The Florida Trail

“Now that I'm down here, I'm checking out the Florida Trail. Anyone hiked any of it? Know of any good books and maps for it? What about water sources on the trail?

I'm especially interested in the Southern portion from the southern terminus to the north side of Okeechobee.”

“I know, I know. I had just moved and couldn't join you guys - plus I'm buried in work (it's tax season for me) I'll resurface on April 16th.”

“A have been on much of the trail around central florida, but not south florida. Sandra Friend has written three good books about hiking in south, central and north florida - this includes much about the FNST.

You can also check out the Florida Trial website which has a good store with some good books.”

“Roam Around - the Florida Trail is pretty cool! It's flat, but it passes through a variety of ecosystems (pine forests, swamps, cypress hammocks, live oak islands, prairies, etc.), which is really neat. If you do Ocala, there's even a sizeable bear population there. We all saw lots of poop and some tracks this past weekend.”

“I've hiked the vast majority of the "bend" of the FT. Mostly Osceola NF to Ocala NF. Lots of good hiking.”

“I am taking a week off next year for the Ocala trip, going down to Ft Lauderdale and taking in the southern most section of the FT early in the week then going north to Ocala for the group hike.”

When you come down your welcome to come in to the Fort Myers/ Naples area I can see that you get to the trail head and back. I\'m sure I\'ll be heading north for the Ocala trip afterwards. Maybe I\'ll hit the southern section as well.

“Thanks. I appreciate that. Sometime this fall, I will start planning this one. I am thinking I could leave Memphis on a Friday, spend Sat, Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed on the lower sections, resupply and move on up state for the Fr, Sa, Sun portion and get back to Memphis the next Monday.”
