tent for a beginner
I was wondering if anybody knew of a freestanding backpacking tent around 100 dollars that also had a vestibule. Also, it would have to be lightweight.

that depends on what you consider lightweight

the zen is a 2 person so if you are looking for a one person it will be too big

under 5 pounds, 2 person, 100 dollars, AND a vestibule? youre gonna have to sacrifice something, like heat, so if you dont mind that, get the henry shires tarpent

i have one. i love it, but i only used it once, cuz right after i got it, i got one i love even more (hilleberg akto). the pebble is insanely easy to set-up, while the akto is a pain if youre in a hurry or dont have patience, however.

Check out Cabela's XPG 1 and 2 tent. It's just what you are looking for and in that price range.

The Pebble on sale for $90.00

It's tough with the stipulations you've requested, but the Pebble on sale is a good bet. There are other inexpensive tents out there, but not many that are freestanding, with a vestibule and under $100.

Then again, what you want is available so there you go...

The North Face Rock 22 is also on sale and is more roomy with easier ingress/egress but a little heavier. Still a good deal though.

I was going to recomend the Rock 22. We have one and love it. Holds both of us, and we can put our gear at the foot of the tent. There is enough room to "comfortably" get dressed in it, though you can not stand in it. Lots of screen, so condensation is not an issue.

Basically, it replaced to tents we had. It was as light as my small tent, and as roomy as my big tent. Very reasonbly priced also.

I have quoted another on this board many times: Price, lightweight, quality; choose two of these features, you won't get all three. But with htis tent, you come pretty close to all three.

Bottom line: It's a good tent.

I have the hilleberg akto. I don't find it that difficult to set up. The first time maybe. The pitching instructions were worthless. But anyway, definately my favorite tent.

My Akto is right around 2 (if not a little less) pounds for most trips. This last trip, I pitched wrong and had real bad ice build up/condensation inside, but it proved to be nothing that I couldn't play through. I really do go back and fourth about this tent. Some trips, I love it some, it's a hassel, mostly because of user error. I have now seen it in almost every condition that I could think of.....locally that is.....
