A question from elsewhere about this trip
.......Actually, professor, it wasn't the quality of the water but rather the distance between the puddles. ....so..... colder than 29-degrees with snow-dust? Less oxygen than NONE? [/I]

Well, the water is easy to come by, lakes and rivers. Even one sections of trail with bothersome crossings, ala the Gila.

Altitude (9-11,000 ft) on this one is signigicantly greater as is the vertical. Thousand foot days may be the norm, I think there is a three thousand foot day. The Pecos also has significantly more precipitation than the Sandias. If a storm comes through the night we camp at 11,000 ft. We could get a dump of a foot or so. Between weather (similar to Sandias, periodic fronts), I would predict sunny 30's-50's, beautiful aspens and tremedous vistas. Nights will be as high as 11,000, but most 9,000-10,000. For night time temps, I'd be prepared for single digits. Most likely teens. I've plotted the route on Topo, need to figure out if I can post it. It ends up a 31 mile loop and allows a two night stay at a high alpine lake at the base of the Truchas peaks. If weather and circumstances permit, you can hit these three and a fourth in one day.

I'm getting pressure to do the Chilkoot and float to Whitehorse with my AK buddy. I'm holding him off till next year for this trip.

Now I could get in trouble, I invited the guy who wants me to do the Chilkoot to check this out.

I've added a route map and elevation profile to the trip description.

I think there are 5 or 6 above 13,000 adjacent to the route. The Truchas Peaks, all above 13 can be done in one day. There are also Chimayosos Peak and Pecos Baldy.

Any questions about the trip or route?

From what I can tell, we shouldn't have a hunting season on.

for those of you who have summer nine months of the year, come on this trip for fall weathe, maybe even early winter.

Got any room on this trip for an Easterner? I have been dying to get out west and do some backpacking. This might work for me if the logistics work out. The only thing I worry about is the altittude.

My experience is that with this many maybes, there is plenty of room. I'm not sure I'd like to have the group larger than 8-10. If more want to come, there are additional routes that can intersect with the route above.

The altitude is real. If you have the time, drive out. That will help some. At toejam's suggestion, the route is lower with less vertical in the first couple of days. The distances are also kept pretty short. That will allow some to camp and sit, some to camp and explore. Water is not a problem in the Pecos so you don't have the problem of dry camping if you fall short of a spring, like some areas here.

7 "maybes".

Is there anything you need to know about the trip that will help you decide? Logistics? Quality of the trip? Water? Weather? Distances? Altitude?

The Pecos is really a fabulous wilderness area, and this should be a low usage time.

Well, my hesitation to go with a firm "yes" is mostly not knowing about getting time off work. Also, being a desert-dweller (and loving Death Valley in the summer) I am a bit worried about the coldness factor. How warm of a bag would I need and how many clothes? I am a big cold whimp :)

What do you think Toe Jam?
Does this sound about right.

I'm thinking a 15 or 20+ bag would be good. In general, expect crisp fall weather. Highs could be in the upper 40's to even 60's unless a storm comes through. In that case, it could dump snow and temps could drop drastically for a couple of days. Rain gear a must, but you could leave it packed the whole trip.

My clothing will look something like this.

gortex jacket, serves as additional winter layer

gortex pants, serve as additional winter layer

poly pro long underwear
poly t
cordura pants
poly pullover sweater
down or fleece jacket
wool socks
fleece gloves
fleece hat

don't forget sunglasses and sunscreen.

It can't be the wilderness that is keeping people from signing up. Is it my breath? Smelly feet? Bad attitude?

Well, I took a break from working (on a long weekend Saturday no-$%^&)#@-less) and plotted the trip. I was thrown by the scale of the map you posted, at first glance it looked like a regular full scale topo, which made it look like a day trip. I knew that couldn't be right, so I opened TOPO and got the scale right, now I'm psyched. Looks like a great trip. I can't commit in blood yet but I'm warming up to it. If any CA or AZ folks are considering it, keep me in mind for a car pool, it's just a day's drive from Phx.

It is a great trip. The area gets very high use during the summer, scouts and all, but this is late enough in the season that most people don't like the chance of weather.

apologies for not removing self from the maybe list, once exiting from the foggy haze and returning to reality, my daydream regarding my "sugar daddy" or "sugar mama" sponsoring this sojourn to New Mexico was quickly forgotten. The problem lies with evilness represented by the $ symbol and not being able to take off work with pay. My real live mama paid for tickets to visit her in Arizona in April.
More people should sign up for this trip. It will be a fabulous time
