Rich, there is a really nice loop you can do with the Pinnacle and you wouldn't need to shuttle. The loop is 9 miles and you get both the Pulpit Rock and the Pinnacle. You start at Windsor Furnace, hike the AT up to Pulpit and then the Pinnacle, continue north on the AT for another 1-2 miles. You come to an open field and there is a woods road to your left. Take that road down through a nice hollow with Hemlocks and rhoderdendon and by the Hamburg Reservoir and back to your vehicle at Windsor Furnace.

descending down from the Pinnacle is nice and easy going too. It makes for a really nice loop. I think it's really pretty back in there.

I'm thinking the color should be pretty good this weekend on the Pinnacle section. Pulpit Rock is my favorite view on the AT from Boiling Springs to Kirkridge Shelter. Pinnacle is a nice 180* view too. Both should look nice in the fall.

According to my official AT map, the distance from Eckville shelter to Windsor Furnace shelter is about 9.5 miles. Distance from Windsor Furnace to Route 61 is just over 5 miles.

There's a small parking area along a side road just off Route 61 where the AT goes under the highway.

I think I've hiked that loop the time I went down there 2 years ago. I don't have a map, but from what you just described it sounded like the hike we did.

Rich--

You guys can hike with us. We're going to be shuttling cars anyway and it wouldn't take but a minute to drop your car at the Hamburg Reservoir.

We'll be there tomorrow to hike with you guys from Eckville. We will be leaving here at 8AM.

How are the leaf colors down there? In the city here they are peaked, but in the mountains it's little past peak.

Okay... so according to one of jmitch's post, youans will meet at Port Clinton @ 10:30 AM. I figure your shuttle to Eckville will take maybe 15 minutes, so that puts starting time for the hike at about 10:50 AM. Of course these times are subject to a number of variables. Nontheless, Rich and I could meet youans at Eckville ...but I'm not sure exactly where? So someone PLEASE tell us... meet at the AT crossing at Hawk Mtn Road? ...or at the Eckville shelter? ...or at the Eckville parking area? HELP!

...or perhaps a better idea might be to meet youans at Port Clinton, then spot one of our vehicles at Windsor Furnace parking area on the way to Eckville. But where exactly in/at Port Clinton will you meet to organize the shuttle?

Rich--

The colors are building but I don't think they've quite hit peak yet. There's still whole a lot of green in my yard and I can see my lawn.

M Silver--

We are meeting at the Dunkin Donuts on Rt 61 (in front of Cabela's) and then heading up to Eckville. If you guys meet us there we can drop your car at the Hamburg Resevoir lot and then you won't have to loop back to the car. Good enough?

Thinking about a trip this weekend- looks like warm weather.

How about the Mid State and Greenwood Spur? Shuttle is easy. Tons of views, awesome scenery, virgin forests, rhododendron tunnels, and four incredible state natural areas- Big Laurel Flat, Bear Meadows, Alan Seeger, and Detweiler.

Will try to camp along Detweiler.

Will meet at Greenwood Furnace State Park.

We're up on the OLP this weekend. Sounds like you have a nice trip ahead of you, though. Is that a loop (using the spur)?

Probably so, but its convenient to everyone going. And I've done all of MD and parts of the AT in southern PA and want to start linking the parts together.

Looks like tomorrow might almost be too warm to hike!

I was thinking of hiking from the Wycoff Trailhead on the Quehanna Hwy to Big Spring Draft and then the Quehanna counter clockwise, camp somewhere around Arch Spring. Then complete the loop on Sunday using the East Connector Trail, Meeker Trail and David Lewis Trail. The total loop looks to be about 22 miles and there are options to shorten it too.

If you're interested, we could throw in a shuttle too.

I am going hiking with a friend from work. What say you?

the weather looks pretty nice too. I was thinking of a Saturday morning start.

I think it's a bit more than 22 miles. Expect wet conditions, but it's a very nice trail.

I still think we should do the MST- it's closer and probably more scenic- but rocky.

I'm headed to the Thunderswamp Sat morning. It's close to home and my ankles have healed up nicely since the last time. ;)

If anyone needs an overnight...big lot on 402 by 9:30.

my friend has been wanting to do the Quehanna for a long time. He's pretty set on it.

We can also cut down Sanders to Red Run and over that way, that'll shave off a few miles on Sunday.

Yo E&S and jmitch,

When would be the best time of the year to hike the length of the Quehanna? Jimmy San and myself are looking at this as a possibility for this coming year.

I think fall is best, Sept or October, it's cooler, plenty of water, and a good chance to see the elk in rut.

Late spring is also very nice, but some of the stream crossings can be tricky.

ok, ENS, I'm a strong maybe. Though I'll probably take the x-country ski trails back to the parking area- may check out gore vista. The downfall is that I'll miss sanders draft and red run- very, very beautiful.

It's a lovely stretch of mostly scout-sharpened rocks in the Poconos. ;)

CP, I was thinking clockwise, 16-17ish or so on Sat. Finishing up on Sunday. I can do less or more. Just need a good walk. :)
