Central CA “I was looking at the TTers by state and there are a bunch in CA. Anybody around the Los Osos area? I'll be in Los Osos for a week in June. I'd be interested in hooking up with some TTers even if it's just for lunch or a dayhike. Depending on my vacation time situation, I may stick around for an extra weekend to do some overnight hiking.” 12:07:50 PM 2/03/04 “I am, but I'm up in Stockton. You'll find more tt'rs posting to this. There are several in the LA area.” 4:05:07 PM 2/03/04 “Northern CA here...real North.” 4:27:53 PM 2/03/04 “Los Osos....is right next to Morro Bay...my in-laws use to live there. Near Lake Folsom.” 9:01:25 AM 2/10/04 “I'll be in California June 18. Probably spend a couple days in the San Francisco/San Jose area, then drive the coast highway down to Los Osos for my workshop June 21-25. I'll be done with my class Friday afternoon and won't fly out till Sunday evening. I'd like to do some hiking in the area. Any suggestions?” 9:17:32 AM 5/12/04 “Gonna be down south at all? We are usually in the Sierra almost every weekend in the summer.” 3:17:02 PM 5/12/04 “I would suggest the following: Big Basin State Park Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve Huddart Park Wunderlich Park Windy Hill Open Space Preserve Really, there are scads of parks to go hiking between SF and SJ. Most/all of these are documented pretty well somewhere on the internet - hunt around a bit and you'll find something good. You can't go wrong....” 4:02:01 PM 5/12/04 “I'm not positive, but June may be hot for high hikes. Pt. Reyes, north of SF has a nice coastal hike with a waterfall onto the beach. There are also good urban hikes right near the bridge on the SF side with beautiful water & bridge views. I have to see if I can find my CA hiking book for the exact names. I'm from WA.” 2:40:59 AM 5/13/04 “Thanks, and keep the ideas coming. Hot at high altitude is a good tip and one I wouldn't have thought of. Don't want to get myself into something I'll regret. How hot is hot? I like warm weather.” 8:55:01 AM 5/13/04 “Indian, a hiker from CA will have to chime in to inform you of how hot it gets inland. I found the Pt. Reyes trail. It's called Alamere Falls. It's 8.4 miles, and 4 hours. Elevation 500 ft. The trail starts at the Palomarin Trailhead. This is the southern part of Pt. Reyes, closest to SF. Another good one: Land's End Trail 2.5 miles/1 hr The route is mostly flat with a fantastic view of the bridge, bay and surrounding Islands. I only did a few trails in the area, because SF was not a destination, but a place I was passing on my way from LA to Northern CA. Further south by Osos - I haven't done these hikes, but my CA hiking book mentions, not spectacular but worth mentionting : "Los Osos Oaks Reserve" 2 miles/1hr. It is along a hwy with hwy noise. Flat trail. You will see alot of old twisted oaks there. It says it's good for a foggy day, because it's all about seeing the oak trees. Believe me, the coast does get real foggy at times. This sounds much better: "Montana de Oro Bluff Trail". 3miles/1.5hrs. Mostly flat, beautiful bluff views.” 4:24:20 PM 5/13/04 “Hmmm, the Sierra is the place to be in June” 5:21:10 PM 5/13/04 “Indiana, the hikes I mentioned are right where you will be staying. If you are willing to stop on your way down to Osos, there is so much to see, it's too much to mention. I have the Foghorn Outdoors California Hiking Book by Tom Stienstra & Ann Marie Brown. Check it out in the bookstore. Bring a pen & paper to mark down good trails. Go to p.479, Central CA. You will be passing Pt. Lobos State Park with great views along the coast and with easy hiking. If you want a day to remember forever, stop at the Elkhorn Slough and go kayaking. You'll pass tons of seals with babies, and otters. You don't have to kayak too far to see them. When you drive down the coast, make sure you are not driving inland when you approach Monterey. There is an area there called Pacific Grove that juts out on the water, and the hwy continues around there if you want to stay on the coast. Pacific Grove is beautiful.” 6:06:05 PM 5/13/04 “Hot for high altitude? High altitude in the Sierra (8000'+) is where you go to escape the hot temperatures of the valleys and the foothills (Sea Level - 3000'). In June, it's a crap shoot as to whether CA will be hot or cool. If it's hot stay near the coast. Two suggestions would be Big Sur or Big Basin.” 2:42:38 PM 5/14/04 “Savage, I did the Ewoldson trail in Big Sur. There were no views to the top, and I wondered what I was doing there until I reached the top. There was a great water & mountain view. The bugs bugged me, not big bugs, but pesky little ones. There was an area on the top that had a lot of little rocks, so hikers made tons of cairns. If Indiana, is driving straight down to Osos without doing an overnighter, that means he will have to leave all his belongings in his car while he is hiking. I guess it depends where you hike if it's okay to do that.” 4:32:32 PM 5/14/04 “Savage, I did the Ewoldson trail in Big Sur. Lots of good hiking over here :)” 7:40:40 PM 5/14/04 “Anyone want to meet up for a dayhike? ...........or a beer some night?” 12:36:01 AM 5/15/04 Sacramento Area “I'm heading to the back country in Yosemite on June 21st. I'll have to check the calendar, but I may be available one of the weekends you are in the area. You can email me direct at flyfishgal@prodigy.net.” 1:42:01 AM 5/15/04
