It's all about the Sierra. But of course, the Rockies are a close second. The cascades aren't so bad either. The Canadian Rockies, ohmygosh! But for now, it's the Sierra for me.

I am a fan of the Black Mountains in North Carolina, Smokies, particularly Mt. LeConte and the Whites in NH. I have not been out west yet. Hoping to climb Borah Peak this summer.

top 5 favorate mountains:

1. Mt. LeConte, TN
2. Mt. Mitchell, NC
3. Mt. Washington, NH
4. Baxter Peak, ME
5. Roan Mt, TN

alot of people say Mt. Sterling in the smokies is awesome too. When I go out west to do some backpacking I presume many of the my favorate mountains in the east will be replaced by western peaks. The Apps have so much history that the Western Mountains don't have though.

nashvillehiker, I don't mean to be picky - but if you are talking mountains, the mountain you are referring to in Maine is Katahdin. Baxter Peak is one of 10 peaks on that mountain.

do you have a cousin by the name of Ice Tea?

The Smokys are great and I found a nice trail in the Ouachita Mountains last week, but the Rockies of Colorado remain my favorite destination.

Nashvillehiker and the Smokies
If you come to the Smokies this weekend and hike Mt. LeConte... I may run into you. I got my crampons today and I'm ready to go.
Slowalk and I hiked yesterday and agreed you must come with us sometime?! It might be fun! Keep your eyes peeled for the Pink Snow Bunny.

yea and the harney peak firetower is a great place to spend the nite, especially in a storm! (not)

i just did max patch to hot springs in nc this past weekend, bluff mt had 3 inches of snow while hot springs had none. woohoo! the hike up to le conte via the alum cave trail is mucho fun, even if they made it a little too touron-friendly in places. springer is an awesome place to camp, plenty of flat spots to tent and a really nice shelter. blood mt 30 miles to the north is a fun climb and descent, the rhododendrons are gorgeous, and the view is nice on a clear day. i cant wait to be gushing about katahdin and the knife edge.

All of my favorites have personal significance.
Mt. Harvard. It's the first fourteener I summitted.
Granite Mountain, AZ. It's the first place I hiked in Arizona. I can see it almost anywhere I drive around home, and just seeing it I visualize the trail and what it's like at the top.
San Francisco Peaks. they are 70 (or so) miles from my home, but I can see them on my way home from work. Haven't been to the top yet. Maybe this summer.
Mt. Lamborn, CO. You can see it from my in-law's yard. And it's also lizs' special mountain.

Mt. LeConte/Smokies
Dana, I'll be up the Bull's Head trail Saturday and back down either via Bull's Head or Rainbow falls. May have Opie with me. Once on top I'd like to meanda around the BLVD. I got some crampons today too. Finally. Must admit they were cheapos though. Only $10 at Cumberland Transit.

Well honey....
me n you and a couple pair of cheapo crampons.... and OPie! What more could we want? I plan on heading straight on up Alum Cave Trail so I can use them rascals much as I can! Then if I can get a shuttle I will go down via Bullhead. Rainbow Falls trail gets too sloppy for me this time of year. I will go on Saturday. I was supposed to go soak in the Hot Springs tomorrow but I am running a fever and feeling chitty. Dr. tomorrow for me instead. Its supposed to snow some on Saturday! :-)

Jackson Hole is like an outdoor cathedral to me, I find that when I'm away for more than a couple of months I have an overwhelming driving urge to be there, I haven't been in almost 30 months, sometimes I just sit and stare at my pictures all day.

Bison - here is a good BP in the Smokies for you
Bison, try the alum cave trail, to the Boulevard trail, then onto the AT, stay over night at the Icewater springs shelter (get a reservation well in advance), next day BP out to Charlies Bunion on the AT, then either go back on the AT towards Newfound Gap, or take the Dry Sluice past Kephart shelter, and finally the Kephart prong trail to the NewFound Gap road. I would say that would be a very sweet Backpack initiation in the Smokies.

Bison
It can snow in any month in the higher elevations of the Smokies from what I have heard. I think conditions are good for a hike like that from April to October. Alum Cave and the Boulevard are probably my two favorate trails in the Smokies. Icewater Springs shelter is really nice, but very popular. Charlies Bunion will afford you some of the best views in the Smokies and on the AT for that matter.

Don't go to the Smokies in July. Its choked with tourests. October is bad too because of people going to see the fall colors. The back country is amazing with the fall colors though.

In my experience in the Smokes, once you get more than a half mile or so off the trailhead the tourist count declines verrrrry quickly.
