For those who answered Yes...
Have you ever killed anyone in self defense?

manuka, I never had a problem with jhp feeding in a 9mm.

I may have looked at the ballistics chart wrong, but I thought a 38 delivered slightly over 300 fp of energy.

Hollow points do not feed well in a 9mm because it has a sharp ramp.

Tell that to my glock. I put 500 rounds of jacketed hollow points through it without a hiccup. And I've put at least 3 thousand rounds of target-grade FMJ rounds without a problem as well.

anything over 300 ft/lb/sec will take the average person completely off their feet.

I think you've been watching too many hollywood movies.

"manuka, I never had a problem with jhp feeding in a 9mm."

I think it depends on the gun. I've never seen a jam with a Glock or a Berretta but have seen many with POS Taurus and Lammas. Thatt damn lamma would feed anything but military ball worth a crap.

QUALITY!

Would & could might be a big difference when confronted with the real possibility though.

May I ask what the situation was?

I've had some feed failures with JHP in my Taurus PT92, but a little work on the ramp should clear that up. Usually though, it feeds JHP no problem.

I feel more comfortable with a home defense gun, but it will be a legal expense if you use it. I lean toward the 12 ga having shot & been shot. I lean towards birdshot as it is VERY effective at close range but loses energy fast. You won't have to spend the rest of your life in prison for killing your neighbor's kid. When I was much younger like you guys, I opted for the .357 mag. Unfortunately if you ever need to use it, your night vision will be gone from the muzzle flash & you will be hearing impaired (like me) not that a 12ga isn't loud. The police techies will find your bullet some distance away. I have multiple handguns & qualify every year for my job. I received the maximum score possible this year & I still opt for the shotgun. There are situations where gunplay will be necessary, but your life will never be the same after.

I like my DA .44 SP. It throws a 240 gr. ball at just under 1000 fps at muzzle.

I like speed but I also like mass.

bearmagnet, while in private practice, my client weren't exactly the best people to be around.

And when a client't former partner began to think my client was going to roll, he naturally wanted to "discuss" it with me. At one point in my life, coming into my office and "showing" me you were armed was a sure way to really piss me off.

Yes, I would have shot him had he not used enough reason to take his hand off of the gun. The weapon in my posession fired on three pounds of pull. I am comfortable I had 2 and a half pounds of slack pulled out of it.

As usual I agree with you catskhiker, shotgun is by far best home defence option, and also less likely to have the DA press for an indictment.

For Chili36, Mutt, and Nigal, the issue being addressed is stopping power or how much of the bullet energy is absorbed by the target.
Or how well does the hollow point open up or fragment on impact with about 4 inches of meat (front and back of ribcage, not much resistance in lungs) the answer with a 9mm is -not much- most of the energy is still with the bullet as it passes out the other side. There are some bullets developed for such defence situations, most are illegal to own and use.

I'm shocked at the amount of closet gun owners here.

I never would have guessed it.

Bit, you should experiment with some other factory loads and a fine file for any metal burrs on the ramp.

Briar Rabbit, why are you shocked ? statistically 1 house in 3 in the US has some sort of gun in it.

Also not exactly closet, everyone here is discussing this quite openly, if the internet can be considered open (j/k)

My wife will not allow guns in the house, not even for hunting. My father left my three sweet pieces, but neither my mother or my wife will let me have them. I'm pissed because I'd like to start hunting and I've shot pellet and BB competively for years in my youth. I grew up around guns ALL my life and concider myself VERY responsible....well, when it comes to guns. :)

One conversation went like this:

Wife: You're NOT bringing those things in this house:

Me: What if someone tries to phuck with us?

Wife: Then, you'll have to take care of it.

Me: So I can have them?

Wife: No.

Me: So, I'll have to take care of it the hard way, up close and personal (swords and knives).

Wife: Yep.

Me: Yes, dear.

But Laq, try to see the wifes viewpoint, both the Katana and the 12 feet and pull the trigger options suffer the same drawbacks.

1. they make a mess on the carpet and she thinks that you will expect her to clean the mess up.

2. neither will dissipate your raging testosterone quite the same as if you choke the intruder with your bare hands and wring their neck like a chicken.

The bear spray thing IS a good idea that I didn't think of.

I think the thing she's worried about is the kids finding them. I've been 'round and 'round about it and it ain't gonna happen.

Well, that and it'll be "another thing you can kill me with"...But THAT'S made as a joke. She made that comment after my lastest purchase. Hey, it's gear, tho!

http://www.quarterbore.com/knives/m9bayonet.html Knives I gots plenty of! The Phrobis M9 is one I hooked while fishing (in a graveyard no less!) Its the military issue not the civilian. I just havnt figured out how to rig it onto my shotgun yet! LOL

Someone suggested moving ,which would be great except It cost more than I have!! Sure I could move into one of these new complexes with the big fence around it ,gaurd house and video cameras if I had $1500.00 a month for rent. Payments on a decent house would be less than half that. Plus I dont know if I could stand living in a compound!
Maybe Ill move back to Dundalk ,which has alot more crime than here but at least I know most of the criminals there!LOL

a few things
A shotgun is the best gun for home defense make sure to use 6 or 7 shot because unless the walls are cement or another very hard material buck shot will go though. Most apt walls are simply sheet rock and insulation. Your accuracy with a handgun in a stressful low light situation will be horrible unless you train for it constantly. Not to mention that the sound of a shotgun racking in the dark is probably the scariest sound in the world to a home invader. However if you have kids in the house a shotgun is not practical to use as it is dangerous to leave it loaded and uncased. Get a handgun if you have kids and a safe to put it in. I keep a .45 in a lock box just under my bed. I unlock it and leave the cover down before I go to bed and lock it again in the morning. Dont leave it unlocked when you are not in the room with it. Depending on your training level and personal preferance you could go with a auto or revolver. revolvers tend to be simple to operate and low maitianence. I always have mine loaded at night simply because of the fact that in a home invasion situation time and stress level are probably going to keep you from having time or the ability to load it. Then your left with an expensive impact weapon, in that case it would be cheaper and more effective to sleep with a big rock by your bed. But the most important and effective weapon to have is your telephone. It's recommended that if someone does come into your house you call 911 first and foremost then move to a corner in your room where there is a clear field of fire and no danger of hitting anyone else in the apt then loudly annouce I called the police I have a gun get out of my house. If you are using a shotgun that is the time to rack the pump just to make your point. As far as 9mm go I can tell you from experince that the velocity is so high that the round just punches right though the target (person) and they don't feel as much as heavier rounds. Especially if they're hopped up on drugs. As far as anything traveling over 300 fps knocking someone off they're feet I've seen people still standing after being shot with a .50 cal machine gun, half his torso was gone but the lower half was on its feet. I have seen people still standing after being hit with rounds traveling at 3600 fps. So don't count on round size or velocity knocking someone down. Also you should absolutley take a self-defense course as well as a firearms course they can only help. Just remember your most effective weapon is always to dail 911 first.

TROLL ALERT
You joined TT just to post a Fuego subject message. And then you were able to locate an old thread not recently used for your message. Bull! You are most likely one of the regular trolls posting on TT, trying to hide behind yet another name..

It was an interesting message, although probably lifted from somewhere else. You must live in a dangerous area. I recommend that you get a job and move into a better/safer location. Also, I disagree with the article. It can be too easy to forget to lock the gunbox on some mornings. You might be in a hurry, first to use the bathroom and then to get somewhere quickly, like work or an appointment, or to help someone or to attend to your sick child. Additionally, I don't want a gun in my hands, when I'm half asleep. I might kill a loved one, while having a nightmare.

Yeah, dude, a racking a shotgun will cause an invader to crap his intestines out! You don't even have to aim with a shotgun, too - just point it in the general direction. And use birdshot to avoid shooting through walls!

Yeah, and I'd rather have a .22LR than a 9mm. I've taken multiple 9mm slugs, but only noticed it when I got home and showered.

This gives you a few minutes to discuss the error of their ways and allow them to make a full confession of their failures to live as a productive member of society.

IMHO, Don't put anything like an 'Insured bt Smith and Wesson' sign on the door. It just tells people that you have a handgun to steal.

Stick with the shotgun IMO, you'll hit what you're aiming at. A .357 is hard to handle without a lot of (expensive) practice - not using .38 Spec. rounds.

Relying on 911 or an alarm (both of which can be disabled in about 3 seconds prior to entering a house) is a good way to get dead. I prefer to exercise my rights to take care of myself if need be. My gun is much like my wallet or my watch. It’s just a part of my daily routine. If a person properly trains and educates themselves a gun has no more danger to someone they love than a broom.
