cracked fingers, need help

“all my fingers have cracked and are as sore as hell. i need a good home remedy to moisturize my hands. anybody have suggestions?”

“1. Cover your hands in crisco

2. Let sit for 20 minutes, then remove with a clean cotton cloth

3. Dip your hands in vaseline , making sure to cover all areas that are cracked.

4. Let stand for 30 minutes, then remove with a clean cotton cloth

5. soak your hands in warm salt water for 30 minutes, making sure to swish often.

6. Dry with a clean cotton cloth

7. Avoid trolling internet message boards for 60 days.”

“can't do anything re the chemicals; I use a lot of alcohol at my job, that stuff makes gloves rot.”

“if I wear the gloves at work, then I end up with cracked fingers with glove reside inside the cracks which has to be scrubbed out. ouch & yuck.”

“i know what you mean about the alcohol eating up the gloves...i use laquer thinner all day and it really eats them up too...oh well thats what i do...we have some product that not only removes any paint from our hands but also moisturizes...ill look and see whats in it .....”

“the gloves I have are rubber coated cotton. They're great for grip, but useless with chemicals. Other option is good chem-resistant gloves, but then I can't feel what I'm doing. I had this same problem even before I started with the chemicals...sensitive skin, I guess”

“My step daughter has wicked dry skin problems - to the point that it cracks and will bleed if we were to let it go...

anyway, there's this oatmeal stuff that we used to put in her bath that was really really good. I think its Aveeno, get it at CVS or Eckerds.”

Ivygal - my gloves are kinda cool..knit cotton with the palm side dipped in rubber. I probably would have problems with the rubber against my skin, but it doesn't go through the cotton (except when using too much alcohol or mibk). I may nab a pair for gardening this summer, they're very grippy. like a gecco.”

trust me - I've had such a terrible time with the cold this winter and dry skin - I tried the Aveeno and its done the trick!

oh - olive oil is also great but gets mighty slippery and nasty”

“I'm with birch. My hands got so bad once that no matter what I tried nothing help. By the time I dragged myself to the doctor he didn't even want to touch my hands. Yeah, they were quite lovely. Anyway, a prescription steroid cream cleared them right up.”

“I used to do a lot of hand woodwork. The extensive finish sanding was all done by hand. I would develop cracks through the
skin at the corners of my thumb
nails and around some of my finger
nails, especially during winter
months. Nothing doctors prescribed
would help in healing. I discovered
that sealing the crack with super
glue, after cleaning the wound of
course, would allow the cracks to heal in about a week. It works
every time for me. A few years
later I read that surgeons now
use something similar in certain

“Either plain latex gloves or if you're sensitive to latex then nitrile gloves offer pretty good resistence to alcohol and other chemicals. We use both in our lab all the time.


Like twigeater, I would suggest the bag balm. You can get it at any farm supply pretty cheap and it works miracles on cracked skin.”

“I forgot about cornhuskers, that stuff works good!

Docs are using a superglue like stuff on wounds now with good success, less scarring, etc. It seals the wound and allows healing from the inside out.”

“The quickest healing remedy.....
after a shower or bath, when your skin has absorbed some moisture, slather your hands in bag balm, and then put a pair of socks or cotton gloves on, and then go directly to sleep(as you won't be able to do much else in this condition. You may have to repeat nightly till healed, but you will have relief after one day!!!”

“Honey, the bag balm will work just as Wintersolstice has suggested. It is messy though and stains things with greasy spots,etc.
If you want to use something else during the day Zims makes a Crackcreme lotion now. It used to just come as a little bottle of liquid, but my Daddy sent me a bottle of the handcreme. He uses it for hands that got frost bitten back in the 1980's. He will always have some trouble with them it was so bad. If it can keeps his hands healthy and looking good as they do..... It can fix darn near anything. I've only been able to find it at Wal-Mart so far.”

“Really, this stuff is great. My wife is a pharmacist and after using it herself recommends it all the time. We can buy it at drugstores around here.”

“I have never heard of Zim's Crack Creme. I will look around for it here. My husband and kids suffer from the cracked hands. I have had less frequent problems. We have found improvement by taking Vitamin C and Zinc supplements although I have one friend who tried it after chemotherapy and radiation and the zinc made her feel lousy.

We use the Eucerin hand creme and it is one of the few things that doesn't cause burning for my daughter. I will look for the Zim's though in case it works better. Winter is always the worst for us.”

“Is GREAT! Our whole family uses it and we have to keep the giant size bottle of it. Our dermatologist got us hooked on it 17 yrs ago when it was harder to find. Zims is something ok to use on cracked hands and even soles of feet.”
