Sipsey Bushwhack...
Hiya, Stovie. I have been experimenting with a few soda can stove designs of late, and I think I have come up with a good one. So, O Master of Stovation, I hereby challenge you to a Stoveoff at Sipsey. One pint of water at 20 paces (or one ounce +/- of alcohol). First one to a full rolling boil wins. Whaddaya say, Bubba???

I go for quality, not speed.... ;-)

The fastest stoves are the 'cat can' types, but they go thru a lot of alcohol quickly.
With my stoves, I try to balance time to boil with efficiency. I can usually get a good pint boiling in about 6-8 minutes with 0.7-0.8 fl oz alcohol.

The stoves are so light the big factor in weight is the amount of fuel you much carry for x number of meals.

I would say that the stove-off should be which stove boils a cup of water using the least ammount of fuel. My one can stove with integrated put holder can boil a cup of water using less then 1/2oz of fuel... and when the water boils I can shut it off and conserve the leftover fuel to boot.

Well if you are competing for beer, then I change my mind.

The most efficient design is Sgt Rock's ION, but it is pretty slow to boil.
The cook pot also has a huge effect on boil times. Different pots will have different times to boil.
A straight up contest would require same pot, same temp water, same quanity water, same pot holder, ect.

Don't get me wrong, I've got some real hotrods I've made, but don't really use them camping.
I like the simple, easy, just pour alcohol in, light, and boil types.

My fav right now is a modified Sgt Rock ION made from little grape juice cans . I added double the jet holes to speed it up a bit.
The thing I love about it is it will only hold a max of 1 fl oz of fuel so I never waste extra fuel. The full size 'pepsi' burners can be way overfilled.

Pepsi can (or other homemade variety) stove, MSR Titan Kettle, 1 pint water, same amount of methanol...

FG, you are a cooked Goose.
Your little amateurish burner can't hang with THE BIG DAWG'S. ;-)

Might be fun to have more than just us in this contest.

I'll need someone like HOI to really make it a contest. ;-)

MSR Titan Kettle sucks. ;-)
I gave mine away after timing it with my Evernew 0.9 L Ti pot.
The Evernew pot was at least 30-45 seconds faster that the MSR.

The bottom surface area is key.

This is actually Sipey III.

Year 1 (me, MDS, and sandy) It was a rainy weekend and lots of folks bailed.

Year II (Arky, Cocoa Williams, MDS, Cocoa's brother, me, and some local friends) chili had to bail because of some woman, Dunadan bailed due to distance, and arclite's mom was in ill health. This trip was really called Footballapalooza II. We did bushwhack West Bee and I felll of the top of a 15' boulder. A good time was had by all.

chili, since you're an attorny, I'll defer to you to judge the event. I'll hold the beer.

Technical? Anyone with a watch that can tell when something bubbles will do, that's why it needs to be a lawyer. I need to scientifically determine the ideal temperature of beer in the woods.

I'm thinking use whatever pot, stand, windscreen you want, but must be real backpacking stuff.

Same amount and temp water.

Time starts when the match is lit.
Boil is when the water hits 211 degrees with a digital temp.

The bubbles start way before a real boil.

So, you're hedging your bets so that FG won't put salt in the water to change the boil temp. Can't get much past you.

Only difference is folks need to wait until camp to pop the top. The hike in comes close to a drop off a time or two. Combine that with a lack of a real trail and it'd be best to be sober on the way in.

A Newbee wants in!
I was just introduced to the pepsi can stove on the Ocala 3 trip but I am feeling a bit froggy and want in to this compition. I will not be able to be there but would am wondering if Jerbear would represent me in Proxy? Ill send my entry down via UPS or something. What ya think Jer?

Have we come up with a clearification on the rules? I a reading that it will be fastest boil with least amount of fuel using a normal packing pan and any windscreen?

It this for bragging rights or for Libations around the fire. I like Crazy Mikes style. Scotch is good....

Stovestomper Look out.... I have a mean machine....

How about a rule that stove can not weigh over one OZ. Some of the Druggies in the bunch surely have a set of pocket scales LOL ...
