Last night i gave my speech in class.

I got a 95

The teacher said it was the best in the class and I got the highest grade. YEAH!!
I knew my big mouth would come in handy some day!

He took points away becasue I looked at my notes moer then I looked at everyone, lack of eye contact
also he said my defination of ART was to broad. He was right but that is a hard word to define. I mean, ART is in the eye of the beholder thing. IMHO

So thank you everyone and HPM, hugs for your big help :)

HPM, how would you define art then?

I used the Cambridge Dictionary and it said

"the making or doing of something whose purpose is to bring pleasure to people..."

I see what the prof means, under that definition making cookies for a friend would be art.

Congrats on the presentation.

How would I define Art?

Very tough question. So much so that I think your professor is dead wrong to dock you for your view of what art is and not having a narrow viewpoint. Honestly now, if Tolstoy, Worhol, Plato, Van Gogh, Jung, Nieschie and countless other artists, philosophers and deep thinkers can't agree then what can he expect from lil' ol' you and me?

Anywhoo.
Personally, art needs to move me on a basic level. It needs to evoke a reaction in me.

I look for technical ability. A poorly constructed work will turn me off very quickly. How do I define poorly constructed? Well, that would require me to teach you how to paint and I can't do that online.

I like it when art causes me to ask questions but that is not a requirement. For example, I can sit in front of a Mark Rothko color field or a Van Gogh landscape all day and just soak it in.

I do not like art that is so far removed from reality that it can not be enjoyed/appreciated by itself and requires the viewer to read a manifesto in order to "get" the piece.

Clear as mud?

Very interesting case study here, NS. This is a perfect example of where the work in question is actually welcome in its setting, yet violates some existing statute. IMO, yes,, it is art. But, as Maple had so eloquently put to her class, art cannot transcend the law. Personally, I would hope that they get to keep it and the acquisition of the required permits take care of the problem. There is no doubt that it has aesthetic value. The law is a bit over-the-top, IMO. But, it's still the law. So, I wish them luck and hopefully the Melbourne City Council isn't too stubborn in this one...

That's cool. I mean, it's not like someone vandalized the property. In a case like that, the proper permits should be able to nip that problem right there...

We had a similar case here in Jacksonville where and art supply store painted a huge mural on their building and the other neighboring businesses complained about them violating the sign ordinances.

The difference in these two cases is that the art supply store also painted a very large version of their logo into the mural.

The compromise was that the store could keep the mural if they made their logo small enough to comply with sign ordinance size requirements.

Art is public spaces or in clear public view will always be a point of contention because its presence fundamentally changes the space it occupies and affects everyone who views it. Some folks will dig it and others will hate it. And both will be vocal about it.

I voted for "Art," too. Althought my daughter paints a lot of stuff like that (Recent sales of $400, 395 and 385), I do not consider it either art or an ad. It's just a paint job on the outside of the building. Who says it has to be one color, etc. However, I see a kicker and that is the name of the museum at the end of the mural. But is it a business? If not, can a non-business actually have an ad? This could end up being an interesting court battle.

Cloudy and 35ºF. right now in Central Park.

OK, I haven't read this whole thread (don't you hate people who post and don't bother to read everything preceding?? lol)

Interesting question. I don't know that I can answer whether or not it's art. But here's the point I'd like to make.

I can't say I'm in favor of graffiti... BUT... look at the fun we have looking at the stuff left behind by the Anasazi (excuse me, Ancestral Puebloans) and similar cultures. One can sure while away some time pondering on what those symbols might have meant.

So that's why I wonder about a huge crack down on graffiti today. No, you don't want graffiti on private property. You don't want it on public property or in the woods.

But sometimes I wonder if some culture on down the road -- perhaps without all the literature and things we left behind (and for damn sure don't ask me the situation that would cause the disappearance of all that!) -- where would they look for OUR ancient symbols to try to analyze our culture?

(Then again, maybe they could just try a landfill... lol)

Good topic to ponder......

There was a mural painted on the side of a business in historic-oriented downtown Decorah, Iowa a few years back. It was done by the artist who sells StoryPeople books and works.

It was kind of crazy looking... and some people thought it showed a guy with balls hanging down (mind you, this is kind of stick people type work). They had to paint over it.

On another front, in an area town -- Lanesboro, MN -- there is a private theatre company. The MN legislature two to three years ago provided up to $1 million in bonds to allow the theatre and regional art gallery to build a new art center. BUT funds had to come through the city as the funding entity, as well as taking care of any matching funds required.

After much hubbub and many attempts to make this work, the theatre and gallery at the end of January voted to turn down the state dollars and forge ahead themselves through private fund-raising efforts. They were quite worried about the city having a say in what plays could or could not be presented (and rightly so, from what I heard. The issue had come up before)

Interesting........

Graffiti artists charged for repainting Towne Lake facilities

Art is in the eye of the beholder.

But in this case, the McKinney Police Department saw it only as criminal mischief.

Joseph Grant Rushmore, 20, of Allen and Ruth Christine Prikryl, 18, of Van Alstyne were arrested after a McKinney police officer caught them giving the girls' bathroom in the Towne Lake concession stands an extreme makeover by spray-painting almost every inch of the walls, doors and stalls late Tuesday night, McKinney Police Capt. Randy Roland said.

The suspects were discovered by Cpl. Randy Agan, who was checking on the concession stand around midnight Tuesday as part of his regular patrol route, when he heard noises coming from the girls' bathroom. He discovered Rushmore and Prikryl spray-painting the walls and covering the bathroom with hearts, stars, patterns and phrases like "Be happy," "Have a wonderful day" and "All you need is love," Roland said.

Rushmore and Prikryl even left a note saying they only had good intentions in mind when they took it upon themselves to redecorate the girls' bathroom.

"This is not meant as destruction, but something of art to just make people smile because color is pretty," the note read.

They also signed their artistic creations with a black marker in different places on the bathroom wall, according to pictures provided by the McKinney Police Department.

Rushmore and Prikryl were booked at the Collin County Detension Center on a Class A misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief. Their bonds were set at $750 each and they both bonded out early Wednesday morning, Lt. John Norton of the Collin County Sheriff's Office said.

Roland said he has never seen vandalism like this before.

"With the amount of graffiti we saw, that's unique," Roland said.

City of McKinney Parks Superintendent Tim White said they occassionally have problems with vandalisms around the concession stands at Towne Lake. But White said he's never seen anything like this in his 16 years with the city.

"I would say it happens once every couple of months," White said. "Thank goodness it doesn't happen that often. It's usually just 'Bobby loves Suzy' or something along those lines. It hasn't been this substantial of an amount.

"It's probably the most substantial amount of graffiti I've ever seen," White said.

White said it would cost between $400 and 500 to clean up. Luckily, they were scheduled to repaint the bathrooms Tuesday, so he said the graffiti will be gone by Wednesday.

I'd have to see some pictures. A good graffiti artist is giving away art that is worth something. Some people call their stuff graffiti when it's not worth the paint used to make it. I hate that they consider anybody with a can of paint a graffiti artist.

MONTPELIER – A Montpelier High School senior prank turned out to be as beautiful as it is clever, leaving school administrators uncertain how to react to an uncommissioned large celestial ceiling mural.

The mural, a painting of swirling clouds, stars and a sun in the sky, was apparently done Tuesday morning from midnight to 4 a.m. in the main lobby, Principal Peter Evans said. School administration is unsure how students entered the building, because there appears there was no forced entry.

Evans said when he returned to school on Tuesday after the holiday weekend, he looked up at the mural on the lobby ceiling and thought it was an art class project. He soon learned that it was the Montpelier High School class of 2005's senior prank, a tradition that has a more troublesome impact on the school. About 170 ceiling tiles were painted, he said.

"In this position we try to figure out how to deal with a case of vandalism that's really quite beautiful," Evans said.

In previous years, the departing class took books off of library shelves, piled snow in front of entrances, and even brought a portable toilet into the school, Evans said. This year's prank is reflective of the graduating class, Evans said, because they are creative and often challenge school administration to think about what is right and wrong.

The school will not discipline or press charges against the students for entering or vandalizing school property, the principal said. And, he added, no one is planning on removing the mural.

"It's beautiful, I think everyone agrees that it's beautiful. We're enjoying it right now, and we don't plan on removing it or eliminating it," Evans said.
