Just because someone is in your party it doesn't automatically mean they would be a good president. I think that is the problem in the Democratic party right now -- no clear leader with lots of charisma. There is no one with Kennedy or Clinton's charisma to rally behind.

Dean does act kinda nutty for my tastes. He’s probably a lot of fun at sporting events or street brawls. And that smile looks photoshopped in.

I’ll give him credit for forcing Dems to shed the pink tutus but there are several others in the race more presidential.

Still… if given the choice of Dean or Bush – that one is easy!

I think it's too early to tell what the challenger to bush will be like - it'll be interesting to see what happens once the race really narrows to say Edwards and Kerry.

I'd have to say it's gonna narrow down to Clark......:)

And Clark-Edwards 2004 will not win.Bush again ,but the congress will have great change within the next four years..In 2008 he will leave office as the worst ever to hold the it.

According to one source, Bush has the support of 90% of Republicans and 20% of Democrats right now...supposedly the highest those numbers have ever been.

Things can change very quickly. But if nothing changes between now and the election, the Democratic candidate is going to have trouble.

Phil - From your past posts, I thought you didn’t place much faith in polls.

The latest polls from CBS News/New York Times and Washington Post-ABC News show a pretty even split.

Particularly interesting is how Bush stacks up against a ‘generic’ Democratic candidate.
Bush 48%
Democratic nominee 46%
(VOL) Other 1%
(VOL) Neither 1%
(VOL) Would not vote 2%
DK/No opinion 3%

Should be an interesting year.

I'm not keen on Dean, but he seems to be gettin a raw deal out of his attempt to show some adrenaline.

As for the Bush vs. Dem horse race, I think Bush has a very slight edge. He looks like he is willing to spend huge amounts of money catering to all kinds of interest groups - that in conbination with the mega tax cuts and huge milatry expenses will do huge long term damage, but will probably create enough of a short term buzz to get him elected.

This has been an incredibly slow and weak recovery (especially given the huge deficit spending) - but the timing looks to be good for Bush.

He also should be able to patch things up and make the Iraq situation look rosy in time for the election.

My concern is not so much what Bush has done (which is bizarre enough), but what crap will he get us into (fiscally and militarily) when he does not have re-election hanging over his head? If the Congress was more Democratic he'd develop Lame Duck Syndrome in '07 and '08, but not in the present circumstance.

If you recall, all Bush's rosey scenarios for THE DEBT were based on the taxcuts sunsetting as planned. Now, as predicted, he and his crones want to extend them.

surprise.

On a side note....

Just days after announcing his plan to go to Mars(run, Georgie, run!!!) there was a front page headline about no more funding for the Hubble telescope since they NEED to spend the money on the Moon and Mars.

After a while they may decide that the Moon/Mars thing is beyond our means.

That could be a cute backhanded way to kill Hubble.

ynami - Phil was reasonably accurate about Bush's approval rating. See question 3 of the cbs/ny times poll:

Do you approve or disapprove of the way George W. Bush is handling
his job as President?

Approve
total:50%
Rep:86%
Dem:25%
Ind:45%

Disapprove
total:45%
rep:11%
dem:68%
ind:50%

I know his overall approval rating is fair-to-middling by historical standards but for all I know, it may be the highest rating from within party.

This is one RINO who will likely not vote for the GOP at any level. After seeing that sycophant Santorum on TV last night, I wish he were running this time instead of Specter.

Dean Delivers Top 10 List on Letterman

"Ways, I, Howard Dean, can turn things around."

10. Switch to decaf.

9. Unveil new slogan, "Vote for Dean and get one dollar off your next purchase at Blimpie."

8. Marry Rachel on the final episode of "Friends."

7. Don't change a thing, it's going great.

6. Show a little more skin.

5. Go on "American Idol" and give them a taste of those pipes.

4. Start working out and speaking with an Austrian accent.

3. I can't give specifics yet, but it involves Ted Danson.

2. Fire the staffer who suggested I do this lousy Top 10 List instead of actually campaigning.

1. Oh, I don't know — maybe fewer, crazy, red-faced rants.

Actually, his crazy, red-faced rant was the first sign he actually is human. Maybe a president who can rip off a primal scream every now and again would be good for the country, instead of invading a country to get even for Daddy.

Good point, Geo. I can understand all of the razzing of Dean (and I think he's taken it pretty well), but why does all this make him less desirable as a candidate? I haven't decided if I like him or not, but, if anything, "the yell" raises his standing as far as I'm concerned....

My wife likes Dean. I'm pretty well sold on his takes on the issues, but I might lean toward Clark if I think Dean has become too fringe to beat Bush.

I prefer Clark, but it's refreshing to see a person running for president do something besides wear a plastic grin his agent handlers glued on under his coifed hair.

Embrace the yell
Heck . .I'll go so far as to suggest he should embrace the yell and kick some butt.

Why apologize and swallow it. Why let the media and comedians poke fun while you sit on your hands?

Embrace it.

Make Jame Brown's "I feel Good" your theme song and insert the primal scream.

Fire it up for christ sake. Not down.

Howard stern has been at his best with this.

He has set the rant and scream to AC/DC. And hysterically, to porn.

He has a tape of a porn actress screaming her way to climax as Dean . . .well . .. as Dean screams his way to a climax. The two tapes run together had me in tears in the parking garage the other day before work. Absolutely hysterical.

He has also used songs who use the names of states. EG "In my mind I'm going to Carolina" by JT. He played the chorus with Dean state yell inserted. Hotel California was pretty funny.
