Hey Deanoman...

We were going to do a long trip in Jasper but we hit Mt. Robson Provincial Park instead....what a beautiful spot! We did 6 days and 5 nights and still wish we had more time.... I beleive you can hike into Jasper from Robson...

If that doesn't float your boat then I know that the northern boundary b/w Jasper and Willmore Wilderness has some great opportunities for some good 7 day trips...

Check out Snow Nymph's report on either her site or from Phil's page. The Snow couple went up there after we were in Yoho.

We hiked there last year - yes Jasper is beautiful. We did a few days in the Tonquin Valley - utterly gorgeous. The Skyline Trail was booked unfortunately, so if you do that one, make your reservations a long way ahead. I agree about Mt. Robson - that was also a really good hike. Get the book, "Don't Waste your Time in the Canadian Rockies" -- lots of good hikes in there, both backpacking and dayhikes.

"Don't Waste your Time in the Canadian Rockies"

We spent three weeks there and purchased the same book...

Good choice.

Denoman - A lot of the trails in Jasper are more suitable for horse travel. The place is bloody huge.

But, the ones mentioned here are the highlights. The Tonquin is a fairly easy access to a specactular area. It can be buggy in there before September.

Mt Robson, on the BC side is one of my favourites for sure.

Feel free to email me for details. There some photos on my web site as well

Hodgeman...one of these days I gotta meet up with you for one of your trips...

I always enjoy looking at your website...

I would love to go back to Mt. Robson one day and walk over into Jasper...

The Hargreaves shelter is pretty cool, isn't it?

Sounds like a good idea to me, Adventurist. I always enjoy showing off the backyard.

Speaking of your backyard...

What was the final damage as a result from the fires last year?

How close did that come to you?

Not too bad down here in the Fraser River valley, but I didn't have to drive far to see some major damage. The Okanagan region got hit pretty bad, about 4 or 5 hours drive from here. Worst fire season in 60 years.

Most certainly Jasper. I don't recall seeing that much snow on the mountains in Banff during either of my trips in 98 and 01. I do remember the snow on the mountains when I was in Jasper August 01.

The one marked Jasper Park is beautiful, and the one marked Grand Teton is....beyond words!

The one marked Emerald Lake says B.C., but is it really Alberta? Have you gone to Kootenay Park? If so, do you recommend Kooteny over Yoko or visa versa? I don't want ask you too many questions until I'm ready to plan a trip to Jasper/Banff and maybe Kootaney and/or Yoho.

Do you recommend a particular time of the year? If their rainy season is the same time as in WA, then I may miss out on the spring flowers, and it may be a little cold for me in the spring too.

You know our mountain flowers are out on the mountains in July after the thaw.

I went to Jasper, Banff, Kootenay, & Yoho back in August '86. I could be wrong about Emerald Lake, I just going by what I wrote on the back of the photo 18 years ago.

I go to NY to visit family every year, but I don't consider that a vacation. On my next vacation, I would like to visit all the parks you went to. I wish my family would visit me in WA, so I could put more $ towards a real vacation.

One thing about going to NY is that it's an eating fest with NY pizza, fresh milky mozzarella that they take right out of the water and wrap it for you, Italian pastries, Nathan's fries, Kosher Delis for sky high pastrami sandwiches, matzo ball soup, knishes, they don't even know what a knish is in WA. This one restaurant that makes roast beef sandwiches with the beef dipped in au jus (natural juice), then put on a roll, then they dip the whole roll in the au jus, plus panelle special sandwiches(Sicilian food).

I can't get any of this stuff in WA, and whatever they have that's close does not compare.

Lipstick - Emerald Lake is in Yoho NP, which is just on the BC side of the provincial border. In the early days, Lake Louise Alberta was originally named Emerald Lake also, until somebody realized there was two and renamed it after the queen's daughter.

There are some areas of our Rocky Mountain Parks which can be accessed snow-free in July or even earlier, but my favourite time to go would be August and September. It can snow on any day of the year.

I haven't been into Kootenay Park in a few years. The Rockwall trail is spectacular, but a major fire in 2003 wiped out the foot bridge and rendered much of the south end of the trail unsafe (read closed).

If you had to chose one of the two, I would recommend Yoho. You'll find lots of photos on my web site. Feel free to email me if you'd like any specific info

Thanks Hodgeman. I'm not going to get into any particulars until I know I'm definitely going. I hate to waste people's time on giving me info on a trip that "might" happen, though I will take your suggest of Yoho over Kootenay. I heard there was a Lake O'Hara in Yoho that is spectacular.

You won't be alone :-((

There is a lodge operation with bus shuttle, and front-country camping on the lake. Reservations well in advance are needed. There are lots of spectacular high routes for day hiking

Hodgeman, I said I wouldn't ask specific questions at this time, but on what trail was that picture taken, if you recall, WOW!!!!! Thanks for the heads up on early reservations. I have a chihuahua that I have to take, so I may end up in hotels.

USA, yes, go to Lake O'Hara and take pics. I'd love to see them :)

Not my photo, but the view is southwest with Mt Odaray on the right, so it would have been taken from somewhere on Mt Huber, probably the alpine route to Wiwaxy Gap. There's more than a dozen small lakes and at least as many trails and routes in the core area. There's a few different routes that will get you up a couple of thousand feet above the lakes for the day

You can make reservations three months in advance and if I'm not mistaken, Chihuahuas are allowed, but not on the bus.

Lake O'Hara info

Sorry USA - I guess we got a bit off the Jasper topic

I took a bus for the first time this summer since I got my chihuahua 2 years ago, and asked the driver if they allowed dogs on the (public) bus. I was surprised he said yes, and you need to pay a fare for the dog, unless you can put the dog on your lap, then maybe the driver would not charge you.

You can bring a dog into a Nat'l Park, but you can't have them on the trails.

Lipstick - Most of our parks don't allow dogs in the backcountry overnight, if at all. Jasper would be one exception, since it's open to horses, but some areas would likely still be restricted.
