I always found this stuff fascinating reading as a kid. (So was I just warped? Do kids read about this stuff today? To think about it, in a way I can't believe they had young kids reading this stuff! lol)

I see on Public TV, this week, there is going to be some show doing an autopsy on what must have been some supposed "witch's" body. And then they were mentioning LSD. Sounds very interesting. I think the channel I was watching said Wednesday, 7:30 p.m..... which I supposed might vary.

In 12th grade English we had to study the "Crucible" and the Salem Witch Trials. Good stuff. We look at what they did (kill people for being supposed witches) as they were ignorant people...but think about what history will say about us? Now that's a conversation.

I don't remember if it was assigned at school or not, but I'm sure I was reading about the witch trials the same time I was reading about "Misty of Chincoteague." LOL! (maybe that explains a lot about what has happened since my formative years... LOL!)

Can any kind of violence be
spoken about in a school any more?
How would the French Revolution be
taught? Surely the latest technology (the guillotine)
couldn't be mentioned.

Why can't you mention violence in school? I've never heard that one, and I have three kids.

What if it turned out a majority of them really were witches?

Do a websearch on 'ergot'

I don't know much about it except that I think it happened somewhere called Salem, and it involved people believed to be witches. I think it happened before I was born....

Yeah, I heard the rye bread mold causing halusinations and stuff. Wierd! Even so, come on, really, who burns another person alive?

Will church leaders do ANYTHING to gain and hold power?

It's a program called Secrets of the Dead. This one in particular is called The Witches Curse. I've been hoping to catch it but I think I might have missed it on my local station. :-(

none of the American witches were burned alive. They were either hung or pressed to death (only one guy was pressed). The burning took place during the dark ages in Europe.

That's quite a pressing issue in itself.

"...rye bread mold causing halusinations... "

It's called lysergic acid diethylemide, and it causes hallucinations (and cravings for lots of beer, if memory serves).

wasn\'t the PBS movie \"Three
Sovereigns for Sarah\" about the
Salem trials? Sarah Towne married
Edmund Bridges, who owned some
waterfront property, she managed
a tavern on the property for her
husband. He later died and she
inherited the property before
marrying Cloyes, hence Sarah Towne
Cloyes. Throughout the inquisitions
in Europe property of the
persecuted was consfiscated. Could
a desire to acquire her property
have led to the accusations against
her and her sister Mary Towne
Easty?

The fear of losing power
is so strong.....
I read Fox's book of Martyrs
during my preteen years... scary.
Our country's history is full
of examples of people coming
here to escape persecution and
also unfortunately a few
attrocities against those who
seek autonomy out of mainstream
denomination.

This makes it even more disturbing that they came here to escape oppression at other’s hands to only begin doling it out by their own hands.

Ergotism is caused by the chemicals in the fungus called ergot (pronounced AIR-got). Consumption of foods contaminated with ergot and ergot derivatives may cause vomiting, diarrhea, hallucinations, and may lead to gangrene in serious cases. Historically the fungus has been implicated in epidemics causing thousands of fatalities, but due to increased knowledge of this fungus and a more varied modern diet such epidemics no longer occur in humans. However, chronic exposure through consumption of contaminated foods can lead to health complications.

the deal with the wheat fungi or whatever that was is probably true..i mean think of how people who were retarded got treated then...then imagine people who eat the wheat to make them go a little higher than the clouds...it is gross what happened but then again seeing the understanding of people then...not surprising

liz- the history of Salem Witch Trials is awesome, but the town is very commercial, especially on Halloween. I've been there for 2 Halloweens and me, Mapleleaf, and Gemini actually went there during our New England trip a few weeks back. VERY crowded, but very cool history. Just not what we were looking for at the time we went!

some of my friends are witches and they say this is pretty common. the scary thing is if another witch is after you, you do not know how much power they have or what spells they might cast. if you can get into a good coven, you are better protected though because others are less likely to mess with you out of fear of retaliation

An it harm none, do what ye will ~ Wiccan Rede

if any of you hikers are witches, here is a protection spell for you -

"By the dragons light, on this (month) night,
I call to thee to give me your might,
by the power of three, I conjure thee,
to protect all that, surrounds me, so mote it be!"

Why don't you just throw a bucket of water on them?
