Does anyone else here
have a thing for maps? I wondered if with all the backpackers and outdoor types there was anyone else who really likes maps? C'mon, I know I'm not the only whacko on TT! I put them up on the walls and will sit and pour over them if it has to do with outdoors or hiking. My Dad gets pissed at me cause I don't take that much care with road maps as I do trail maps. He found out I'd gotten turned around 3-4 times on I-40 Knoxvegas and boy! did I get a sermon.
Its just not as interesting as trail maps.

I have the entire Adirondack Park and NY Capital Region on CD. I sit there and plan trips I would like to do at least once a week. Oh and by the way, I use topo maps for road maps more than I use road maps for road maps.

Yeah, ANY kind of maps... or trail information. Last night I had farmer types at this dairy banquet really wondering about me when I insisted on know WHY the Chickentown monument (What WAS Chickentown??!?) sits in a pasture, close to a road going into the Big Woods? ;-) BUT... I did get info that there's state forest entrances in the Big Woods, so now I gotta find sources, maps, whatever to get me in there!!! Well, these people also have read my column and know I go obscure places; maybe it was just the shock of seeing such interest FIRSTHAND AND IN PERSON!! LOL!

I have them framed and hanging on my family room walls. =) And files and files full of them. Antique maps are especially cool but usually too darn pricey. Replicas are what I have.

In my old apt I had maps of many of our adventures on the walls and a huge map of the US with pins of all our trips. The kids loved it, it led to many a conversation and memories.....better get back up in the new place.

I love maps.....I'm starting my Masters program in Geography next week. I like the subject, it'll bolster my teaching and it'll possibly give me a new career if I want.

I'm a recovering mapaholic. I have file cabs full of topo's. I have multiple CD topo program discs. I make my own too. When I hike I bring the surrounding area's too. I bushwhack in odd directions on short notice. This is easy for me because I have been doing it for decades & usually hike alone, so I don't need approval.

I have almost all of the USGS of the Adirondack Park, I have USGS maps for areas of SD, MT, WY, ID, CA, ND, CO and AK.

I also have the large scale maps of the Adirondack Park, most of the DeLorme Gazetteers and DeLorme's Topo4 software and a site that I am going to be doing hike reports for is sending me Nat Geographics Topo software.

I am always looking for older USGS maps around the turn of the century (they have camps and things on them that no longer exist.

I just started a new file drawer at home for my maps. I have them filed by state and by areas within the state with subcategories for trail and topo maps.

I've also kept every map from National Geographic since I first started getting the mag in the 80's. You'd be surprised how those can come in handy when I'm dicussing or reading about a particular region of the world, I can just go pull out a map if I need to.

My wife says that give me a topo and compass and I'm fine. Give me a map to get out the Mall where SHE took me shopping and I get lost.

True....but I'd rather be our somewhere with some variation in scenery than a suburban shoppy mall.

LOL @ Maple
My gurl! Too darn funny.

I will admit my map folding skills are not great. I am a little ADD when it comes to taking time to 'fold' the map. HyperHypo. ;-p

I have been fussed at by more than one hiking partner for not folding the map correctly.
I am trying to do better.
I'm better. I don't wander around brushing my teeth and reading anymore. And I fold my maps neatly 95% of the time."
danababy

a map is meant to be used...
I fold them and fold them and fold them, till I have the section that I want facing up. I dislike stopping and having to unfold a map when I'm on a trail. I just wanna pull it out of my pocket and be on the page that I'm hiking...

you all are silly...I have a gizillion maps and everyone of them has been folded so many different directions that it don't matter anymore. But, when I do put them away, I do fold them back up correctly, they lay flatter in my file. I have a filing system that has a folder for every state. In it is a state road map, state park booklet, and anything related to that state, literature etc...books I keep on the bookshelf.

I once folded a map of Stratusloops in my manner of folding and he almost had a cow...it was so funny.

Warning...if you want your map to remain pristine...don't give it to me. Its only a thing, and can easily be replaced when worn out...and a worn out map, is a map that has been used and loved and has shared in the journey and adventure.

I'm ChicagoMark and I must be a map addict. I just pulled out ONE of my files to respond to Wounded Knee on the Boundary Waters thread.

Now I'll probably dig through the files and not get any sleep.

Good to know I'm not alone
In Winter I run on the treadmill. I have always kept photos of my goals I'm training for in front of me while I run. To keep from getting bored my Smokies relief map is on the wall in front of me where I can study it or the trail map while I exercise. It helps me cope with the boredom of running and think about something else instead of ouch this hurts.

Geez. What a bunch of dorks. Who the hell could love a map?

Don't write this down, but I find cartographers probably as boring as you do. Mrs. kleet finds me boring too. I'm a little bit long-winded, I don't translate very well into our generation, and my jokes are terrible.
[Bell rings, TTers rise to leave]
But that doesn't relieve you of your responsibility for this material. Now I'm waiting for maps from some of you... Listen, I'm not joking! This is my job!

Maps are everywhere in my apartment... I've got state maps on display in my gear room and National Park maps and posters on my bedroom walls.

I pick up state maps when I cross state lines on road trips, even if I don't figure to be back to that state. Some are still in good shape, others look like what Stikmon describes.

Thank you, all, especially Bit; I feel much better now. I'm learning to accept myself.

Actually, half my class is in Montreal at the theatre and I dragged the remnants - all nine of them to the library. I have spent most of this period, except for my TT fix, looking at maps of cross country ski areas and Bed and Breakfasts in Quebec, Eastern Ontario and northern New York.
