One more thing, lizs, for the third time, butt out. You had nothing to do with this trip and NOW you're criticizing the Ranger.

The Rangers were great.... polite, professional and only doing their jobs....and I can see their concern for backpackers......and I am greatful they are here....

What exactly is the party size limit for that area?

"...for those who gave the savage ranger a hard time, he has also read your remarks; it might be a nice gesture to send him a letter of apology. thanks"
napsack

Nobody gave George a hard time, numbnuts and nobody was disrespectful. I've known him for several years and have always found him to be a very engaging and personable individual in my numerous visits to the park. He was well-received at Collins on Friday night and even invited to supper. Those who had never met him before were led to believe that he was the new ranger and an ogre and were very surprised by his extremely pleasant demeanor. We have nothing to apologise for, so you can fuk off, embear's brother.

If you will notice, dayhiker, my post was made BEFORE the ranger gave more information..... and it was not the only post to do so. And I did not use bad language or even call the poster a "troll."

I was trying to help fend off criticism of the trip, which from all appearances of the posts here seemed to go well. I was asking for verification from the ranger. It seems a logical thing to do.

I don't think any apologies are owed for asking for verification.

It also does not seem like a way for a business to run, albeit a recreational one, posting anonymous notes on a message board to chastise people for supposed park infractions.

This just gets odder and odder.

You were (are) part of the problem lizs, on a trip that you had nothing to do with. Prior the the trip, you were fanning the flames. You should work for the National Enquirer, seems right up your alley (double entendre intended).

Right, FG. I am inquisitive and question things that if you step back and look at in a detached fashion, you could see might be done in a better way. Do I do that as a journalist? You bet.

Am I a part of this board? Darn right. Have I been on this board longer than you? I think so. Not that that means anything here or there, but it does mean I've seen a lot on this board. And like to help it evolve and be ever better.

So should we turn a blind eye to how trips are put together? Not ever do a criticism of how messages work and how the people interact on this board? I would guess "yes" is your answer to that, based on your comments.

Is that what you do at your job? Never question your process or try to do things better? Or, if you got an anonymous note from someone, not question who you got it from and if there was any validity to it?

And a comment like "you can fuk off too, lizs..." is very helpful to the overall conversation. I think that is a horrible thing to say to someone on here and it hurts me.

I've met George several times at Savage Gulf. He's a good ranger and is always very professional. For me, I always appreciate the fact that someone gives a dang about me and shows up to see if I made it to camp.

At Sawmill, when Erich asked for permits, some provided permits and others just ignored him. So that Erich wouldn't worry, I talked with him and told him that everyone made it to camp OK. I thought he was being VERY nice to let us off easy and not check every permit. Thanks Erich !

Visitors at SG are VERY lucky to have the rangers there. I wish there were rangers like them in all the places I hike.

Ditto what MDS said. The rangers at Savage Gulf have never been anything other than engaging, polite and professional. I too appreciate their presence and I apologize to embear's brother for my earlier comments.

I am also grateful that Erich didn't insist upon seeing my permit, because it was in my wallet back at the van. :} I promise that I won't do THAT again...

Oh come on lizs! Is “inquisitive” what they call being a troublemaker now days? LOL! You were trying to stir this damn pot before it even got off the ground. Remember the thread you started called “When TT trips go all wrong”? The this was even before the trip took place.

It’s not called inquisitive. It’s called passive aggressive behavior. A person tries to start crap with just enough provocation to be able to say afterwards, “What? What’d I do? Who? Little ol‘ me?”.

We’ve been in the bullshlt business too long to be bullshltted.

Well put, Nigal.

One more thing we should all take away from this; we can abuse each other all we want and no real harm is done. When our posts do damage to others not a part of this forum, however, that goes beyond the pale. We need to keep in mind that this site is monitored.
Father Goose

And agian, what is the group size limit in the gulf?

THAT's a vision I can do without, Nigal. I believe it's 21/campsite.
Father Goose
11:39:41 AM
1/24/04

21 is big. So the alcohol was the big problem? Most places I go as long as no one's swinging from the trees drunk or being too loud it's not really an issue. Most places have an "open display of alcohol prohibited" policy.
Nigal
11:43:21 AM

THERE WAS NO PROBLEM!!! Jesus, people, if you weren't there, leave it the fuk alone!!!
Father Goose

I agree on all points. lizs, it's not fair to say you were here longer than FG. You're implying that gives you more rights to discuss this. If you want to play that game, then I'll say I've been here far longer than you. I've yet to see you organize a trip of any kind. Go play somehwere else.

MDS - if folks didn't show the Ranger their permit and ignored him, then we should apologize for that. I didn't realize that happened. When he came to camp I left to head to the tent and get my permit. Now that you mention it, he did seem surprised when I showed back up with permit in hand.

Also, good point FG about keeping in mind that we play rough here among friends and others will take these conversations differently. That's normal. People tease close friends differently than folks they don't know.

Finally, lizs, I'm not going to debate this issue any further. The tone you're reading here is the same tone people came up to me with on the trip. No one appreicated what you did. You can arugue the point til blue in the face, but it basically pissed everyone off.

OK settle down. I was going off of what the ranger posted. None of the actual people there showed there was a problem. I was going from the ranger's perspective.

I hate to enter the fray here, since none of this is my business, but I consider lizs a friend, and some of you are being very rude and hurtful to her. This is not a private playgound, it is a public forum and if you choose to post publicly, then expect others to chime in with their thoughts and opinions, even if they aren't the same as yours. Telling her to #&%!$ off is not cool at all.

Just as an aside - not saying that napsack isn't who he says he is - but describing the rangers is no proof. I can describe and name most every ranger in BSP, plus tell you a few things about their wives and kids. I also know that the head ranger in BSP at least knows about this site, as he's posted a trail description on the page. He's also posted on other boards dedicated to BSP and Katahdin.

Napsack is for real. He's embear's brother and a ranger at Firey Gizzard, I believe.

I don't care if lizs is your friend. What is uncool is the thread she started before the hike and all the shyte she stirred up as a result. IMHO, she owes embear and everyone who actually went on the hike an apology.

My last word on the subject.

Like I said, I'm not saying napsack is or isn't a ranger, just that the "proof" as posted is not real proof. And really, I don't care one way or the other.

Whether the thread lizs started was uncool or not, that's the chance you take when posting a trip on a public forum. There is that private option when trips are set up.
If the original post about rangers was kept off the forum (the trip organizer could have been e-mailed directly) perhaps this whole "to-do" could've been avoided.
