I have been trying to find more of these types of lamps on the internet and have had no luck. I don't want the short one rock "Riverstone" Lamp. I want something like this. ![]() Anyone know of maybe a unique store near them that may carry something like this? Anyone want to try to make one? (Need industrial drill). Anyone got a better internet than me?” 7:55:05 PM 1/15/04 “Anyone gonna read this thread? Where are all the do-it-yourselfers and artists here? Surely there are more than just hikers here, heh?” 8:04:17 PM 1/15/04 “Wasn't Buddhur the one that did those really cool pictures?? I bet he could tell you where to get cool looking rocks.” 8:06:10 PM 1/15/04 Cairn-Lamp “Mmmmm...I collect rocks with holes in them but that is ridickolos. You'd need a diamond-tipped bit and a water-cooling system to drill the holes in the rocks. It'd be pretty hard to make if you didn't have the right equipment (long pause as I headbang to the beginning of War Pigs but pretty easy if you did. Sure is neat though.” 8:08:08 PM 1/15/04 “Make plaster rocks, then you can drill them and paint them whatever colors you want. Perhaps that would be cheating, though... Or if you know someone who does pottery, you could make pre-holed rocks.” 8:11:15 PM 1/15/04 “Thanks, guys. I am starting to feel no hope. Guess I should set aside some moolah from Uncle Sam when he pays me.” 8:14:07 PM 1/15/04 Listen To The Man “Kick ass idea, Pheadrus.” 8:15:51 PM 1/15/04 8:20:22 PM 1/15/04 “Whatever way you go it won't be easy. You could cast plaster around dowels to avoid drilling. Plaster could be made to most any shape and sanded and painted....hmmmmmm. Making ceramic "rocks" would require a kiln and two firings if you glaze the pieces. Ceramic pieces would also have to be made hollow, you can't fire solid pieces........blam!!!” 8:29:11 PM 1/15/04 “I'm buying one already made with real stone. I am tired just reading about all the other stuff. I don't have the means of making one. I wish I did cause I could sell a few of these things, too.” 8:31:03 PM 1/15/04 “$o what i$ the damage for one of tho$e lamp$ anyway$?” 8:32:38 PM 1/15/04 “One hundred and seventy nine dollars plus shipping and handling, which is not too bad considering the price of a desk I would like.” 8:33:36 PM 1/15/04 “A friend of mine makes lamps out of old cheap electric guitars with the guitar mounted vertically on a slab of stone and the lamp shade on the headstock. It takes at least a rudimentary shop to turn out stuff like this.” 8:36:40 PM 1/15/04 And here is the desk “ ”8:36:55 PM 1/15/04 “Wolfeyes, $179 doesn't seem unreasonable for that lamp, if it's well-crafted (looks like indeed it is). The thing about unique craft items is that while they certainly may cost more, you'll forever appreciate an art-like object that no mass-production-ware could hold a lamp to. ;-)” 9:22:09 PM 1/15/04 “its ugly-lol ;-)” 10:07:05 PM 1/15/04 “love the desk. How much is it?” 10:14:27 PM 1/15/04 “The desks range from 2000.00 to 8500.00. This particular one is in the 3000.00 range. It's very cool. Here is the site for which you may become the proud owner of one. Elk Cabinets” 10:23:24 PM 1/15/04 “Have you considered hypertufa? Here is a site, but do a google search. There are hundreds of others. www.timpyworks.com/what.html Not sure if that will do the trick for you though. Otherwise I think I'd spring for the lamp. And if the desk is too much $, show the picture to a local woodworker or craftsman and see if he/she could recreate it. But generally they tend to be just as expensive as a catalog” 10:29:07 PM 1/15/04 “What great work!!! My brother is a furniture maker and does lots of custom stuff and unique requests. I am going to send that link his way. It looks like the left support is all one piece. Groovy!” 10:33:31 PM 1/15/04 Kewl lamp! “That doesn't look to hard provided you have the right tools and select to proper rocks. I had a buddy years ago before one was able to buy those prefabed climbing rocks that drill holes thru real rocks that he then bolted to the side of his parents house. He ran a belay(sp) up off the top of the gable. He cooked a drill and several bits. All those rocks in the lamp look rather thin and some are probably 'softer' than others.” 11:54:04 PM 1/15/04 “Neat lamp. I guess one can make a lamp out of just about anything. It boggles the mind.” 1:28:46 AM 1/16/04 “That lamp is pretty cool. It would certainly fit right onto the table next to Wilma's chair in the Flintstones.” 9:15:25 AM 1/16/04 “yeah, that IS an awesome lamp! now i want one! ;-) good taste there, Wolfeyes.” 9:18:26 AM 1/16/04 “I could make you one, but it would cost you more. THe people who make those already have all their jigs and tooling set up, have all their parts ans materials. I'd have to locatea all of that, and that time costs as well. There's also the trial and error period, because I don't know what type of rocks they are using, the material of the lampshade, etc. Is it rawhide or something else? Just go with that company.” 9:20:09 AM 1/16/04 better solution... “instead of stacking in a vertical manner...make a standing lamp with the cord running up a metalic cylindar and the base of wood, then stack rocks in a cairn like fashion, glueing them into place with a clear epoxy. Use skill so that the epoxy is NOT visible from the outside and cover the wood base with smaller rocks. It would be heavy, but, so what, it would look like an actual cairn...and to make it even better, get rocks from your hikes, then it becomes a memory keepsake.” 12:19:25 PM 1/16/04 “I'd probably try a concrete drill bit and a drill press and use sandstone of a varity of colors. The lamp parts I would think you could get from Depot or Lowes. Can't be THAT hard to do. I'm liking the carin idea-great! That's what I need --another project.” 7:22:07 PM 1/16/04 Get the lamp “I love it, just buy it unless you are going to make several with the investment into the tools” 10:02:00 PM 1/16/04 “3000 for a desk, whats another couple hundred for a lamp? that desk deserves a good lamp” 10:09:35 PM 1/16/04 “I really like both those items, very unique.” 11:33:37 AM 1/17/04 “Pfft. IKEA! Cheap, functional, pretty enough. I wouldn't pay 100 dollars for a lamp unless a genie came with it.” 11:47:35 AM 1/17/04 “Okay...this company just sent me an email with 6 other lamp pictures. I am going to order one. Thanks for all the ideas of how to make one but I really do think buying one is the best route for me to go. I don't own anything from Idaho, anyway. Need something from that state. As for the desk, I think I will have to wait until I find someone rich who wants to support me before I can afford to buy one of those. In the meantime, if anyone decides they want to try and make one of these lamps, post a pic when yer done. I might could use two. :)” 11:21:27 PM 1/18/04 “Know what? I'm with Phaedrus on this one. Why in the world would you want to spend that much money on something like that lamp? OK it's nice looking... but c'mon! You could've spent the same amount of money on something more worthwhile.. like a piece of equipment! Sorry, but after looking at your "apartment" pic's (on webshots), it seems to me that you have enough items in there that you don't need more. Don't get me wrong: I'm not being mean or rude or presumptuous... just observant of what you have showing and thrifty. It's the penny-pincher in me... sorry!” 8:14:59 AM 1/19/04 “if you're talking about wolfeyes's apartment, then i think your opinion sucks! her apartment is awesome!” 8:19:20 AM 1/19/04 “You got a website for the lamp Wolfeyes?” 8:21:37 AM 1/19/04 8:26:01 AM 1/19/04 “Why in the world would you want to spend that much money on something like that lamp? BECAUSE I CAN AND I WANT TO?OK it's nice looking... but c'mon! You could've spent the same amount of money on something more worthwhile.. like a piece of equipment!I HAVE ALL THE EQUIPMENT I NEEDSorry, but after looking at your "apartment" pic's (on webshots), it seems to me that you have enough items in there that you don't need more.YES I DO Don't get me wrong: I'm not being mean or rude or presumptuous... just observant of what you have showing and thrifty. It's the penny-pincher in me... sorry!"I ONLY LIVE ONCE SO PINCHIN' IS NOT MY STYLE But thanks for trying to save me some money. I really do enjoy buying unique things and try very hard to stay away from the stores that produce items in China. I will support individual creativity and pay for that creativity before I settle for the Chinese assembly line product. My "apartment" is my home. I enjoy being here and I enjoy creating this space.” 8:39:38 AM 1/19/04 “word.” 8:41:17 AM 1/19/04 “And thanks for the compliment, Scorch. You can come visit anytime!” 8:43:26 AM 1/19/04 “Jeeze! Didn't mean to upset you and raise the hair on the back of your neck there, Wolfeyes! Go! Spend! Buy all you want! What do I care! I was just making an observation! Did it make you feel any better for attacking me for expressing my thoughts?? Sheesh!” 9:37:35 AM 1/19/04 “Put down the coffee now.” 9:42:48 AM 1/19/04 “CAT FIGHT!!!” 9:50:01 AM 1/19/04 “Hikingal: No. It did not make me feel better to attack you. If that is what you consider an attack, I am sorry. I was just surprised to open this thread up and find that someone who I don't know and who does not know me, had some pretty strong opinions of what I should not do with my money and that a couple of photographs brought a stranger to that conclusion.” 9:51:22 AM 1/19/04 “Isn't that what makes this place great...individuality? Hikingal wants more gear and Wolfeyes wants to make her living space better. I don't think Wolfeyes was attacking you, hikingal, I think she was simply responding to what might be viewed as an attack on how she chooses to furnish her home. Personally, I'm with Wolfeyes on this one, but that's just my opinion.” 9:52:40 AM 1/19/04 “hikingal=coyote13?” 11:04:14 AM 1/19/04 “I thought that too, Sass. Kind of boggling to think that some stranger would just jump right out there and say what she said.” 11:08:34 AM 1/19/04 “Say it ain't so, not today of all days. I thought that stake was driven deep enough and we wouldn't see "it" rise up again.” 11:15:36 AM 1/19/04 ??? “Well, I don't get online that often... but when I found this, from Wolfeyes, (after reading about Schoolhouse and seeing the pictures... which led me to looking at the rest of "her" pictures (I'm guessing you're the woman in them?) I looked at the "apartment" pictures) I just made an observation. Guess that was my big mistake! Sorry! Oh... and what's this? "hikingal=coyote13?" Oh well! I'll take it all in stride, and choose my answers/replies more carefully next time. Not to mention, I'll introduce myself first too! Heck, ... whether I'll actually reply to one again..... we'll see. Talk about scaring a person!” 10:54:14 AM 1/20/04 “You're the scarey one Yvonne.” 11:51:50 AM 1/20/04 “Well.....blow me down......it's the same writing style.....same chit she posted the last time she got outted. Sum beach...... chit, she's prolly the mamabear whatever troll too!” 11:58:34 AM 1/20/04
