Went to see the film tonight. It was fantastic! Go see it if you can, even if you don't climb. The story and the cinematography were excellant.

It is playing at the Nickolodeum in Portland today. We'll do some skiing, then go see it. I am looking forward to it.

Tango - it's here!

I snuck out of the house last night to catch the 9:30. I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot about mountain climbing (enough to know that I won't be doing it). What an amazing story. The movie was essentially the book only with moivn pictures. Not much character development, storytelling. You felt more like you were on the climb with them.

Good to see Joe's visual of some of the situations becuase I couldn't quite follow in the book particularly when he fell in the crevasse. I kept trying to visualize what he was explaining but I was never sure if I had it right. For the most part I was on target.

It was cool to see the actual mountain on screen as well.

I loved the voice over. And seeing the emotion in Joe and Simons faces when they spoke of the incident was powerful stuff.

I am slaving away all week. I'll have to go this coming weekend. This next weekend is going to be killer! Friday I am going to a HOCKEY GAME, Saturday the movie and Sunday I am going to ride dueling dragons 17 times in a row. (that's a rollercoaster at Islands' of Adventure)

Birch - I totally agree. I enjoyed seeing his emotion as well. What a badass dude. I kept thinking to myself - I wonder when I would have given up vs him? I also truly wonder what Joe (and I) would have done in Simon's place. That's a big unanswered - we can never truly know what he was gong through at the time.

Tango - watch out - you might want to make sure it will be there next weekend - there weren't many people in the theatre and it might get pulled - you may want to call.

Wow, I want to see this as I hiked their route about three months ago on the Huayhuash Circuit in Peru. Even went fishing with the brothers and sisters that carried Joe out on their mules.

Totally cool!

What a great documentary! The movie brought you there. Very moving.

Convinced me that I would never like to do something where you trust ropes and hooks.

Went to see the movie last night. It is totally awesome. Just knowing what Joe had to do to get out is totally amazing. I felt bad for Simon, how do you make that decision and live with it.

One thing I did find interesting is that there were more women to see the movie than men. There was probably only 15 people to see it and 12 were women. Not saying that women aren't into movies like that but it did suprise me.

What I was amazed at was Joe Simpson's sense of humor. I know it was emotional for him to return to the scene (as read in Outdoor Mag). His partner reminded me of Beaker (Muppet fame) and the drifter they had picked up was utterly clueless.

Great Movie and I agree with Birch. Best Adaptation. Can't wait til it comes out on DVD!

It'd be worth it to make the drive to see it, so long as its playing within a couple of hours of you. Heck, if you'd drive 6+ hours to the 'Dacks for a dayhike, that should be no sweat. ;-)

I loved the movie almost as much as the book.

I would have liked it if they had done something to draw on the mountain where different things happened. I went back and looked at the photos in the book and was much more impressed by the distance Simon lowered Joe and how far Joe got on his own.

I loved their Brittish understatement: "at this point I was somewhat alarmed..."

This movie is too damned good. I've seen the darn thing 4 times already, and have a sinking feeling I'll be buying the DVD when it comes out. If you haven't gotten around to watching the flick, you need to do so ASAP!

Touching the Void II
Buddha and Artex go climbing, but before they tackle the mountain, Artex cuts the rope attached to Buddha at the local bar, sending me spiraling into a vat of ugly girls. After 4 hours, I finally crawl back to basecamp, a shell of a man, never wanting to have sex again.

Thanks Artex, ya bastard!

I just saw the movie last night - it was awesome and harrowing. Simpson's survival was just an awesome piece of strength, ingenuity, luck, endurance, will, etc. I liked that the director never got in the way of the story.

To be honest, I'm tired most of the time, still pretty weak and some of the grafts and burns are getting itchy - but I'm getting a little stronger everyday and swallowing is getting easier. I can eat more and more things without wondering who knows the Heimlich maneuver.

ped, lol, you are too funny. It's good to see that you were able to get out and see a movie.

I saw the movie about a month ago. Then Joe was on Oprah showing clips of it. He said that the only person who may not have cut the rope on you is a family member. They would have went to the death with you, but you can't expect that from a friend, and it's not right to.

I'm not sure why Simon didn't follow the procedure suggested by Manuka - but it does sound like cutting the rope was the right decision based on what he knew at the time. It's to Joe's credit that he defends Simon so consistently.

I would have done it at basecamp, BB. Heck, I would have cut the rope on the plane on the way TO basecamp.

I might have cut the rope at the mention that he would be coming.

Fuggit, I'll just cut the rope now.
