a cinnamon stick can be added to each mug.

From June Russell's Health Facts...

Cold Weather

Alcohol is a depressant, can slow the heart and also hasten the ill effects of cold body temperatures.
{Senior Weather Busters Fact Sheet}

To keep sinuses clear in winter it is suggested that you avoid alcohol, which can cause congestion and dehydration, making mucus thicker.
{Parade magazine, Feb. 1992}

Stay away from alcohol if you will be exposed to the cold. Alcohol dilates peripheral blood vessels near the surface of the body, and so steals crucial warmth from internal organs. Although alcohol seems to warm the gullet, the end result can be to pull the heat out and accelerate the problem of hypothermia. Also alcohol interferes with the good judgment that might otherwise persuade one to come in from the cold.
{Rick Weiss, Washington Post Health, Feb. 1995}

Do not drink alcohol or caffeine: they contribute to dehydration.
{“Stay Cool, healthy during periods of intense heat,” HealthCentral.com -7/23/00}

Avoid alcohol and caffeine when possible since they both drain you of more fluid than you take in by drinking them.
{Health Sciences Institute newsletter, August 2000}

An individual will fatigue faster in cold weather, and your body works harder just to keep you warm. Drinking water in cold weather before and after exercise is even more critical in cold temperatures. In cold weather, your body loses moisture not just from sweating, but from breathing, when you use moisture to heat the cold air. Cold winds also foster dehydration and when you are tired, your body has less energy to handle the stress of producing extra heat (no mention of alcohol’s negative effects).
{“Feel the Freezer Burn!" - Washington Post Health, Jan 16, 2001, by Heidi Splete}

*Author’s comment: If a person drinks the eight glasses of pure water recommended each day, there will be little room for alcoholic beverages. Those who drink alcohol need to drink additional water because alcohol dehydrates the body.

Hot buttered rum. Yeah. But I'm not hauling ice cream on a hike to make it, sooo:
Harvey's hot buttered rum batter, mixed with Baccardi 151! The 151 saves 1/2 your alcohol weight.

Hot chocolate and homemeade kahlua on snowshoe "dayhikes". Yummy.

All of the above plus Baileys and coffee. Hot chocolate and peppermint schnaps (already listed?) But please not all at the same time.

Oh and Gem you can make gluhwein by adding mulling spices and orange slices to a rich full bodied red. It's never as good as from the corner vendor at the Kristkindlemarkt though eh?

Tilt, your recipe for whiskey is basically what my ENT doc gave me as his prescription for my nagging cough, although he replaced the sugar with honey and didn't go into the preparation steps in such detail. He said it was as good or better for you than any of the over-the-counter cough syrups. That's my kind of doc.

lumberzac, I'm not drunk, nor A drunk, and at the moment I don't have a cold. What I do have is a "hypersensitivity" such that various environmental aspects can trigger an irritating hack, such as dry air, moving from cold air to hot or vice versa, smoke, etc. And, no, I don't treat it with whiskey at every little cough nor at work. But in the right setting, should my throat be giving me fits, a little Famous Grouse, honey and lemon is more pleasant as a treatment than Robitussen.

Winter Sipping
Hot Crystal-lite lemonade with rum or brandy

Korbel Brandy, heat the flask in boiling water and pass it around during the evening bull session.
I take my flask to bed with me to keep it warm.

Tea and Brandy (I like chamomille) before bed.
