Sleeping bags last longer when you take your crampons off before getting in the bag - come to think of it...why were you wearing crampons in Georgia anyway ?? and the superglue spiked hair does a number on the hood.

Asolo boots do run a little small, but as with any boot, getting the correct size helps a lot, I know that you do not have a wide selection at the Salvation Army store but you really should buy boots on fit not just brand name.

I got as far as Smokey Mountain NP where I hitched a ride to knoxville. Like I said their were times I didn't move for days.

As far as my gear goes, I trusted some asswipe in bloomington to set me up with gear. He told me I was crazy for trying to do the AT without planning for it, and I guess he was right. But he didn't know #&%!$ about gear.”

“Virtually every bag I ever saw that died after a few months, had been kept in it's stuff sack for storage.

Every day your bag is in that stuff sack, kills it a little bit. Keep in it there for a few days after each trip and soon it will be trash. Store it in the stuff sack and it will last a couple months.”

I'd think that a bag used continuously for 6 months on the AT would be pretty thoroughly trashed anyway, but most people switch to a summer bag in the middle.”

A six-month trip is going to use a bag more than most are used in their lifetimes. I doubt if any of my bags have even 30 nights on them yet...”

“As a Canadian, I want to point out that I have no opinion on the personality clash thingy. I do, however, agree with DeorDX on Quallofill. It is by far the best synthetic fill; it is more packable and lighter for the given loft that any form of Polarguard. Cheap, too.”
