San Bernardino Mountains
I took a nice hike on the South Fork trail today. Snow all of the way. The weather was beautiful, but it got cold as the sun started to drop. The ice on the trail is covered with snow, but starting to melt again, so unless more snow comes it's going to get really icy out there. I put my snowshoes on after Horsie Meadows to get the weight off my back (didn't need them), but the heavy wet snow balled up on the crampons. I put them back on in the Dry Lake Drainage when I ended up butt deep in snow. There were ski tracks and a few people were ahead of me on the trail. It was slow moving - took me from 10 am until 2:30 to get to Dry Lake and then from 2:45 to just after 5 pm to get back down to the trailhead.

Dang, wingding. I love that trail and hope that Dry Lake ends up with lots of water after the snow melts. I'll have to try snowshoes sometime.

Some reports on the SGWA discussion board told of skiing down from there, but last week. Awesome, thanks.

Phil - that is my favorite winter hike in the San Gorgonio Wilderness. I think it's the wonderful view of the mountains at Dry Lake, but that 12 mile roundtrip can be tough in the snow.

Great pictures Wingding. Beautiful hike. The picture of the Dry Lake /Dollar Lake Junction reminded me of your quote over on HSTopix.

Just marvelous. That shot with the sunlight brough out an "ooooh!".

It's one thing to see that kind of light, but it's quite another to feel it upon you. It's like a shower of a different kind.

I'm told these showers of sunlight add years to your life.

Hey wingding, nice pics. Looks like a nice day hike. Did you say that you went 12 miles?

Thanks for the photo-essay.

You're probably well aware of the 8 deaths that have occured in the L.A.-area mountains due to the snow melting, then ice forming on the trails. Take care!

You've been posting about all these fabulous upcoming Sierra trips that you've been organizing. I'll confess that I was wondering where you do all your local (SoCal) hiking during the winter/spring months. You must do a lot of preparatory hiking down south so that you can enjoy the Sierra jaunts.
