rei1/4 dome vs squall. Freestanding vs non
Hello,

Been spending up to a week and few overnighters on the REI half dome plus 2 since last year and have been really happy with it. However, it is that time that i decided to go light :)

I am very close to order the Squall (based on rave reviews) but I have few concerns. I do understand the basic differences between free vs non free standing. Here is my dilema:

1) HOw well do non free standing do in very rocky surface ?

2) I often do kayaking trips that require setting up tents on sandy beach. Again, how would a non free standing tent like the Squall will hold up (or not).

3) Are they any good lightweight free standing tents out there ?? 1 or 2 person tent (preferable 1 person).

So far, the new 2 person REI 1/4 dome is the closest lightweight freestanding tent that i know of, weighing at 4lbs 2 oz. However, i am not too fond of paying $229 for a REI made tent.

HELP !!!!!!!!!!

Try this site.

This gives you a great chart on lightweight tents. I am, and remain the Dodder.

I have an REI roadster
I bought my stake-em-down lightweight and found that compared to the half dome which I also own, I stay warmer and save 3 lbs of weight overall. Only 1 pole to arch and then stake the corners out. Worked in rocky terrains with a bit more effort. Another associate said hers worked well in sand. I stayed warmer in the Roadster as well- less interior space to heat. Some of my trail pals said it looked like a coffin though- that's my 2 cents worth!
