The Day The Music Died
Forty five years ago today Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson died in a plane crash after playing in Clear Lake, Iowa.

Buddy's music is some of my favorite stuff to play.

It sometimes makes me feel silly how sad I get when a favorite musician dies. You don’t really know the guy but you still morn. I remember the day SRV died it made me so sad.

The Day The Music Died
Buddy Holly was a rock 'n' roll innovator that, in some ways, hasn't been paralleled to date. forty five years! Yeah, I still love listening to him. I think his music holds up just great. Timeless stuff...

There's a virtual geocache in the field where the plane went down. Peruse some of the logs and photos here:

Holly shrine

And there's also a virtual cache at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake.

It's pretty cool to see the shots of the remembrances in the field, especially in the summer, with the corn around it. I checked a recent spot, looks pretty barren. Although it will be buried in snow following our recent storm.

I morned for days when Keith Moon died. That was a great loss for a great band. When Stevie died, I had a real heard time believing it. People get close to these people they never met, some of these musicians have touched people in ways they have no idea how.

SRV?
Who's that?

Both of those guys were ultimate credits to their instruments. Personally, Frank Zappa was a huge loss of talent for my tastes. I also was a big Jim Morrison fan, so when he went, that saddened me. Now, where's Bacpac to cut us new a-holes for saying all of this?

The passing of bacpac was a cold day in hell.

So Nigal, what were you like, 12 when Stevie Ray died?

I don't think I knew Stevie. I did mourn the loss of Ian Curtis & Sid Vicious.

I'll never forget the Eyewitness News cast of the death of Sid Viscious here in New York. Roger Grimsby got on and said, "Sid Viscious isn't viscious anymore, he's dead!" And then proceeded to give the story...

Stevie Ray Vaughn loved the music and style of Jimi Hendrix and was motivated by same.

You are right about that, Bear! You also had to have understood Roger Grimsby. This guy was a credible newsman with a diabolical sense of humor. he passed away several years ago...

"Build it and they will come."

I think it applies to that monument to Buddy Holly... and just like "Field of Dreams" it's in the ever-mystical cornfield. (heck, to ruin my theory, the farmers will probably plant soybeans next year!

I need to do those caches by Mason City and Clear Lake. I really like the photos of everything people have left at the site. And if someone wants to know EXACTLY where the plane went down, well, you're gonna get that on the geocaching website.

Rock And Roll Will Never Die!
My 17 year old and his buddies are working very seriously on rock and roll/blues guitar.

They are students of the rockabilly era and other stuff too.

Roy Orbison
Scotty Moore
George Harrison
Eddie Cochran
etc

Buddy died for our sins!

I absolutely love Buddy Holly's music. His talent was amazing. I wasn't around when he died, but his music lives on in my life, dat's for sure. I was hit pretty hard by John Denver's death. Probably the worst I've felt over a non-family member/personal friend's death was Galen Rowell. Of course Galen wasn't a singer, but his adventures and photography have inspired me more than any single man besides John Muir (when it comes to wilderness-related stuff, that is). Galen rocked.

Marshall Crenshaw did a wicked good "Buddy Holly" in the movie "La Bamba".

Lou Diamond Philips was fakin' it as Ritchie Valens and Brian Setzer was awesome as "Eddie Cochran".

Gary Busey did the fine work in "The Buddy Holly Story" as the man himself. Got him a best actor nod also...

I heard the strangest rumor once. Someone told me that John Denver was a Marine Corps sniper in Vietnam. He was serious when he told me, too.

I thought someone's dog died too.

Buddy Holly...one of the greatest singers. I always liked the 60's music....more meaning and soul to the lyrics. Not like today's pop hits. Wonder if anyone's going to remember today's hits in 40 years.
