“I really, really want one of these. However, they are quite expensive. I have been trying to find more of these types of lamps on the internet and have had no luck. I don't want the short one rock "Riverstone" Lamp. I want something like this.



Anyone know of maybe a unique store near them that may carry something like this? Anyone want to try to make one? (Need industrial drill). Anyone got a better internet than me?”

“Mmmmm...I collect rocks with holes in them but that is ridickolos. You'd need a diamond-tipped bit and a water-cooling system to drill the holes in the rocks. It'd be pretty hard to make if you didn't have the right equipment (long pause as I headbang to the beginning of War Pigs but pretty easy if you did.

Sure is neat though.”

“Make plaster rocks, then you can drill them and paint them whatever colors you want.

Perhaps that would be cheating, though...

Or if you know someone who does pottery, you could make pre-holed rocks.”

You could cast plaster around dowels to avoid drilling.

Plaster could be made to most any shape and sanded and painted....hmmmmmm.

Making ceramic "rocks" would require a kiln and two firings if you glaze the pieces.

Ceramic pieces would also have to be made hollow, you can't fire solid pieces........blam!!!”

“I'm buying one already made with real stone. I am tired just reading about all the other stuff. I don't have the means of making one. I wish I did cause I could sell a few of these things, too.”

“A friend of mine makes lamps out of old cheap electric guitars with the guitar mounted vertically on a slab of stone and the lamp shade on the headstock.

It takes at least a rudimentary shop to turn out stuff like this.”

$179 doesn't seem unreasonable for that lamp, if it's well-crafted (looks like indeed it is). The thing about unique craft items is that while they certainly may cost more, you'll forever appreciate an art-like object that no mass-production-ware could hold a lamp to. ;-)”

Not sure if that will do the trick for you though. Otherwise I think I'd spring for the lamp.

And if the desk is too much $, show the picture to a local woodworker or craftsman and see if he/she could recreate it. But generally they tend to be just as expensive as a catalog”

“That doesn't look to hard provided you have the right tools and select to proper rocks.

I had a buddy years ago before one was able to buy those prefabed climbing rocks that drill holes thru real rocks that he then bolted to the side of his parents house. He ran a belay(sp) up off the top of the gable.

He cooked a drill and several bits.

All those rocks in the lamp look rather thin and some are probably 'softer' than others.”

I'd have to locatea all of that, and that time costs as well. There's also the trial and error period, because I don't know what type of rocks they are using, the material of the lampshade, etc. Is it rawhide or something else? Just go with that company.”

“instead of stacking in a vertical manner...make a standing lamp with the cord running up a metalic cylindar and the base of wood, then stack rocks in a cairn like fashion, glueing them into place with a clear epoxy. Use skill so that the epoxy is NOT visible from the outside and cover the wood base with smaller rocks. It would be heavy, but, so what, it would look like an actual cairn...and to make it even better, get rocks from your hikes, then it becomes a memory keepsake.”

“I'd probably try a concrete drill bit and a drill press and use sandstone of a varity of colors. The lamp parts I would think you could get from Depot or Lowes. Can't be THAT hard to do.

Thanks for all the ideas of how to make one but I really do think buying one is the best route for me to go. I don't own anything from Idaho, anyway. Need something from that state.

As for the desk, I think I will have to wait until I find someone rich who wants to support me before I can afford to buy one of those.

In the meantime, if anyone decides they want to try and make one of these lamps, post a pic when yer done. I might could use two. :)”

I will support individual creativity and pay for that creativity before I settle for the Chinese assembly line product. My "apartment" is my home.
