last night I watched what had to be the coolest show i have ever seen. It was from Nova/PBS

Descent into the ice

In my next life i want to do this.
There is one guy that works up on Mt. Blanc

Mt. Blanc

he scuba
dives into the ice caves that have not fully frozen over looking for Lakes

he takes his dog Boobie with him everyday to measure the ice. he works for a compnay that uses the water that runs off the mountain as energy.

very interesting show.

His dog's name is "Boobie"?

The vet's office must have fun with that one.

Maple you better do it in this life. There won’t be any glaciers in your next life.

Sure there will be, but you will have to wait for the next ice age. Of course by that time there probably won't be any humans left on the planet to reincarnate into.

I think thats what the dogs name was. they have to climb something like 700 steps everyday to get to where he works. there are many tunnels within the mountain.

Wow Maple. thats great!
I will have to see if I can catch a re-run of that. I am always a Science nut. I am fascinated by the areas like the Smokies and some pockets of land scattered through primarily the south. These areas were not covered by the glaciers. I found out after I moved to TN that an area right near me in Va. was a spot which didn't get covered during the last Ice Age! It is now a protected area called a "calciferous fen". The limestone springs there provide high calcium concentrations for unique species of plants. I have been back to see it since I found that out. Its pretty cool.

Here's a good article on the melting glaciers in Glacier Nat. Park...

Like the melting snows of Kilimanjaro, the shrinking glaciers of Glacier National Park have been stamped on the public consciousness as ominous symbols of global warming.

When explorers first climbed into our high alpine valleys more than a century ago, they discovered 150 glaciers. Today, there are only 26. The ones that remain are rapidly disintegrating—so quickly that this corner of Montana, which has had glaciers since the Stone Age, is expected to have none by 2030.

oh wow, how cool!! Missed it! Got to see when it runs again. I saw one the other day; a documentary about climbing everest. That's the second one I saw. I love to watch that stuff.

heehee, that reminds me. A couple of month ago I received a real application of a climber that wanted to climb denali. I have no idea why he send this to me, or how he got my email address. I almost fell of my chair when I read it. This is a dream of mine, but I am nowhere close to even think about it yet.

Where It Goes.........................Nobody Knows
Noone knows the mechanism for pole reversal...only that we know it has happened periodically in Earth's history, and that it will happen again.

And noone knows for certain what effects a reversal would have on us and our technology when it does happen.

The Big Pole Reversal
By the "poles flipping' I think you're referring to the magnetic poles. That's happened numerous times over millions of years and can be tracked by drilling in spreading centers (volcanics) on the ocean floors. As the magma comes to the surface (under water) it has a magnetic orientation that is preserved as it crystalizes. When they drill down through the layers of rock they can see the orientation, in the core samples, suddenly shift. It will happen again, but I'm not sure if anyone realizes the effects of a magnetic pole reveresal. It's really gonna screw up your compass, cell phone and electrical appliances! We might not be able to log on to trail talk for a few days either!
